- "On March 22, 2014 a portion of an unstable hill along the Stillaguamish River collapsed 6.4 km east of Oso, in Washington State. Mud and debris engulfed the rural neighborhood and covered an area of approximately 2.6 square km. It also dammed the river, causing extensive flooding upstream as well as blocking State Route 530, the main route to the town of Darrington. Located in Washington State's Cascades Mountains, Oso relies heavily on the tourist and logging industries. The area experienced up to 200 percent normal rainfall over the 45 days prior to this disaster. As the one-month anniversary and President Barack Obama's visit approaches, the death toll stands at 35 and eleven people are still missing. The President plans to meet with survivors and search crews on April 22. The search crews continue to dig through deep, gelatinous mud and debris, which is 70 feet thick in some places, to search for the missing. "First and foremost our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who lost a loved one and those whose friends and family remain missing as a result of this devastating incident," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters."
