  3. ---
  4. Handout: Cambridge TOEFL p. 343-346, 360-363
  5.
  6. Tuesday and Wednesday: Independent speaking (15-45)
  7. Yesterday: Integrated reading/listening/speaking (30-60)
  8. Today: Integrated listening/speaking (20-60)
  9.
  10. They are the same two types of listening as before (conversation and lecture), but this time there’s no reading.
  11. ---
  12. Other handout p. 33 - Listen to the conversation and take notes.
  13.
  14. How many ways to memorize vocabulary did they talk about?
  15. - Use word roots (“arthro” = “joint”, “pod” = “foot”) and related words (arthritis and tripod)
  16. - Visualization (she has a mental picture of the animals in each group)
  17. - Color-coding (e.g. red for words you don’t know, green for words you know)

  19.

  21. intro - what is the problem? (The woman has trouble memorizing vocabulary for her class.)
  22. - summarize the conversation (Summary of the 4 techniques they discuss)
  23. response - What is your answer to the question? (Which technique(s) do you prefer? Why?)
  24.
  25. What are some reasons someone might pick each of the 4 techniques?
  26. (pick the one that’s easiest for you to justify, whether or not it’s true for you)
  27. ---
  28. The speaking and writing tasks should treat the reader as though they know almost nothing about the topic or about the things you read and heard before doing the task.
  29. ---
  30. p. 34 - Listen to part of a lecture and take notes.
  31.
  32. What are the three types of atmospheric phenomena the lecturer talked about?
  33. 1 halo - refraction from ice crystals are randomly scattered and it looks like a ring around the sun or moon
  34. 2 sun dog - refraction from horizontal ice crystals and it looks like a bright spot on each side of the sun
  35. 3 sun pillar - reflection from horizontal ice crystals and it looks like column of light above the rising or setting sun
  36. ---
  37. Pronunciation is important: reflection and refraction are not the same thing, and in this listening you needed to hear the difference and should probably say both words in your response.
