- Hello everyone, I'm SPTspoon and I'm a current speedrunner of KH 2.5 Beginner Any %. I realized there are no comprehensive notes out there for people looking to get into this category so I took it upon myself to write these. I hope this is helpful, but that said I highly encourage watching runs and making your own notes to get acquainted with the game. These notes are meant to be used as a guide for the speedrun, but will not explain everything. These notes can also, for the most part, be applied to the original KH2FM and the PS3 version since the games are very similar. However, there are some PS4 specific strategies and intricacies that are used here. Also, as a side note, this is an Any % run so we don't need to complete all of the worlds to complete the game. We will be skipping 100 Acre Wood, Pride Lands, Atlantica, Olympus Coliseum 2, and Space Paranoids 2. I will start the guide with a few introductory sections, terminology, controls, and general game knowledge. Thanks for reading, I hope this helps, and good luck speedrunning!
- Controls: This game is a Playstation exclusive and thus uses the Dualshock Controller.

- TERMINOLOGY/HUD/GAME KNOWLEDGE: There are a few terms I will be using frequently throughout the guide that I will explain here.
- Scene skip: Fairly self explanatory, this means skipping a cutscene, which we do a lot in this game. This fastest way to skip cutscenes in this game is to hold down on the D-Pad until you are able to Pause, then Press Start and X. This will automatically scroll to the bottom option (Skip Scene) while you press Start so you can immediately press X to select Skip Scene. As a side note, some cutscenes can be skipped while the screen is still black after a load, I will not go into these specifically in these notes.
- HP: Hit points. This is the green meter around Roxas' or Sora's portrait. This represents how much health you have and if it reaches zero you die. Potions and the magic spell Cure will restore your HP. However, using Cure is not usually advised in the speedrun since it depletes your entire MP bar, and we use magic quite a bit.
- MP: Magic points. This is the blue meter under Roxas' or Sora's portrait. All magic spells cost a certain amount of MP and this bar will deplete as you use magic. When depleted it will enter MP charge, where the bar will turn pink and will slowly deplete again. During this time you cannot use magic but once the bar empties again it will return to the original blue state and your MP is restored. Ethers can be used to restore your MP. There are also particular areas/fights in the game that once reached or completed will fully restore Sora's MP.
- Drive Gauge: This is the yellow meter with a number on it next to Sora's portrait. It starts at a maximum of 3 and can be increased throughout the game. This meter is used when activating a drive form or summon, at a minimum cost of 3 drive bars. All summons cost 3 drive bars, Valor and Wisdom forms cost 3, Limit and Master forms cost 4, and Final Form costs 5. This meter restores gradually as Sora deals and takes damage. Additionally, Sora's HP and MP will be completely restored when using a Drive Form. Finally, there are a few places in the run where we will run into a room while in a Drive Form but this room will have both party members removed. Thus, Sora will be automatically reverted and his Drive Gauge restored when entering such a room while in a Drive Form.
- Command Menu: This is the menu with all of Sora's possible actions. It defaults to the right side and from top to bottom it reads: Attack, Magic, Items, Drive. On the left side it reads: Attack, Summon, Party, Limit. Using this menu correctly is the key to success in this game. As a note the menu can be set and selected on particular commands before fights for easy access, I will not go into these during the notes but watching and practicing will help you learn when to pre-set your command menu.
- EXP/XP: Experience points. These are gained by defeating enemies and when enough are gained Sora and his party members will level up. Leveling up causes a characters stats to increase as well as granting new Abilities at certain levels. It is important to note in this game you only gain EXP for defeating normal enemies. Bosses do not grant any EXP but do give permanent stat boosts/specific abilities when defeated.
- AP: Ability Points. These allow Sora, Roxas, and party members to equip Abilities. Every Ability costs a certain amount of AP to equip and in the speedrun we have routed it specifically to have the correct amount of AP for all the Abilities we want throughout the game.
- RC: Reaction Command. This is done by pressing Triangle when the prompt appears, and ranges from simply talking to NPCs, opening Chests, and performing specific battle commands. This is a major feature of this version of KH and is used everywhere throughout the run.
- DM: Desperation Move. This is a boss' or enemy's signature/special attack that usually takes a long time to wind up, has a long animation, and makes the boss invulnerable. These moves waste a lot of time and the strategies we employ will skip DMs as much as possible.
- Revenge Value: This is a hidden value within bosses in this game that causes them to retaliate immediately. The more the boss is hit by attacks the more this value increases, and when it hits the threshold the boss will instantly retaliate and counter any attack. We exploit this value in many situations throughout the run to loop some bosses and to help skip DM.
- Mash: Press buttons as fast as possible. You can use X, O, or Triangle to mash through text in this game. Pressing 2 of the buttons alternating is the fastest way to mash through the tutorial text boxes at the beginning of the game. Only X can be used to make selections however.
- RNG: Random Number Generator. This means there is an element of randomness to the fight/section I am talking about.
- Combo: Sora and Roxas attack in combos, this includes melee and magic. Both start with a 3 hit combo and have a 3 hit combo for most of the run. Late in the run we obtain and equip a Keyblade that gives an extra finisher on the combo so it becomes a 4 hit combo.
- Empty Hit: This simply means hits of a combo without a finisher. (i.e. 2 air empty hits means do 2 air hits without a finisher on the combo)
- Finisher: All combos end with a finisher, all magic counts as a finisher, and finishers deal significantly more damage than regular hits. Bosses can only be killed by a finisher in this game. Therefore, if a boss is at 1 HP and you deal only empty hits to it, it will not die. Usually a good way to finish off a boss at 1 HP is to use magic, since all magic counts as a finisher. If a boss gets away from Sora at very low or 1 HP, just lock on and use Thunder to kill it.
- Air combos vs. Ground combos: Air combos are much faster than ground combos, so in most cases we will want to use air combos. There are some powerful ground combo modifiers however that make ground combos good, especially later in the run.
- Pause Buffer: Pausing the game intentionally to allow it to load. As most people know 2.5 is the slowest version of KH2, it has incredibly long load times and some battle actions take longer to load in this game than other versions. These include drive forms, summons, and limits. In certain fights we will pause intentionally during the drive load to keep the enemy from moving while the drive form loads.
- Death Abuse: Dying intentionally to go faster. There are a few fights in the game where we die intentionally since it's actually faster than finishing the fight and the game still progresses.
- Anti Points/Anti Form: This is a hidden mechanic in the game that results from using Drive Forms too much. Anti Form can only appear when using a Drive Form while in combat and when your Anti Points are high enough. Once your Anti Points are high enough any time you use a Drive Form in combat there is a small change that Anti Form will appear instead of the Drive Form you selected.
- Every time you use a Drive Form you get +1 Anti Point. Once you reach 5 Anti Points there is a 10% chance that Anti Form will activate if you use a drive in combat. Therefore you can use 5 Drive Forms without any fear of Anti Form appearing. Also, using a drive with 0 or 1 party member (Limit Form only) cannot produce Anti Form. However, every time you obtain a new Drive Form your Anti Points are reset to 0. We have routed it so that there is never any chance of Anti Form appearing, so if you follow this guide you don't have to worry about Anti Form!
- MENU: I will be using a few symbols to denote certain things when there is a menu. Also there are certain button shortcuts within menus that help speed up scrolling through menus and equipping abilities. I will go into some of these but not all within the notes. Finally if I list "Menu (Auto)" this means the menu is opened automatically and will default to Party selection. Otherwise menus must be opened with the "Start" button. Note: Menus cannot be opened during combat.
- +: Denotes equipping a certain ability or item. (i.e. +Guard means Equip Guard)
- -: Denotes unequipping a certain ability or item. (i.e. - Guard means unequip Guard)
- Square: Pressing Square in the pause menu will switch between the Items and Abilities menus. (i.e. If I am looking at Sora's items I can press Square to switch immediately to Sora's abilities)
- Triangle: Pressing Triangle in a menu will equip/unequip an Ability, set any consumable item to AT (auto reload), and will change party member actions in the customize menu.
- R2: Will scroll to the next available member in a menu. (i.e. If my party is Sora/Donald/Goofy, I'm in the items menu looking at Sora's items, I can press R2 to immediately switch to Donald's items)
- L2: Will scroll to the previous member in a menu. (i.e. If my party is Sora/Donald/Goofy, I'm in the items menu and looking at Sora's items, I can press L2 to immediately switch to Goofy's items)
- R1: Scrolls to the bottom of the currently visible options on the current menu.
- L1: Scrolls to the top of the currently visible options on the current menu.
- O: Backs out of the current menu to the previous menu.
- CUSTOMIZE: We use a particular customize throughout the game to speed up menuing and use all the magic/items we want to use quickly. I highly recommend learning this customize however, I understand some people's personal preference/muscle memory with customize.
- X: Potion (Once obtained), Reflect (Agrabah 1 through the rest of the run)
- Square: Thunder (Once obtained)
- O: Blizzard (Once obtained), Ether (Before Xigbar through the rest of the run)
- Triangle: Fire (Once obtained), Magnet (Space Paranoids 1 through the rest of the run)
- Note: All runs must be RTA (real time attack) and must be accompanied by a timer. You may not pause your timer at any point in the run or it will not count. All runs must also have video evidence to be verified for the leaderboards.

- From the Main Menu select New Game, Difficulty (Beginner Mode in this case), and your Vibration option (Personal Preference).
- Timer starts when you select "Yes" to confirm your settings. Timer ends when the final blow is dealt to Final Xemnas.

- VALOR FORM
- We just obtained our first Drive Form, Valor! It costs 3 drive bars to use Valor and we will be using it quite a bit for movement and combat in this early part of the run. Valor attacks come out in 2 hits per attack (pressing X once will cause Valor to do 2 hits). Additionally you can activate a combo finisher at any point during a Valor combo by pressing Square. Pressing Square while on the ground and not in the middle of a combo will cause Sora to perform a jumping attack which can be chained into an air combo. It costs 3 drive bars and Goofy must be in the party and alive to activate Valor Form. Valor levels up by hitting enemies a certain number of times.

- We're about to do our first Gummi Mission. In KH2 these are complete auto scrollers, there is no way to speed them up. You want to kill as few enemies as possible or you will unlock additional Gummi Ships which causes extra menu prompts at the end of the mission.

- LIMIT FORM
- We just obtained our third Drive From, Limit Form. It is a callback to the original Kingdom Hearts with powerful Limit attacks. This will be one of the most useful forms for the rest of the run. The most interesting and useful attack in Limit Form is the Ars Arcanum Limit, activated by pressing L1 + Triangle. This attack does not increase an enemy's revenge value except for the finisher, and thus we will be using this on many of the end game bosses for massive damage to finish them off without fear of them retaliating. The most common combo we will be using in Limit Form is: Slide Dash + ground hit + Zantetsuken (this is the standard single target ground combo for Limit Form) + Ars Arcanum + Zantetsuken combo + Ars. It costs 4 drive bars and is the only form that doesn't require party members to activate. Limit Form levels up by performing Limit finishers.

- STITCH
- We just obtained our third summon, Stitch. Stitch is quite useful since he blocks enemy projectiles, can cause enemies to drop HP orbs, and refills your MP periodically. We will mainly be using him for the MP refills which can be RNG, but is awesome when Stitch is constantly refilling your MP.

- We will be using Rumbling Rose for most of the rest of the run. It is a powerful Keyblade with high strength and the ability “Finishing Plus”. We will usually do Magnet + Finishing Leap.
- GUARD BREAK
- Guard Break is a combo modifier finisher that replaces Sora’s normal ground finisher. It is a large overhead swing that deals substantial damage. With Rumbling Rose and Guard Break our normal ground combos now will usually be:

- If he DM’s just avoid his attacks then time the O on each Command slot (DM isn't that bad in this fight)

- Lock on > Summon Peter Pan > Reflect his first few attacks
- RC claymore > Go forward to him then back up
- RC attack him to knock him out of berserk
- Quick run up to him > Reflect > Slide dash + Ground combo + Guard break + Finishing leap + Aerial Spiral
- Ground combo + Guard break > Go near a wall > Wait for his retaliation
- Reflect + wait + Reflect + Slide Dash + Guard Break + Finishing Leap + Aerial Spiral
- Slide Dash + Guard Break ground combo
- Repeat last 2 steps until his Berserk is nearly full
- Spam Aerial Spiral + empty air hits with Peter Pan
- When he's low enough (~0.4 bars) use full Horizontal Slash air combo to finish

- Duck Flare + Air combos on Core > Recharge to 3 Drive > Valor

- ARMORED XEMNAS 1
- Both Armored Xemnas fights are fairly reactionary so it's hard to pin down a particular strat that works every time on these. Generally, you want to Reflect when he swings his sword and 2 staggered Reflects when he uses his shield. You mix in ground combos between these Reflects. That said I've done my best to write down a strat that will work for each fight.
- Slide dash + Guard Break combo + Reflect
- Guard Break combo + Reflect > Ground hits + Reflect
- Guard Break Combo x2 > Reflect x2 + Guard Break Combo
- Reflect + Ground combo x2
- Ground combo > Reflect x3 + Ground finisher
- When he's at about 1.5 bars can use Duck Flare + Megaduck Flare + Ground combos and he should die
- Valor strat: Full ground combo with 2 finishers > Revert
- Reflect sword swing and go into ground combos
- Reflect + Thunder + Reflect + Guard Break when he does the shield
- Continue ground combos + Reflect > Duck Flare + Megaduck Flare + Ground combos when at 1.5 bars
- Scene skip
- DRAGON XEMNAS
- Section 1: Mash Square for lasers and use O to absorb attacks > Megalaser when charged
- Section 2: Mash Square + X to damage engine and knock enemies into it, O to absorb attacks > Don’t use Megalaser
- Section 3: Megalaser instantly > Use Square to finish and absorb with O (hopefully charge Megalaser again)
- Section 4: Megalaser instantly again if charged > Finish with Square + X and absorb with O to charge Megalaser
- Section 5: Megalaser once charged > Finish with Square + X
- Scene skip
- ARMORED XEMNAS 2
- This one is a little more consistent than Armor 1 but is still reactionary.
- Run forward > Reflect + Slide Dash + Guard Break + Ground Finisher
- Full Guard Break Ground Combo
- Reflect > Full Ground combo
- Ground hits + Reflect > Knocked away
- Fall + fly down and left to get to first building > RC building x2
- Aerial Dodge immediately after RC > Fly up and left to fall down to Xemnas
- Run forward > Reflect + Slide Dash + Guard Break + Ground Finisher
- Full Guard Break Ground Combo > Reflect > Full ground combo > Knocked away
- Fall down for a bit > Fly down and left to avoid lasers and get building again
- RC x2 > Aerial Dodge > Fly up and left to fall down back to Xemnas
- Reflect + Slide Dash + Full Guard Break Ground Combo
- Reflect x2 on his shield
- Ether before running out of MP
- Ground combo > Reflect
- Scene skip
- FINAL XEMNAS
- Mash L1+X to Reflect immediately > Session (Lock on during Session for most damage)
- X > Trinagle > X > Triangle > Triangle during Session, Don't use Finisher
- Ether x2 and Stop Limit
- (Reflect + Ground and air combos) Repeat until he is at around 4 bars
- Limit Form > Ars > 2 empty hits > Ars > Zantesuken Combo > Elixer
- Jump over first lasers
- Reflect lasers for damage
- When Xemnas fully spawns Lock On + Slide Dash + Reflect + Guard Break
- Attacking clone does no damage.
- Ether when necessary
- If he does DM where he will grab Sora, Reflect to stop the attack and avoid playing as Riku
- If he throws you either spam RC and pray or just use Session
- Repeat until he is at about 0.7 bars and he will do Laser Dome
- 1:30 once cutscene/laser dome starts before final hit and kill.
- Mash X and Triangle through Laser Dome
- Sit back and watch Xemnas get rekt
- After white loading screen > Lock On + Thunder
- FINISH!
