- Q: Lead chelation-CHILD

- I have a 4-yo boy who came back high for lead in a provoked
- (captomer) heavy metal urine test.
- His lead was 61.3. The 95% chelated reference range is under 30.
- I know that IV EDTA is best for lead, but since this is just a
- little guy, does anyone have any advise regarding an oral
- alternative?
- Thanks,

- Emily,
- I successfully addressed lead in a one-year old child with the
- following protocol:
- Pro-Omega Liquid ½ tsp., every other day.
- Chlorella caps 1 cap, twice a day
- Blue Green Algae 1 cap, twice a day
- with algaes–if possible, open and put into food, smoothies (or
- do 2 caps, once a day)
- Vitamin C (Scorbatate) ¼ tsp., twice a day, in water or with
- molasses in water (& algae….?)
- Gammadyn Cu-Au-Ag ½ amp, twice a day (discard unused 1/2 amp,
- will not stay good overnight)
- Unda #3, 9, 48 4 drops, twice a day (straight, off a spoon or in
- water or juice)
- Plumbum 200K Give 5 pellets once every 2 weeks.
- While I encouraged parents to do a follow-up lead test (stool),
- this was not done, since the child perked right up and cleared
- all of her symptoms related to the lead shortly after starting
- the protocol.

- I have successfully chelated my son (age 8 months - 2 years) and
- a few other children under age 3 with DMSA, Liver Support, Whey,
- Basic Detox Nutrients and the typical Crinnion protocol, but
- refigured for age/wt of the child. For the younger ones, we
- mixed the supplements in applesauce or at 8 months, mom took
- the supportive supplements and we didid DMSA suppositories. But
- at age 4, the child should be able to swallow the pills (with
- practice - place pill with water in mouth, then tilt head
- forward and the pills float to the throat.
- At this age, the dosage is probably about 50-100 mg DMSA every
- 3-4 hours, plus one Liver Support & 2-4 Basic Detox Nutrients &
- 1/2 -1 scoop whey + Vit C mixed into applesauce and eaten in 3-4
- divided doses. Assure regular elimination & high fiber since
- colon therapy would obviously be counterindicated, but you can
- still do constitutional therapy and even some very careful
- sauna or a warm bath. I usually chelated for only 3 days and
- then still did 11 days of the supportive (applesauce
- supplements plus Heavy Metal Support) supplements.
- One child did have some mood problems during chelation, but the
- others tolerated it extremely well.

- I'll second Kristin's DMSA vote, by realize I'm in an unlicensed
- state, so that was the 'hammer' I had.
- Cautions are: 1) be careful if you chelate more than 2 days at a
- time, which will increase the risk of chelating necessary
- nutrients. 2) put at least 3 weeks between chelation cycles. 3)
- watch cal, mag, zinc, EFAs, coq10, and vitamin A deficiency
- (check back of arms for hyper keratosis pilaris / little bumps
- on back of arms and front of quads. 4) and yes, keep them
- pooping!
- It can be very successful.

- I have a case like this now too.
- I am using DMSA. Doctors Data has a protocol of mg/kg etc they
- will share with you and check the kidneys first.
- Did you kid get exposed to recalled toys? Mine did.
- Also- did the exposure happen in 2010- or late 2009 - during the
- Tylenol recall? And had they used it?
- I am very suspicious about the kids who took the recalled
- Tylenol and if anyone has a lead case that seems to have been
- exposed around that time please share.

- Jill's suggestions are good - I would personally be OK with a 3
- day chelation cycle followed by 11 days off. DMSA (Chemet) was
- originally developed to treat lead poisoning in children.
- During the initial testing they used the drug for 45 days
- straight; even with this protocol most of the children did OK,
- but a few had increases in liver enzymes or bone marrow
- suppression. It is always good to insure good liver/renal
- function and normal CBC prior to initiation of therapy. Using
- treatment cycles as suggested has been very safe with little
- evidence of either liver, kidney or bone marrow harm.

- I am curious of other's experience with oral CaEDTA for lead
- reduction? Especially those of you with higher Ns.
- I have used variations of on/off DMSA with kids and adults with
- generally good tolerance. I have also used oral CaEDTA a lot in
- both populations depending on their individual situations and
- tolerance and have generally good tolerance with it as well. In
- my patients they both gave good results and rapid lead lowering.
- In my experience overall, DMSA has significantly more side
- effects and there is more variability in kids and adult
- responses to it.
- CaEDTA does seem to preferentially get bone lead and neither are
- particularly effective for brain lead reduction while DMSA
- depends on kidney elimination which is problematic for some. I
- know the initial studies on oral CaEDTA showed increased
- symptoms in the first 24hr exposure which was why BAL was
- added. More recent research still finds them (DMSA, CaEDTA)
- indistinguishable in their overall effectiveness.
- In some folks I have combined both (DMSA and CaEDTA) with a
- seeming reduction in adverse effects (like GI upset or skin
- sensitivity) if either one wasn't tolerated as well alone.
- In many, CaEDTA appears better tolerated and DMSA is considered
- the alternative.

- There is a viable alternative that is evidence-based but vastly
- more gentle. The used of homeopathic plum bum 6c, tid for a
- time. Works well in my practice.
