  1. The night air was cold at the foot of Mt. Ebott, and snow was piling around the monster and human’s feet. Their breaths were visible in the crisp wind, eventually dissipating. But tonight there was good reason to be out in the cold.
  2.
  3. Alphys checked her phone, “Three minutes left, guys!” she announced. The group nearly shook with anticipation, the first New Year’s for monsterkind since they returned to the surface.
  4.
  5. The clock ticked ever so slowly, seconds seeming to drag slowly, a horrible ritardando. They all feverishly checked their phones, hoping to make the waiting stop. It was just too exciting.
  6.
  7. “Did they celebrate New Year’s back before the war the same way as now?” asked Frisk to her parents. The two looked at each other, trying to remember if they did in fact throw celebrations and drink for the last day of the year.
  8.
  9. “Hmm,” thought Asgore, “I don’t think we celebrated as much as nowadays, I think the most people did was march drunkenly through the streets.
  10.
  11. “So not much has changed,” said Frisk with a laugh, “But you’ll get to see the fireworks.”
  12.
  13. “WHAT’S A FIREWORK?” asked Papyrus.
  14.
  15. “They’re explosions shot out into the sky that paint it in dazzling light and colors. There’s all sorts of different shapes and routines!”
  16.
  17. “WOWIE! THAT SOUNDS LIKE FUN!”
  18.
  19. Before Frisk could respond, Alphys jumped excitedly. “It’s almost time! Get ready guys!”
  20.
  21. The scientist started the countdown, “Five!”
  22.
  23. The other members joined in, “Four!”
  24.
  25. “Three!”
  26.
  27. “Two!”
  28.
  29. “ONE!” with the final yell, what looked like a spark exploded into the sky, filling the midnight with brilliant colors. All of the monsters were awestruck, their mouths agape and eyes staring. The bright colors of red, pink, blue and orange reflected off of their eyes and clothing.
  30.
  31. The first few were simple, basic lights flashing in a multitude of colors, but were still pretty to look at. Over time, they grew more and more intricate, some going into odd shapes and changing colors halfway through. Some even caused a second explosion to make more, smaller versions of the original. “Oohs” and “Ahhs” were heard from the monsters, Sans’s grin stretched even further.
  32.
  33. The show grew more and more amazing as time went on, some slow and large, making the whole sky light up with just one burst. A few were rapidly fired and streaked across the sky. Some even had distinguishable shapes and what looked like monsters.
  34.
  35. A Loox popped up, their eye even blinking as they flashed in the sky. Many other monsters made appearances, Woshua and their little bird friend. Muffet in a sparkling web. Glyde even flew through the sky, though Frisk didn’t pay him any attention.
  36.
  37. The show went on, completely encapturing the audience at the entrance of Mt. Ebott. The final act was coming, an nearly endless torrent of sparks flew through the night. A few more monsters showed up. The most notable was Mettaton. Many glamour shots, both as a box and in his model form, even his legs were shown just by themselves. They had quite the following. The finale came, a large Delta Rune popping up in the sky and lingering for what felt like forever.
  38.
  39. When the fireworks stopped and the smoke cleared, the group let out the breath they were holding.
  40.
  41. “Wow,” said Asgore, nearly speechless.
  42.
  43. The group all nodded in agreement, for they too were at a loss for words.
