  1. "I call it 'Flash Storage,'" said Washington.
  2. "Oh? How does it work?" asked Kelsey.
  3. "The smallest that any mechanical computer can be by current manufacturing standards without jamming is the scale of the Minature Analytical Engine created by Dr. Phinser, right?" said Washington. "The same principles used to cluster the original Babbage Engines together can be used on the Miniature variant to yield computing machines just as great as the London Analytical Engine, but with more storage and processing power--"
  4. "Cease your elaboration of the details, get on with the point." said Rightlin.
  5. "The point is that though the newer miniature engines are replacing the older ones, on a spaceship that can only go so far. If we were able to deal with only a basic analytical engine to begin with, they will miniaturize it and add nothing more for the next ships," said Washington.
  6. "I don't see the problem," said Rightlin.
  7. "My colleagues and I have been running into the problem of insufficient storage for years. And this new mechanism is a way of fixing the problem."
  8. "Well what is it?"
  9. "It's Flash Storage."
  10. "But what does it do?"
  11. "Ah yes, of course."
  12.
  13. "The Flash Storage device is a method of connecting to ground-based computer storage and flashing it up to the ship on the heliograph. This would mainly be used by ships which are within 30 light minutes of a space station. The idea is if you want to store tables of information automatically to the computer, you simply send a message to the station or ground base with whatever memory you need to send, and it will write the information into *its* computer."
