  53. >"No other country on the planet would put up with this!"
  54. There are illegal tunnels into America from Mexico smuggling in illegals including gang members who cost the US more in security and services and kill more Americans every year than Israel suffers from Hamas. Would any other country in the world tolerate the US bombing civilians in Mexico City to resolve the border crisis?
  55.
  56. >"If we wanted to kill civilians, we could kill a lot more."
  57. >"It's not our fault if we're just better at war, Hamas started it."
  58. No one is surprised that one of the most technologically sophisticated militaries in the world can kill a lot of civilians if it wanted to. It's Israel's responsibility to provide justification for the ones they actually are killing, not the ones they could kill. Also, from Human Rights Watch: "Israeli forces may also have knowingly or recklessly attacked people who were clearly civilians, such as young boys, and civilian structures, including a hospital"

  71. HAMAS ROCKETS:

  79.
  80.

  89.
  90. But that's because IRON DOME! So many deaths without it! Nope, Iron Dome only became operational in 2011 and the very low death toll before is the same as after. Iron Dome is most likely just theater to explain why so many deaths have occurred, plus a way to get more money out of the US:
  91. >"Iron Dome appears to have had no measurable effect on improving the chances of Israelis escaping injury or death from Hamas artillery rocket attacks in Israel."

  97.
  98. HAMAS REFUSED OUR PEACE OFFER:
  99. Hamas refused because the Israeli proposal "did not deal with some of the group's major demands: a conclusive end of Israel and Egypt's blockade on Gaza, and the release of certain prisoners from Israeli jails."
  100. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/16/egypt-no-negotiations-gaza-ceasefire-israel-hamas
  101.
  102.
  103.
  104. Hamas' own peace proposal offered to Israel included the following:
  105. >lifting the siege of Gaza
  106. >economic development of the territory
  107. >UN supervision of borders, crossings, the airport and seaport
  108. >easing conditions for permits to pray at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque
  109. >respect for the national reconciliation deal
  110. >and the freeing of Palestinians detained since the abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers last month
  111.
  112. Not exactly unreasonable, but Israel refused and chose to invade:

However, so far Israel ignores the rights of the Palestinian nation. Hamas agrees to the idea of creating a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with full sovereignty. The occupation forces must leave our lands they occupied in 1967,” he said.

  124. HAMAS USES HUMAN SHIELDS:
  125. There is no independently verified evidence of the Israeli claim that Hamas is forcing people to act as human shields, and when Hamas leaders have been killed by Israeli air strikes, they have not once been surrounded by a ring of human shield dead.
  126.
  127. The one piece of evidence they provide for this allegation is a video by MEMRI, a group founded by Mossad. This is like trusting the NSA or CIA to tell us factual information about Russia, Iran or Snowden.
  128.
  129. Norman Finkelstein characterizes MEMRI as "a main arm of Israeli propaganda. Although widely used in the mainstream media as a source of information on the Arab world, it is as trustworthy as Julius Streicher’s Der Sturmer was on the Jewish world."

  134. >Israel-Gaza conflict: The myth of Hamas’s human shields
  135. >"The Bani Sobeila area, near Khan Younis, where the Abu Jamaa deaths took place received leaflets dropped from the air last week warning them to leave."
  136. >"But almost all stayed. One reason for that was many of the houses belonged to the Abu Jamaa clan who felt there was safety in staying together. Another reason was given by a neighbour, Abdullah al-Daweish: 'Where do we go to? Some people moved from the outer edge of Khan Younis to Khan Younis centre after Israelis told them to, then the centre got bombed. People have moved from this area to Gaza City, and Gaza City has been bombed. It’s not Hamas who is ordering us in this, it’s the Israelis.'"
  137. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/israelgaza-conflict-the-myth-of-hamass-human-shield-9619810.html
  138.
  139.
  140.
  141. >Collective punishment or human shields? Israel’s military has no “moral superiority,” time for media to cover Gaza fairly
  142. >"While human rights organizations haven’t yet addressed 'human shields' allegations in the ongoing round of Israel-Gaza violence, they did after the 2009 round when Israel killed at least 773 Palestinian civilians, compared to three Israeli civilian casualties (a ratio of 257:1), and used the same “human shields” argument to deflect responsibility for those deaths. When the dust settled, Amnesty International investigated the matter and concluded that there was 'no evidence that [Palestinian] rockets were launched from residential houses or buildings while civilians were in these buildings.'"
  143. http://www.salon.com/2014/07/18/israels_military_has_no_moral_superiority_and_its_time_the_media_covered_gaza_fairly/
  144.
  145.
  146.
  147. Human Rights Watch found that the civilian dead in Gaza they investigated were due to Israel having "knowingly or recklessly attacked people": "The attacks Human Rights Watch investigated include a missile attack that killed four boys on a Gaza City pier and wounded three others, multiple strikes over several days on a hospital for paralyzed and elderly patients, attacks on an apparent civilian residence and media worker’s car, and four previously documented strikes. In many, if not all, of these cases, Human Rights Watch found no evidence of a military target. Israeli forces’ failure to direct attacks at a military target violates the laws of war. Israeli forces may also have knowingly or recklessly attacked people who were clearly civilians, such as young boys, and civilian structures, including a hospital – laws-of-war violations that are indicative of war crimes."

  158. TUNNELS:
  159. These are primarily for smuggling goods because Gaza is locked in and unable to control their own air, land and sea borders to develop legal import routes.
  160. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/morning-mix-inside-the-smuggling-tunnels-of-gaza/2014/07/21/0f6c5520-109b-11e4-9285-4243a40ddc97_gallery.html#item7
  161.
  162.
  163.
  164. Even if they were used to smuggle people or arms into Israel, it would be easier, safe and cheaper to find the exits on the Israeli side and destroy them there rather than engage in an invasion and risk civilian and Israeli casualties.
  165.
  166.
  167.
  168. More mainstream articles about the tunnels being used mostly for rather mundane smuggling. If National Geographic can get access to them, it shouldn't be difficult for Israel to destroy them without bombing all of Gaza.

  179. SO WHY THE WAR?
  180.
  181. *************************************************************************
  182.
  183. Israel wants to undermine the peace process and continue the war. The more Israel keeps war alive, the more the conflict is played out in their favor. Militarily they are much stronger than Palestine, diplomatically not so much. Palestine has the upper hand there and the support of the international community. The US and Israel have a much more difficult time condemning UN recognition of Palestinian statehood than they do Hamas failbombs. As long as this remains a military and not diplomatic conflict, Israel has the upper hand.

  187. >It's Déjà Vu in Gaza All Over Again
  188. >'Ever since the unity government was announced, Israel has been absolutely hell-bent on doing absolutely anything to pull it apart.'
  189. >That is precisely what’s behind the latest escalation, Palestinian, Israeli, and foreign critics have observed. A threat more dangerous than Hamas’s rockets — which in practical terms, are all but useless — is Palestinian unity, and a moderate partner with which Israel would have to engage.
  190. >“After the Hamas-Fatah agreement became public, it was clearly just a matter of time before this happened," Landau said. "The Iranian situation was pushed in the background, Bibi’s [Netanyahu’s] slogan, that Iran is gonna bomb us next week, didn’t really catch, so now the big threat — because there always has to be a big threat — is Palestinian unity.”
  191. >What Israel really doesn’t want, critics say, is a definitive solution, and Netanyahu admitted that much last week, in an offhand observation that went largely unnoticed.

  196. >Hamas had been losing support in Gaza, so if Israel wanted a weaker Hamas, they could just wait. But by bombing, they could provoke Gazans into more hardline support, and Israel could continue to claim they have no partner in the peace process.
  197. >"Hamas’s biggest weakness of all is its unpopularity among Palestinians in Gaza now. A poll taken in June, before the latest fighting began, showed that 70 percent of Gazans wanted a continuing cease-fire with Israel; 57 percent wanted a Fatah-Hamas unity government to renounce violence against Israel; 73 percent thought nonviolent resistance had a positive impact, and large majority thought Hamas had failed to deal with crime and corruption."

  285. ISRAEL CREATED HAMAS:
  286.
  287. >Instead of trying to curb Gaza's Islamists from the outset, says Mr. Cohen, Israel for years tolerated and, in some cases, encouraged them as a counterweight to the secular nationalists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and its dominant faction, Yasser Arafat's Fatah. Israel cooperated with a crippled, half-blind cleric named Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, even as he was laying the foundations for what would become Hamas. Sheikh Yassin continues to inspire militants today; during the recent war in Gaza, Hamas fighters confronted Israeli troops with "Yassins," primitive rocket-propelled grenades named in honor of the cleric.
