But that's because IRON DOME!  So many deaths without it!  Nope, Iron Dome only became operational in 2011 and the very low death toll before is the same as after.  Iron Dome is most likely just theater to explain why so many deaths have occurred, plus a way to get more money out of the US:

HAMAS REFUSED OUR PEACE OFFER:
Hamas refused because the Israeli proposal "did not deal with some of the group's major demands: a conclusive end of Israel and Egypt's blockade on Gaza, and the release of certain prisoners from Israeli jails."

HAMAS USES HUMAN SHIELDS:
There is no independently verified evidence of the Israeli claim that Hamas is forcing people to act as human shields, and when Hamas leaders have been killed by Israeli air strikes, they have not once been surrounded by a ring of human shield dead.

The one piece of evidence they provide for this allegation is a video by MEMRI, a group founded by Mossad.  This is like trusting the NSA or CIA to tell us factual information about Russia, Iran or Snowden.

Norman Finkelstein characterizes MEMRI as "a main arm of Israeli propaganda. Although widely used in the mainstream media as a source of information on the Arab world, it is as trustworthy as Julius Streicher’s Der Sturmer was on the Jewish world."

TUNNELS:
These are primarily for smuggling goods because Gaza is locked in and unable to control their own air, land and sea borders to develop legal import routes.

Even if they were used to smuggle people or arms into Israel, it would be easier, safe and cheaper to find the exits on the Israeli side and destroy them there rather than engage in an invasion and risk civilian and Israeli casualties.



More mainstream articles about the tunnels being used mostly for rather mundane smuggling.  If National Geographic can get access to them, it shouldn't be difficult for Israel to destroy them without bombing all of Gaza.

SO WHY THE WAR?

Israel wants to undermine the peace process and continue the war. The more Israel keeps war alive, the more the conflict is played out in their favor. Militarily they are much stronger than Palestine, diplomatically not so much. Palestine has the upper hand there and the support of the international community. The US and Israel have a much more difficult time condemning UN recognition of Palestinian statehood than they do Hamas failbombs.  As long as this remains a military and not diplomatic conflict, Israel has the upper hand.
