  2. In his Descent of Man, Charles Darwin tells us that savages such as he met in Tierra del Fuego spoke largely in grunts and had almost no vocabulary. Yet missionaries visited the place not long after Darwin and compiled a dictionary of their language, finding they possessed a vocabulary of over 30,000 words.
  3. +TonySnark
  4. Hi Chris10
  5. Darwin wasn't a linguist then. *shrug*
  6. +Chris10
  7. TonySnark: What's interesting is that this was reported to Darwin.
  8. TonySnark: He was so impressed he donated to the mission organization.
  9. +Glitterbee
  10. Chris10: Why do you think Christians lie about America being a Christian nation?
  11. +TonySnark
  12. I am unsure why that should be interesting.
  13. +Chris10
  14. TonySnark: So that's the mark of a good scientist - a willingness to be wrong; in fact, a desire to see one's guesses overturned.
  15. +Glitterbee
  16. Do you think it is because they sense their culture is obsolete in the face of modernity?
  17. +Chris10
  18. Glitterbee: I can't speak for other Christians but I've never said it is.
  19. +Glitterbee
  20. Yuval Harari in Homo Deus claims all religions are obsolete.
  21. +TonySnark
  22. There are two senses that could be taken.
  23. And in one sense it certainly is a Christian nation.
  24. +Glitterbee
  25. He states that real change is being pushed by the techno-cultures, while religions merely respond to these changes with rehashings of old morals.
  26. +Chris10
  27. Three cheers for Yuval Harari ...
  28. +TonySnark
  29. The majority population of Christian makes this socially a Christian nation.
  30. +Glitterbee
  31. The American nation-state is secular with a majority Christian population.
  32. American the nation has never been a Christian nation.
  33. +Chris10
  34. TonySnark: True - there are indeed Christian foundations to the nation but it is NOT a Christian nation in the sense that the government gives favors for being a Christian or imposes penalties for choosing not to be.
  35. +Glitterbee
  36. There are really very few Christian 'foundations' in America.
  37. +TonySnark
  38. Chris10: do you think I didn't know that?
  39. +Chris10
  40. TonySnark: I think you did ... but others here may not.
  41. +Glitterbee
  42. Chris10: Islamists sense their culture is losing -- so they return to orthodoxy in a last ditch attempt for relevancy.
  43. American Christianity is going through a weaker version of the same.
  44. +Chris10
  45. TonySnark: Wouldn't it also be true that predominently Christian nations tend to have freedom of religion?
  46. +Glitterbee
  47. Christian nations do not have freedom of religion typically, no.
  48. Secular nations with majority Christian populations often have freedom of religion.
  49. If you want to see the nature of Christian polities, I invite you to 16 and 17th century Europe.
  50. +TonySnark
  51. Glitterbee: "American the nation has never been a Christian nation." depends on which meaning of the word "nation" one is refering to.
  52. +Chris10
  53. Glitterbee: Well - no, I agree with Nabeel Qureshi on this one; the reason many Muslims are turning to orthodoxy is because they are finally learning what Islamic "orthodoxy" is because they can read the Qur'an and Hadiths in their own language.
  54. +Glitterbee
  55. You will witness a world of brutality and tribalism.
  56. +TonySnark
  57. It can mean government, it can mean the people.
  58. Chris10: only in the modern world.
  59. +Glitterbee
  60. Chris10: Islam is in crisis and many of its adherents know this -- whether the know it or not.
  61. It is hard to continue to believe you're the 'chosen people' when your economies are inferior and your territories are occupied.
  62. +TonySnark
  63. Whether the what know it or not?
  64. +Glitterbee
  65. As a crisis cult, Islam tells diagnoses its problem by saying the followers haven't been TRUE followers of Islam.
  66. +Chris10
  67. TonySnark: Right - the internet has provided the means for this and Qureshi sees three alternatives. (1) Be an unorthodox Muslim - i.e., the "moderates" ... (2) Apostacize and become something else ... (3) Become orthodox and that can lead to (so-called) "radialization."
  68. +Glitterbee
  69. It is a pathetic attempt to respond to change.
  70. +Chris10
  71. Glitterbee: Islam is in crisis because the truths about it are coming to light.
  72. +TonySnark
  73. Chris10: my remark about the modern world was to your point about predominatly Christian nations.
  74. +Glitterbee
  75. Chris10: Have you seen the documentary Hypernormalization?
  76. +Chris10
  77. TonySnark: Right - though that "modern" concept would be 20th century to now.
  78. +Glitterbee
  79. Islam doesn't know how to adapt to the change created by contemporary technology.
  80. +Chris10
  81. Glitterbee: Nope.
  82. +Glitterbee
  83. It's floundering.
  84. Chris10: This documentary claims that the elites of the Soviet Union knew the system was broken at least 20 years before its collapse, but they did not know what to replace it with.
  85. +Chris10
  86. Glitterbee: I know that - more Muslims have converted to Christianity in the last 15 years than in the previous 14 centuries.
  87. +Glitterbee
  88. They elites then hypernormalized the pending crisis by pretending everything is fine. The non-elites subconsciously understood what the elites explicitly knew and explored it through art.
  89. There is a claim America is in a current phase.
  90. +TonySnark
  91. North Korea claims to have just tested a hydrogen bomb that can be mounted on a missile. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41139445
  92. +Glitterbee
  93. Islam has been in such a phase for much of the second half of the 20th century and beyond.
  94. +Chris10
  95. TonySnark: They need to run another test... in Kim's living room.
  96. +Glitterbee
  97. Allowing Trump to be president during a North Korea crisis is a clear and present danger to the nation.

  99. +Glitterbee
  100. The system either needs to impeach, indict, or execute Donald Trump before such a crisis.

  110. Based on what?
  111. +Glitterbee
  112. It's a simple deduction from the principle of monotonicity and human value.
  113. +Chris10
  114. Glitterbee: This room frowns on all advocacy of killing.
  115. Glitterbee: I suggest you quit now.
  116. +TonySnark
  117. Wait
  118. +Glitterbee
  119. Chris10: I am currently conducting political philosophy.

  121. You're Lania aren't you?
  122. @QRT
  123. I STRONGLY suggest you quit now.
  124. +Glitterbee
  125. Such political philosophy is explicitly covered by the 1st Amendment and Watts v. United States.
  126. I can cite the relevant case law.
  127. @QRT
  128. This isn't America. Stop now.
  129. +Glitterbee

  142. +Glitterbee
  143. There is a human currently typing for QRT.
  144. That person is a false follower of Christ.
  145. And directly violates teachings from the mouth of the Messiah.
  146. Repent, sinner.
  147. @QRT
