我不知道是誰最先開始把 reflection 譯造「反射」，但我一直認為是錯譯， reflection 應是取自「反省」之意。

觀看英文維基百科的記載， Introspection_(computer_science) 條目沒有記載詞源，缺乏引用來源，但有 83 次編輯。 Reflection_(computer_programming) 條目雖有引用來源，有 593 次編輯，但沒有記載為何叫 reflection 。

我 Google 之後，我發覺英語人一樣有相同問題， overflow 上有較清晰的解答，有趣的是有人參考了法文維基百科：

即是， reflection 包括 introspection 和 intercession。 introspection 即是程式能夠檢測自己。 intercession 即是程式能夠修改自己。

我作為一個 CD-ROM 長期看討論 ECMAScript 的 official mailing-list ，人們確實把 typeof 作為 reflection 的一部份，他們亦通常使用 reflection 一字，有時亦使用 introspect 或 introspection 。

人類確實是一種獨特的生物，能夠單純透過思考而獲得知識和改變行為。
