Gday CMDR, I used to post this for the new guys when horizons came out, its in desperate need to be updated but it should send you on the right track :)

A few top tips from /u/willyb321

* Never fly without rebuy (5% of your ships total cost)
* Don't buy that fancy new ship till you can outfit it - the default loadout on most ships is much worse than upgraded one
* Community Goals are quite a good way to make a lot of money when starting off, for comparatively less effort
* Do the tutorials **before** pressing play!!
* Be patient, this game needs it!
* Enjoy your time!

As you know this question gets asked a lot, so ill copy and paste useful links to help you get started :)

If you have horizons and choose surface start (horizons sidewinder), you will start at [Asellus Primus](http://elitedangerous.gamepedia.com/Asellus_Primus) This is a good starting system.

If you chose New Commander you will start at [LHS 3447](http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/LHS_3447).

First thing you want to do is get out of (LHS 3447) and never look back.

**Eravate** system right next door has stations  under 200ls away from its star -  Cleave Hub, It currently also one of the busiest areas of space.

~~**Kremainn** system has ringed planets with RES(resource extraction sites) for combat bounty hunting, It also has stations close to its home star.~~  ~~Kremainn is now a player controlled anarchy system~~ Kremainn is a democracy again, you are free to bounty hunt there again :)  (This changes quite a bit)

**LTT 18486** and **LTT 3572** system is close by and has RES(resource extraction sites) for bounty hunting.

Starting out can be hard, Space is big and there is a lot to explore, trade, mine and kill. Elite has a very steep learning curve and there is quite a few guides online to show you the ropes, grab some coffee and have a watch of a few of these while you are playing through the tutorials of the game :)
