- Dear Sheridan Community,
- On Sunday, November 19, 2017, the provincial government passed back-to-work legislation (Bill 178) which has ended the Ontario college strike.
- Term Dates
- Sheridan professors, librarians and counsellors will return to work on Monday, November 20 to prepare for classes to resume on Tuesday, November 21.
- To enable all students to complete their academic year, the fall semester has been extended until January 12, 2018. The additional weeks of instruction that have been added include December 18-22, 2017, January 2-5, 2018 and January 8-12, 2018. There will be no classes running during the holiday break of December 23, 2017 - January 1, 2018 inclusive.
- At Sheridan, the five-week long strike included a one-week Fall Reading Week for most of our programs. Three weeks of instruction time have now been added to the fall term (as outlined above), leaving one week worth of learning still to be considered. We are confident that our faculty and staff will overcome this challenge in a way that helps students to meet their course learning outcomes while balancing a focus on student wellness and success.
- Winter Reading Week
- The Winter Semester will begin on January 22, 2018 and end on April 27, 2018. Sheridan is committed to maintaining the Reading Week break, which is scheduled for February 26-March 2, 2018 (no scheduled classes for most programs).
- Joint Programs
- Students in joint programs with Brock will follow the Sheridan term dates.
- Students in the joint York-Sheridan program will continue to follow the dates as outlined in the York calendar.
- For students in joint Sheridan-UTM programs, more information will be shared by UTM on Monday, November 20 regarding the completion of the semester.
- We are mindful that your exam weeks starting after December 4, will pose additional challenges to recovery of the semester. Your faculty will be working with you to develop amended and streamlined course syllabi that will address all learning outcomes. In addition, we will be creating a schedule for studio access with faculty present who can offer up individual support.
- We are fully committed to working together with our joint program partners to ensure that students receive sufficient support to complete their semester.
- Assignments
- Sheridan has committed to maintaining a period of three business days after classes resume where no tests, assignments, or rescheduled assessments, would be due. This means that there will not be any tests, exams, assignments, or any rescheduled assessments, that will be due any time during the first three business days after classes resume. Professors will communicate revised dates for exams, tests and assignments.
- Field Placements and Practicums
- Sheridan faculty and staff will be communicating directly with our partners to determine the appropriate dates for field placements and practicums to restart. These specific dates will be communicated directly to students by their professors. Faculty and staff are currently determining whether any additional adjustments are required to placements and practicums to make up for time lost in the field due to the strike. This information will be shared directly with students as soon as it is known.
- Faculty and staff will be reviewing all placement requirements and communicating with our placement/practicum partners to determine the appropriate dates to resume all field placements and practicums. These specific dates will be communicated to students directly by their professor or field practicum coordinator.
- Decisions relating to making up field placement or practicum hours are being reviewed. We will continue to work with students and partner agencies to find a meaningful and responsible solution that supports student learning and the requirements of any related accrediting bodies. Specific requirements for making up placement hours will be communicated to students directly by their professor or field practicum coordinator.
- Academic Accommodations for Holiday Travel
- As previously announced, Sheridan will endeavour to academically accommodate students who booked holiday travel prior to October 30, 2017.
- Students are required to fill out a form entitled Request for Academic Accommodation Due to Scheduled Travel. Forms are available at each Faculty office. Please attach copies of relevant documentation, including booking confirmation, and drop off the completed form with the attached documents at your Faculty office. The deadline to submit the form is 5 business days following the return to classes.
- Your submission will be reviewed and a decision will be communicated to you via your Sheridan email within two business days of receipt. If additional information is requested, the decision may take more than two business days.
- Further Updates
- Please continue to monitor your Sheridan email as developments can occur quickly. In the interim, please continue to send us your questions and concerns; they help us reflect on what we’re doing, and where there are gaps. You can send your comments to 905-815-4070 or sheridanstrikehotline@sheridancollege.ca.
- As always, we will do our best to respond promptly, and provide whatever answers we have to share.
- Sincerely,
- Mary Preece
- President and Vice Chancellor
