Grey once led a normal life. He had good friends, a loving relationship, and dreams for the future.

In the span of one day, it all came crashing down.

Now his world has been turned into a frightening urban wilderness. On all sides he is surrounded by the ruined tatters of what used to be his city. Everywhere he goes, he is stalked by walking corpses. There is no help coming - no end in sight.

It is against this backdrop that Grey must rebuild his life from scratch. Whether or not he can succeed remains an open question.

Sara has a passion for baseball and her lifelong dedication to the sport has given her both the athleticism and the knack for strategy that surviving in a post-apocalyptic landscape requires. However, in spite of her tomboyish exterior, she is still quite feminine in manner.

When the stakes are high, Sara is capable of great feats of bravery, displaying a nearly boundless resolve to overcome. Nonetheless, she lacks self-confidence, and often suffers bouts of crippling anxiety. Moreover, her usually cheerful mood can sour at the slightest provocation. When this happens, she tends to retreat into herself, shutting everyone out. Occasionally, though, her response is more violent.

Sara has been in love with Grey for as long as she can remember. She considers him to be her soul mate - the one and only man who she could ever think of being with. Though it sometimes seems as if Grey doesn't quite reciprocate this depth of emotion, it is clear that she will always remain committed to him. And she will do anything it takes to protect him from danger.

Anything.

Grey's best friend and closest confidant - they've known each other since childhood. The bond they share runs deep, as though they were real brothers.

What's his name? Even Grey himself has trouble remembering sometimes, referring to him, as everyone else does, only by some variation on "Bro." For his part, Bro never refers to anyone by their given names either, using gently-mocking nicknames or terms of endearment instead.

Bro's joking attitude sometimes causes others to underestimate him. Yet he is more than capable of handling himself around the undead, using skills he has acquired from a lifetime of watching gory horror movies. His encyclopedic knowledge of monsters and post-apocalyptic fiction, combined with his innate cleverness, make him a force to be reckoned with. Though he would gladly lay down his life to protect Grey's if there was no other alternative, he always manages to worm his way out of even the most desperate situations. The man has more lives than a cat - and he doesn't hesitate to brag about it.

Kind-hearted, trusting to the point of gullibility, endlessly generous, and deeply naive, Elly is the worst kind of person to be during the apocalypse.

Orphaned as an infant, Elly made the decision to become a nun when she was only 11. While she is just a novitiate for the time being, she looks forward to the day that she can take her solemn vows and become a full-fledged sister.

Elly has a poor grasp of the world outside the church, but she is not without practical knowledge. Since joining the convent, she has been trained in horticulture and in administering first aid, both of which rank as valuable skills to the dozens of survivors who now seek refuge at the church.

Whereas Naomi organizes the defense of the church and daily forays into town for supplies, Elly oversees the rationing of scarce resources. The two have developed an odd relationship, each depending upon the other in their mutual goal of caring for wayward survivors. Elly looks up to Naomi like an older sister, but wishes Naomi would be a little bit more in tune with her spiritual side - Naomi thinks Elly is an idiot.

Jun is a loner by nature and has been living as a hikkikomori for over a year. In fact, if it weren't for people posting about it on her favorite image boards, she may have remained totally unaware of the horrors developing just outside her bedroom window.

Cripplingly shy and socially awkward, Jun's reclusiveness is not a new development. She has never had an easy time making friends or holding down a job. As a result, she has increasingly turned to the fantasy worlds of anime and video games to fill the void in her life left behind by lack of companionship.

Because of her asocial nature, Jun can often come off as cold or uncaring. She's also a little juvenile - even though she can name every single episode of the anime series <i>Ghost Slide</i>, she has never been to a party or driven a car. Nonetheless, she may turn out to be one of Grey's most valuable assets during his time as a survivor. One thing is for certain, though: her taste is better than yours.

Before the outbreak, Maya was a normal, well-adjusted homemaker. She was a caring mother who worked hard and sacrificed much to provide her son with the kind of childhood that she herself never got to have. Despite working full-time as waitress at the restaurant she owned with her husband, she still found time to be a model soccer mom - never complaining about the burdens of juggling work and home life. Deep down, though, Maya sometimes longed for the spark of excitement that her life had when she was still a young woman.

As with many survivors, Maya's quiet life has been turned on its head. But no matter the situation, Maya retains the love and loyalty of motherhood, and dotes on those she cares about.

Naomi is a no-nonsense woman who has little patience for frivolity of any stripe. She has a practical, almost utilitarian, attitude toward everything she approaches, and doesn't like to be challenged. She also has a keen eye for tactics and organization, always playing many moves ahead of her opponents.

A lapsed Catholic, Naomi can seem jaded or cynical at times. Yet when she discovered a group of survivors living in the church she that used to attend as a young girl, she didn't hesitate to take an active role in defending them. As perhaps the only remaining member of the city's police force, Naomi has assembled a team of civilians to help her in keeping a 24/7 lookout patrolling the church grounds. She also leads regular excursions into town in order to bring back much-needed supplies, at great personal risk.

Though she is often curt or irritable - even mean - underneath this facade is a kind person who wants to do good for others. When push comes to shove, Naomi lives by the principle of altruism, and she is willing to go to enormous lengths to make sure her fellow citizens remain safe in these troubled times.
