- ---
- We will NOT meet on Tuesday, November 8. Instead, we WILL meet on Wednesday, November 9.
- ---
- Homework: reading practice tests and choose one topic for an independent writing (from the list I will email to you)
- ---
- Speaking questions 5 and 6 - integrated listening/speaking
- - Listen to the conversation or lecture and take notes
- - Hear and read the question.
- - 20 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak
- ---
- Question 5 -
- Your answer will probably include 6 parts:
- 1 Explain the problem the person is having. (“They are talking about the man’s problem with…”)
- 2 List the solutions they discuss (“They talk about two possible solutions. First…, Second…)
- 3 State your opinion (“In my opinion, the man should…”)
- 4 Lead-in (“I have two reasons for this position.”)
- 5 First reason (advantage of your choice or disadvantage of the other choice)
- 6 Second reason (advantage of your choice or disadvantage of the other choice)
- ---
- ETS Test 1 speaking 5 (p. 54-55)
- - You spent too much time explaining the first solution the speakers discussed. Just list the solutions in step 2: “They discuss two solutions. First, he could go to a computer lab and check his schedule for the whole day. Second, he could check each of the lecture halls in this building to find the one with his class.”
- - Then in steps 5 and 6 you can explain the pros and cons of the options.

- p. 55 speaking 6
- - This is a summary task, so you’ll have as many main points as the speaker did. (usually 2 or 3)
- - The “introduction” states the topic: “The lecture is about the use of visual elements in painting and why they’re important. / and how they affect the emotions.”
- - Then say, “She talks about two visual elements: color and texture.”
- 1 Introduce the topic.
- 2 Lead-in about the points the professor makes.
- 3 First point.
- 4 Details of the first point. (In this case, the details are the effects of color on the emotions)
- 5 Second point
- 6 Details of the second point.
- (maybe 7-8 for the third point)
- ---
- p. 120-121 (Test 2 speaking 5-6)
- - In question 6, you should maybe use the words “extrinsic” and “intrinsic” as part of your introduction, then go on to explain the two types of motivation in more detail.
- - Also, you finished a bit too soon. You could have taken a few extra seconds to talk about how extrinsic motivation isn’t as long-lasting (because the child will stop doing the chores if her allowance stops).
- ---
- No more homework for today (finish your reading and do a full independent writing). Tomorrow we’ll talk about the integrated writing. (It’s similar in many ways to the academic integrated speaking, but it’s more complex because you have 20 minutes to write about it.)
