  1. [20:05:21] Raidx: In the early-mid 70s, hip hop was formed in The Bronx, NY.
  2. [20:06:34] Raidx: Block parties and such were thrown, and DJs would spin records, people would break dance and "rap" over these records.
  3. [20:08:06] Raidx: In the 80s, hip hop began to develop into many different styles (rock, funk, jazz, electro, etc), and in the late 80s one form of rap began to gain a lot of attention: gangsta rap
  4. [20:10:18] Raidx: Ice-T's 1986 song "6 in the Mornin'" is generally credited to be the first gangsta rap song ever written, with Ice-T rapping about illegal things, the police knocking on his door and other things typical of inner-city lifestyles.
  5. [20:11:51] Arti♡Chu~: Hello :)
  6. [20:11:52] Raidx: N.W.A. became notorious for it's very explicit lyrics in their songs to the point where a lot of their music wasn't played on the radio.
  7. [20:13:54] Raidx: N.W.A was a late 80s hip hop group that consisted of Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella. They released numerous gangsta rap songs and received a bunch of controversy due to the subject of their songs, though N.W.A. is regarded as one of the greatest rap groups in history.
  8. [20:14:29] Raidx: This is the album cover to their debut album, Straight Outta Compton

  11. [20:15:45] Raidx: In the 90s, East Coast hip hop (which is my personally favorite btw) began to spring up and had a completely different style as opposed to West Coast hip hop (N.W.A., Ice-T).
  12. [20:16:35] Raidx: East Coast hip hop generally refers to hip hop by New York rappers, although New Jersey and Pennsylvania (mainy Philadelphia) are sometimes included.
  13. [20:17:31] Raidx: East Coast hip hop and West Coast hip hop have vastly different instrumentals and although some lyrical topics may be similar, the flow and the way it's accomplished are very different.
  14. [20:19:22] Raidx: The instrumentals in East Coast hip hop songs are commonly known as "boom bap" due to the drum patterns used in the songs. The base drum and snare combination make for a "hardcore" feel to the song, unlike most West Coast hip hop where synthesizers and funk beats are generally used.
  15. [20:19:57] Raidx: Here's an example of an East Coast hip hop instrumental: https://youtu.be/f_VqfVrcwq8 (N.Y. State of Mind by Nas)
  16. [20:21:24] Raidx: Vastly different from typical West Coast hip hop instrumentals, as seen in Dr Dre's "Nuthin' But A G Thang" https://youtu.be/PmWOWmjVTvE
  17. [20:22:38] Raidx: East Coast hip hop is generally more lyrical than West Coast, and features intricate rhyming schemes.
  18. [20:23:44] Raidx: Kool G Rap, Nas (my overall favorite rapper), The Notorious B.I.G and GZA are some examples of highly skilled East Coast lyricists.
  19. [20:24:36] Raidx: In the mid 90s, a rivalry was started between East Coast and West Coast rappers; the West Coast-East Coast Rivalry.
  20. [20:26:10] Raidx: Rapper's 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. have collaborated on a couple of songs prior to the rivalry, but some personal issues between the two lead to the whole rivalry between coasts.
  21. [20:29:44] Raidx: 2Pac, a West Coast rapper (although he was born in East Harlem, NY) released a diss track titled "Hit 'Em Up" aimed towards The Notorious B.I.G. and numerous other East Coast rappers in 1996.
  22. [20:30:22] +Tom / Fox Mask: Wait, 2Pac was born in Harlem? TIL
  23. [20:30:50] Raidx: The track is regarded was one of the most brutal diss tracks in hip hop history, and sparked a huge outburst within the community as many rappers were attacked simultaneously.
  24. [20:31:23] Raidx: he was born in harlem but moved to cali in the late 80s
  25. [20:31:33] Arti♡Chu~: Yeah, he went to California
  26. [20:33:25] +Tom / Fox Mask: interesting
  27. [20:33:47] Arti♡Chu~: Mhm
  28. [20:35:10] PikachuSean ^~^: lilo ;w;
  29. [20:35:11] Raidx: A few years prior to "Hit 'Em Up" being released, 2Pac was robbed and shot 5 times in Manhattan, and The Notorious B.I.G. released "Who Shot Ya?", although there's no actual confirmation that this track was directed towards 2Pac, but 2Pac himsefl believed it was aimed at him.
  30. [20:35:22] PikachuSean ^~^: why :c
  31. [20:35:59] PikachuSean ^~^: ah sorry there's a lecture going on, I apologize
  32. [20:36:02] Arti♡Chu~: Who Shot ya omg
  33. [20:36:13] Raidx: Not all rappers partook in the rivalry, however.
  34. [20:36:17] +Deceived: It's Arti♡Chu!
  35. [20:36:20] +Tom / Fox Mask: Damn, that's a harsh title ("Who Shot Ya?")
  36. [20:36:23] +Tom / Fox Mask: savage tbh
  37. [20:36:26] Arti♡Chu~: Deceived shh ltheres a lecture going on
  38. [20:36:35] +Deceived: sorry lad
  39. [20:36:39] Arti♡Chu~: Yeah, 100%
  40. [20:36:51] +Throwing Star: The timing of that track has always been intriguing to me.
  41. [20:37:51] Raidx: Nas's second album "It Was Written" was partly produced by Dr. Dre, and on one of the songs in particular, "Nas is Coming", Nas and Dr. Dre chat about how the East Coast and West Coast rivalry is nonsense and how rappers should instead focus on their careers.
  42. [20:39:00] Raidx: In the midst of the whole conflict, 2Pac was murdered in a drive-by shooting on September 7, 1996 in Las Vegas by an unknown assailant.
  43. [20:39:18] Arti♡Chu~: Yeah
  44. [20:39:23] Arti♡Chu~: He was assassinated
  45. [20:39:37] Raidx: A few months later, The Notorious B.I.G. was murdered in similar manner on March 9, 1997.
  46. [20:39:48] Arti♡Chu~: God!
  47. [20:39:50] +Deceived: It was Diddy
  48. [20:40:32] Raidx: Even to this day the suspects involved in the murders are unknown.
  49. [20:41:08] rarekyle: miller died the same day 2pac did thats tuff
  50. [20:41:33] Raidx: 2Pac and Biggie commonly regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, and their influence on many modern rappers is immense.
  51. [20:41:46] Arti♡Chu~: True true..
  52. [20:42:42] Raidx: i feel like this went from talking about hip hop to like a summary of 2pac and biggie xd
  53. [20:42:56] %Sundar☼18: lol
  54. [20:43:00] Arti♡Chu~: Nah, it's going good!
  55. [20:43:20] %HawaiianGirl: they're probably 2 of the biggest icons of 90s hip hop after all :3
  56. [20:43:37] Raidx: tbh i skipped a good portion of some stuff so idk if i should say it now or what bcus it'd be so out of order LOL
  57. [20:43:45] +Deceived: Say it now
  58. [20:43:50] +Deceived: imo
  59. [20:43:55] +Throwing Star: The differences of East Coast and West Coast were quite nice. I've never actually researched the difference, so it was great to get a perspective on it.
  60. [20:44:31] Arti♡Chu~: Raidx just say it off
  61. [20:45:11] Raidx: Nas's debut album, Illmatic was released in 1994, and was a huge turning point for East Coast hip hop, as at the time West Coast was more mainstream and popular with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and others being figureheads in hip hop.
  62. [20:45:36] Arti♡Chu~: Oh, these rappers are legends
  63. [20:47:01] Raidx: Illmatic showcased Nas's incredible storytelling ability, flow and lyrical content that only a few rappers were known for (Kool G Rap and Rakim for example), and is regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time (and my personal favorite).
  64. [20:48:22] Raidx: Many critically acclaimed producers worked on the album, some being DJ Premier, Large Professor and Pete Rock.
  65. [20:49:18] Raidx: Nas's song "One Love" is a perfect example of Nas's storytelling skill. (https://youtu.be/Qjd7EbUUds8)
  66. [20:53:09] Raidx: 90s hip hop is vastly different from rap from other eras, especially modern rap as lyrics prioritized a lot more than nowadays, and the lyrics themselves being delivered in a more "rap" style unlike many modern songs where the rappers appear to just be singing or even talking.
  67. [20:53:41] Raidx: lyrics were prioritized*
  68. [20:54:24] Raidx: that's the end of my lecture xd
  69. [20:54:32] +Throwing Star: Ayy bless up
  70. [20:54:38] +Throwing Star: Good shit, bro.
  71. [20:54:44] Raidx: for any of yall who genuinely read it, i appreciate it <3
  72. [20:54:55] +Throwing Star: /me thumbsup
  73. [20:54:55] Raidx: thx man :)
  74. [20:54:59] %HawaiianGirl: nice lecture :D super interesting, genuinely
  75. [20:55:02] @Berserking Now: great lecture
  76. [20:55:37] Raidx: :D
