  4. "I'm just a cat, you know. A street cat. And cats, they don't know nya-thing."
  5. - Sylvia "Urban Cat" Mao
  6. ================================================================================
  7.
  8. The Random Scene rule is a tool to help generate ideas for info gather scenes during the Research Phase. By using certain style skills or outfits, a character can also apply mechanical effects to the scene.
  9.
  10.
  11. Random Scene Rules
  12. ========================================
  13. ---------- Eligible Scenes
  14. During the Research Phase, players may want to have a scene in order to investigate something, or speak with other characters. In such a case, even if the player has a clear goal, they may not have as clear an idea for a place to go, or how to roleplay obtaining their goal. The Director may decide to use this rule, in such a case.
  15.
  16. >>>>> Ineligible Scenes
  17. Generally, the types of scenes listed below may not have the Random Scene rule applied to them. This is because these scenes are ones that are set pieces, the location and situation of which are set by the story. Should the Director permit it, however, then there's no other reason they can't be used.
  18. * Opening Phase Scenes
  19. * Climax Phase Scenes
  20. * Ending Phase Scenes
  21. * Event Scenes (I.E., pre-made story events)
  22.
  23.
  24. ---------- Steps for Using the Rule
  25. For details regarding scene description or appearance checks, please consult the core book. The Random Scene rules affect the scene rules only from deciding the scene player to making the appearance check; other steps are unaffected.
  26.
  27. Step 1: Decide Scene Player
  28. Step 2: Play Scene Tarot
  29. Step 3: Describe the Scene
  30. Step 4: Apply RSC Effect
  31. Step 5: Other Cast Appearance Checks
  32.
  33. >>>>> Decide Scene Player
  34. A player may want to play out a scene so they can investigate or talk. With the Director's permission, that player is made the scene player. This is basically unchanged from normal.
  35.
  36. >>>>> Play Scene Tarot
  37. The Director draws a tarot card from the deck and plays that as the scene tarot.
  38.
  39. >>>>> Describe the Scene
  40. Refer to the following charts according to the tarot card drawn, then describe the scene location and situation based on the blurb provided. There are two Random Scene Charts; pick the one that would be appropriate for the scene.
  41.
  42. If the scene player doesn't feel the scene tarot is appropriate to what they wanted to do, the Director may draw one more tarot card and use that one for the scene tarot instead. Should that one not suit the scene player either, then it's best to give up on the Random Scene rule and proceed to a scene as normal.
  43.
  44. >>>>> Apply RSC Effect
  45. If the scene player has an appropriate style skill or outfit, they may choose one(1) and declare its use. If the check for the skill is successful, or the outfit activates, then the Effect appropriate to the entry on the Random Scene Chart (the RSC Effect) applies to all Cast who appear in the scene. If the scene tarot description doesn't suit the scene player (as mentioned above), then naturally its effect won't apply, either.
  46.
  47. >>>>> Other Cast Appearance Checks
  48. After settling the RSC Effect, other characters may make their appearance check. This is unchanged from normal.
  49.
  50.
  51. ---------- RSC Effects
  52. The "Effect" field of the Random Scene Chart is called the RSC Effect. If the RSC Effect is a check modifier, then every character appearing in the scene to which the RSC Effect is applied may benefit from that effect. If a number is indicated, like "one" of something, then a choice must be made as to who the effect applies to. Generally, that falls to the scene player.
  53.
  54. If for some reason the scene tarot would change during the scene, such as Kabuki's "BGM Change" or other effect, then the RSC Effect is canceled. Even if a new scene tarot is played, no new RSC Effect takes its place.
  55.
  56. >>>>> Subcharts
  57. Depending on the Random Scene Chart result, it may reference other charts. Two in particular: Random Food Chart, and Random Guest Chart. These charts may not have their results picked from. The Director may override this by themselves choosing from the given chart, if they decide it meets the needs of their story better.
  58.
  59. >>>>> Guest
  60. RSC Effects can at times have Guests appear. These Guests generally won't use Miracles, and do not fight. How the Guest may interact with players is up to the GM.
  61.
  62. >>>>> Wounds
  63. When an RSC Effect heals wounds, they may never heal Dead, Catatonic, or Erasure.
  64.
  65. >>>>> Tips
  66. When an RSC Effect specifies "giving a tip," the Director decides what that tip is. They're free to give information that pushes the plot forward, but vague hints or advice are also permissible.
  67.
  68.
  69. ---------- Style Skills
  70. Some [Timing: Appearance Check] style skills may have the phrase, "apply an RSC effect" in their descriptions. These skills are referred to as RS Skills, or Random Scene Skills, and players may attempt their checks at the appropriate timing.
  71.
  72. >>>>> Checks
  73. The difficulty for an RS Skill check is the same for a normal Appearance Check. Any modifiers that would apply do so as normal. If successful, that scene is eligible for an RSC effect as normal, and if a failure, then it is not eligible. Even if the check fails however, the scene player does not retreat from the scene. Cast who do not have such a skill cannot declare an RSC effect. Simlarly, Guests and Troops can't do so at all.
  74.
  75. ---------- Outfits
  76. When a character uses an outfit that has "apply an RSC effect" in its description, then apply an RSC effect to the scene.
  77.
  78.
  79. (1) "They may choose one" - They may not, for example, use an Outfit after failing the check.
  80.
  81. Trump Cards - If using the Trump Card rule, then the Cast have had the tarot card corresponding to their Key style placed in their hands. Because of this, it can't really appear as a scene tarot. If the relative advantages/disadvantages of this worry you, then simply cease handing out the tarot card to the players, and instead use a check box on the character sheet (making one if you need to) to show whether or not a character has used their trump card this Act or not.
  82.
  83. House Rule - When using an RS Skill, it may be jarring to use Parkour and end up at a net cafe. As such, it might be interesting to offer players the choice to either specifically use the scene tarot corresponding to the style of the RS skill used (Parkour uses Chakra, Hunch uses Fate, etc), or to indeed use a random card.
  84.

  274. ----------------------------------------
