- 'Saw Princess leaving her father's private office, carrying a lamp. Looked troubled. Glad she did not see me. But how will I face her father?'
- I remembered that particular night well. I had to decide what to do in a split second, before the guards' patrol brought them back to this corridor. So I slipped into the office she'd just left.
- The room looked much as usual, of course. She would not have disturbed anything too obvious. But when I looked more closely at the racks of scrolls, there was one protruding further out than the rest. I dared a quick look. A report on her uncle's army, by the look of it, although of course I could not understand the details.
- I tucked the scroll back into its pigeonhole, more thoroughly than the Princess had done, and crept away the next time the guards had just moved past the door.
