his name is azarius, nickname "az" as in, "i cover everything from a to z" "az, shut the fuck up." he isn't human, he's a species that is more avian in origin as opposed to humans being ape-like or galra being feline/lizard like. humanoid in appearance because uh i'm lazy, but various feathered bits, especially in his hair. light boned, which makes him wicked fast on his feet, but he's easily injured, especially because he is an act first, think later kind of person. would be a red paladin. red bonded with him quickly, and regretted it just as fast because this guy is just.... obstinate and does not listen to anyone unless it suits him, and it rarely does.

he was the top of his class back in whatever equivalent to the garrison that his species has, but was a social outcast because he was an idiot and boastful and quick to anger. got in a lot of fights but was so smart that they kept him around. the capital city was raided by galra and most of his people were killed or sent to work camps. az was sent to a prison, which just so happened to be where they were housing the red lion.
through circumstances that i don't care to come up with, az found himself running from guards, probably sporting a handful of broken bones and a concussion and having taken out a good number of galra himself. he happened upon the red lion and had no idea what the fuck it was, but figured it was a good place to hide so he let himself into the giant cat mouth, not realizing the implication until holy shit this is a ship! it's on! what the fuck! let's go.

His name is Maddox but his Garrison buddies all called him "Mad Dog" and it was a complete misnomer because he's the biggest bleeding heart coward there ever was until Disaster Time hits and he gets punched in the face with a fist made of courage. He's a stickler for rules up until it ends up getting other people into trouble, at which point he thinks, "welp, fuck it, we're in the shit now, might as well let loose." His Deal started when a friend of his tried to stow away onto a deep-space research ship and Maddox, while originally intending on stopping him, ends up getting taken along for the ride. Their fight for control of the ship resulted in it crashing somewhere in the desert, and while Maddox made it out (mostly) unscathed, his bro was not so lucky. Injured and grieving, he wanders for some sign of life and ends up stumbling on the Blue Lion quite by accident, and while he might not be her destined Paladin, she sensed there was something in him that needed her guidance and took it upon herself to insist that he get in the fucking robot, Shinji.

his skin is white, with his hands and feet being black and taloned and a little rough but frankly i dont want to deal with the idea of gross bird feet so uh just colored strange
his species doesn't have wings (although some babies are born with vestigial wing nubs like sometimes babies are born with tails) but they do have a few rows of feathers on the backs of their arms and legs that make them adept at gliding. az is great at doing it at high speeds over short distances, but sucks at sustaining or controlling it.
so like he could jump off a building and aim himself at one stationary or very slow moving target and hit it, but he couldn't jump off a building, glide for a mile, turn left, and find the target-- but it is a capability in his species
clothing in his species tends to be tight fitting and cut to ensure maximum feather usage
loose, flowy clothing is considered formalwear and absolutely frivolous. wearing something like that would be like saying "i am positive i'm in no danger, nothing bad will happen to me and i won't need to fight or flight"
granted, it's an advanced society and it's definitely like 96% a social norm and not a legitimate fear, but it's still upheld. as favors tight fitting clothing with bare arms and i haven't figured out the legs yet so shrug uh.
he has these big feathered ears that are expressive and fuck and his hearing is excellent. which is a catch 22 because he hears everything and adjusting to the sounds on the castle is hard because there's always a constant hum of engines and squeaking mice and he's used to total silence or a special white noise machine that incidentally sounds like a human heart beating cough

God, this is so much
But god, okay, you've done SO MUCH GOOD WORLDBUILDING and I feel bad for not pulling my weight but there's not exactly much Human Lore™ to go through so lemme just talk about Mads and his history for a second. He's the complete opposite of Az in terms of social position, he was born into a very large, poor family all crammed into one apartment. Their one chance at gaining a decent living was the income his father brought in by joining up the Garrison, but that meant he was basically absent during Maddox's entire adolescence. When he was 15, his father died due to an engine malfunction during a routine flight, leaving them without any extra money,  and it meant that he had to step up and take care of his younger siblings while his mom worked herself to the point of exhaustion. He tried getting a job to take at least some of the burden off of her, but he couldn't work and manage the house, so he was stuck until he turned 18, at which point the only option available for him was to follow his father and enlist at the Garrison the moment his birthday passed. The sad reality is he didn't have any dreams about exploring the stars, but it was a guaranteed way to be able to support his family, and his mother fought him every step of the way, convinced that he was going to die the same way as his father or worse. It broke his heart to have to leave her and he still thinks she'll never forgive him, even after hearing of his "tragic disappearance," which weighs on him heavily.
Right before the ship that brought him to the Blue Lion crashes, his final thought was, "Well, I guess she was right, after all."

If he had to pilot a magical lion robot, why couldn't it have been the nice blue one? He could handle being a leg, not nearly as much pressure, please please please switch with him. He doesn't have a leading bone in his body, but Allura is adamant that this is what his quintessence is made of, and sure enough, when all the lions come together, Black responds under his touch. He needs a lot of coaxing to be able to take charge, but when the Galra attack and it's sink or swim, he's belting out orders with the best of them, and who knew he had the voice of a drill sargeant when it counted? Definitely not him.
