  1. "So you're a wizard?" Rydel asked over the campfire.
  2. "I don't like to go on about it, but yeah, I'm a wizard." The kobold glanced away from the meat his magic was holding above the fire to Rydel.
  3. "Can you shoot lightning bolts?" Rydel pursued.
  4. "No."
  5. "What about fireballs?" Winston interjected.
  6. "No."
  7. "How about those little balls of magic?" Saturday asked.
  8. "Magic missiles?"
  9. "That's the name."
  10. "No, can't cast those."
  11. "What... can you... do?" Came the croaky voice of the masked figure, sitting a ways from the fire.
  12. "I can drop our meal in the fire if you keep distracting me." He rolled his hand and the cuts turned over in the air.
  13. "Do you have any offensive spells, though?" Winston asked.
  14. "Yeah. I call it Azreal's Finger of Triggering. It makes my gun shoot bullets."
  15. For a few moments, there was only the crackling of the fire.
  16. Rydel broke the near-silence, "It's not exactly a fireball, though."
  17. "This meat look about done to you?" The kobold snarled.
  18. "Sure I guess?" Rydel shrugged.
  19. Krongel got up and took a cut of meat, "Going... for a walk..."
  20. After Krongel's head had dropped behind the crest of a hill, Azreal nibbled the tip of his cut, "That guy unsettles me somethin' fierce."
  21. "He is... peculiar." Saturday took a bite and chewed thoughtfully.
  22. They ate in silence for a short while, and finished too quickly.
  23. "Don't reckon it's worth asking if you can conjure dessert?" Rydel smiled.
  24. "Oddly enough, no. Never did master Ezekiel's Summon Pastry." Azreal took out a pack of cards and began shuffling idly, "Any of y'all play?"
  25. "Name your game, little man." Saturday smiled.
  26. "Sachet Hold 'Em?" The kobold returned the smile.
  27. "Deal me in." Rydel nodded.
  28. "I don't gamble." Winston frowned.
  29. "Live a little." Saturday beamed.
  30. "Hang on, hang on." Azreal set the cards down and waved his hand, "Wait, no I've got this." He snapped his fingers and splayed his fingers at the dirt, "There we go." A small pile of crude red discs formed on the ground under his hand. "We don't have to play for money until you're used to it."
  31. "Well, all right then, I'm game."
  32.
  33. After a while, Azreal and Saturday sat with a pile of chips each and Rydel and Winston made do with a handful.
  34. "So do you guys, you know, like human girls?" Rydel asked over his cards to Winston and Azreal.
  35. Azreal threw a chip into the pot, and spoke monotone, "That you said human rather than elf is evidence of the jackboot of humanity."
  36. "What?" Rydel said.
  37. "What?" Azreal refocused his attention, his voice returning to its usual polished sharpness, "Oh. No, not really. Too flat."
  38. "But kobold girls don't even-"
  39. "Faces. Their faces are flat."
  40. Winston threw down his hand, "I like them, I suppose. I've never thought about it."
  41. "I like ratmaids." Azreal told him. Saturday silently raised. Winston raised an eyebrow to Azreal.
  42. "Okay?"
  43. "Not as a fetish. I just like them as much as I like kobold girls."
  44. "Okay."
  45. "Well, maybe not as much, but-"
  46. "I beg you to stop."
  47. "Okay."
  48. Saturday coughed quietly after quite a long silence.
  49. "Oh," Rydel looked at his hand, "Yeah, I fold."
  50.
  51. "Look who's back." Saturday nodded past Azreal as he took the last of his chips.
  52. "Saw a... dog. In case... you're all still... hungry." Krongel said as the masked figure sat down in a single fluid motion.
  53. "We're not going to eat a dog." Winston said.
  54. "If you say so." Azreal shuffled his cards back together and thrust them back into his belt pouch, "Oh, shit!" He exclaimed.
  55. "What?" Krongel said without emotion.
  56. "You find a scorpion?" Rydel asked.
  57. "No, I forgot," He pulled out a small box, "The take wasn't totally worthless. We got this."
  58. "What's inside?" Saturday asked.
  59. Azreal pulled the box up almost to his snout end and opened it. None of them ever mentioned it to one another, but they all could have sworn they saw a faint golden glow emerging from the box.
  60. "Well?"
