» | background: Marin was born in Hanoi, Vietnam to two Vietnamese parents and moved at the age of four. Their family wasn't able to get much when they immigrated to Canada because the only person who was fluent with English was her mother. They struggled to adapt to Quebec and it was difficult for their parents to get jobs because they were immigrants of a foreign country. She was the middle child of three children and when her younger sister was born she too grew up too fast. She had to adapt to situations like going home by herself after school, wash the dishes, fold the laundry, and chores that her parents didn't have time to do. She still loves her parents dearly and never once complained when she realized that her parents are struggling and suffering much more than she is which revealed how hard she must work to help take the load off of her parents' shoulders. Marin grew up mainly around her older brother who was her best friend for most of her life, the two helped raise Maisy and gave each other the comfort that was left by their busy parents. Nonetheless Marin grew up in a very loving family who was hardworking and that gave her the morals that dedication and hard work can go a long way and that helped her put her all in everything she does. Marin first fell in love with music through a small concert her elementary school had where a small, local French-Canadian band played and she was very interested in all the instruments they played — especially the string instruments such as guitar and bass. She didn't hesitate to take up the free lessons from her school and worked hard at her family's Vietnamese restaurant where half of her paycheck went to purchasing an instrument and lessons outside of school. She didn't grow up absolutely isolated from the rest of the world, she did have a handful of friends, but she was always the shy one and only socialized when they urged her to. But most friendships don't last long because they assume she's not putting enough effort or she doesn't care enough which is the opposite. Those who do stay around accept the fact that she's more reserved and doesn't express her feelings well. Marin first got into Korean music through a friend of hers — Adam — which made SNSD's Gee the first ever KPOP song she has ever heard. At the age of 18 she auditioned at YG's Global Audition as a dancer and was accepted before moving out at 19. She was only a trainee at YG for about a few months before she was released and then she auditioned at FM Entertainment where she became a dance trainee, but one of the teachers recognized her potential and requested she become an official trainee as an idol.

She is often depicted as ungrateful by several fans because when they see her they view her as someone who thinks they're better than anyone else and it's harder when she is a triple threat. But in reality she doesn't feel comfortable with so much attention on her and she's trying to adapt to this new environment she was thrown into.
