  1. I have spent the large majority of my day researching the djmax/SHIHYUN drama and issues surrounding it. As a preface, I do not live in Korea or know Korean and this has been compiled with all of the resources I have available. If anyone has conflicting or more extensive information, please bring it to my attention. I'm going to start with a historical background:
  2.
  3. In 2015, Megalia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalia) was formed. This was an online forum for feminists that was seen as radical and according to some, targeted men just as men targeted women in the country. There are numerous articles and reddit posts and *chan threads on Megalia, but the fact is some (probably a very small amount) of these feminists were radical or possibly even extremist feminists. Here (https://www.google.com/…/an-epic-battle-between-femini…/amp/) is a good primer on the whole issue from 2016. The website branched off and was taken down some time ago. Feminists are still targeted and seen as Megalia sympathizers or members today. There is a lot of discourse on Megalia and various events like the support shirt (https://www.reddit.com/…/com…/4ts7mn/korean_gamergate_is_on/) available, but reading between the lines on all of them seems to lead to the fact that women face major prejudices and actual physical danger in Korea (see the police investigation and following counter accusation in the short reddit post) while men experience little of it and are going through pressure to equalize the gender gap. This makes them scared of losing power instead of happy that they are on more equal ground. Feminism is now in the eyes of the public as a goal or issue thanks to Megalia, and it is evolving as time goes on.

  5. Flash forward to March 2018. Artist SHIHYUN who among other assets created the characters and mv for Glory Day and Black Cat, was essentially witch hunted on ruliweb (http://m.ruliweb.com/community/board/300143/read/37322821) for feminist retweets. Today, April 25th 2018, DJMAX Official twitter (https://twitter.com/DJMAX_global/status/989083023831392256…) stated through the linked tweet and replies that the assets will be replaced and the artist is no longer being worked with. We do not have an official reason why this happened, but there are three possibilities:
  6. 1. Neowiz, like many other korean companies, is ridding itself of the Megalia image by cutting ties with the artist
  7. 2. Death threats were sent to Neowiz to comply with reason 1 and they did not find it safe to take the risk
  8. 3. Something else happened entirely, which seems unlikely based on the replies to the tweets
  9.
  10. I'm going to go over each of the accounts and the tweets I found from them, in some cases including the original tweets that were retweeted by SHIHYUN.
  11.
  12. @ohmy_feminism - Posts articles and details about feminist struggles and women who overcame them. Didn't fact-check but pretty darn harmless after going through ~30 tweets. No ties to Megalia/radical feminism as far as google could take me.
  13.
  14. @rainygirl_ - Generally focuses on game industry struggles and wins for feminists. No radical feminist tweets that I saw, no ties to Megalia or radical feminism.
  15.
  16. @fujo_taku - Not a lot of information. (Assumed) non-problematic BL artist whose comic appears to have been taken down, defunded, or deserialized, presumably for anti-feminist reasons. No feminist tweets at all from what I could tell. Didn't bother googling besides making sure this wasn't the Killing and Stalking writer/artist.
  17.
  18. @SUKJA_1114 - Lots of feminist tweets and scattered tweets worried about power in the hands of men. Mostly posi stuff, seems to have a boyfriend from one of their tweets, also possibly supportive of non-cisgendered people based on art. Google pulled up some discourse on Megalia referring to Soccer Spirits art but this was 6 days ago and I could find nothing older tying them to the movement pre-website takedown, so likely a kneejerk ruse from ppl scared of feminism. By far the edgiest person retweeted but nothing remotely problematic or violent/demeaning against men in general. Just your standard outspoken feminist with no ill will from what I can tell.
  19.
  20. @minampeace46 - a mother who occasionally posts stuff about feminism that is mostly posi, but found one tweet condemning a man who (probably rightfully) recently said "it's dangerous to be a man today". This is similar to the MRA movement in that men really have no idea what women go through and claim to be victims on an equal level. Google turned up no links to megalia but active participation in korean feminist movement on twitter. Still nothing remotely violent or dangerous and almost all positive.
  21.
  22. @isilmoon - Despite the name, nothing problematic and a mere handful of feminist tweets among over 100,000. Appears to be male. Google brought up an additional tweet about feminism tweeted by another account. No links to Megalia or ISIL (lmao).

  24. As it stands, I assume the DJMAX team or deciding officials chose to take their action against SHIHYUN and hurt all female players due to the idea that there may be some connection to radical feminism. Until I hear otherwise I am no longer supporting, promoting, or even playing DJMAX Respect out of respect for SHIHYUN, the accounts in question, and women in general.
