  11. Let’s see a movie. - in a cinema
  12. Let’s watch a movie. - at home
  13. ---
  14. We define the idiom with, “to be unable to act one’s way out of a paper bag”.
  15. In conversation, we say, “He can’t act his way out of a paper bag,” or “she can’t act her…”.

  17. Grammar and pronunciation: modals about the past
  18. (modals: will/would, shall/should, can/could, may/might, must, ought to, had better)
  19.
  20. I called his phone but he didn’t answer. He must have turned it off.
  21. I got a bad grade on the test. I should have studied more.
  22.
  23. We almost always reduce the pronunciation of “have” in these sentences:
  24. must have -> must’ve -> must’a
  25. should have -> should’ve -> should’a
  26. could have -> could’ve -> could’a
  27. would have -> would’ve -> would’a
  28. might have -> might’ve -> might’a (this also has the “flapped” t-sound)
  29. (Some native speakers write “should of”, “could of”, etc., because they don’t know it’s supposed to be “have”.)
  30.
  31. We can also reduce negatives:
  32. shouldn’t have -> shouldn’a
  33. couldn’t have -> couldn’a
  34. wouldn’t have -> wouldn’a
  35. ---
  36. p. 30 - With partners, choose words from the box to complete the sentences. Then listen and check.
  37. 1 must’a been
  38. 2 should’a
  39. 3 must’a
  40. 4 should’a gotten
  41. 5 wouldn’a
  42. 6 could’a
  43. 7 shouldn’a
  44. 8 must’a been, wouldn’a been
  45. ---
  46. “Woulda, coulda, shoulda,” in any order, can mean that you’re thinking too much about what might have been, and you should focus on the present and future instead.
  47. ---
  48. Words with a ‘t’ (or ‘d’) that would be flapped normally, but where the next consonant is ‘n’, often have the vowel left out completely:
  49. gotten -> got’n
  50. important -> import’nt
  51. cotton -> cot’n
  52. wooden -> wood’n
