Dr. Hell and Dr. Kabuto are two archaeologists who found the remains of an ancient civilization capable of making giant robots. When Dr. Juzo Kabuto found out Dr. Hell's plans of creating the robots to conquer the Earth, he became his enemy and started the construction of Mazinger Z, a fantastic giant robot, as a defense weapon. The story starts when Dr. Hell sends his first assistant, Baron Ashura, to kill Dr. Kabuto. The attempt is successful, but not completely: Just before his death, he is found by his grandson, Kouji Kabuto, and informs him about the recently finished robot hidden on the underground basement. From this moment on, and with the help of Dr. Gennosuke Yumi -Dr. Kabuto's ex-assistant- the inexpert Kouji manages to learn how to pilot powerful Mazinger. Dr. Yumi also made a robot of his own, called Aphrodite A, and piloted by his daughter Sayaka, which was primarily conceived as a peace-time robot. Both Mazinger and Aphrodite together combat and destroy every mechanical monster created by Dr. Hell and his associates, Baron Ashura and the Iron Mask. In a second season of the series, a new character appears: Dr. Kabuto Jr., father of Kouji, who wasn't dead, but constructing an even more powerful robot: Great Mazinger...
Teenager Koji Kabuto pilots the amazing super-robot Mazinger Z to avenge its inventor (his grandfather) against the Mycene Empire, led by the evil mad scientist Doctor Hell.
Mazinger Z is the best mecha (big robot) serie. Based on Go Nagai´s famous manga maybe thirty years have been too much for stories and animation, but the concept is intouchable (you can see &quot;Mazinkaiser&quot; if you can watch the S. XXI version of Mazinger, Great Mazinger, Koji, Sayaka, Baron Ashura (Baron Ashler in Spain), Doctor Hell and all the classic robot monsters (Grengus C-3, Baras k-9, Genocider f-9...), but if you want have a remembrance of a glorious past, you have to forgive and forget some details like women role in the serie (Aphrodite-A and Sayaka actions are always futile) and old animation system. On the other hand, you will have lots of<br/><br/>fun, amazing adventures and epic drama... ah! and Boss Borot.
This is one of the best giant robot anime (cartoon) of all time. The animation is somewhat dated, but the originality of the characters (specially baron Ashura and viscount pigman) remain quite striking and not easily forgotten. The mechanical beasts are also amazing, not two being alike. As with many other anime, mazinger z (known as tranzor z in the US )suffered from censorship all over the world and is hard to know if the version released in the US is uncut.
