  29. I'm currently writing in the style of Meursault. I kind of like that.
  30. infspire
  31. When thinking about the nature of Meursault I oscillate at least points of view: 1) he's a psycopath -- simple, and 2) he is expressing a high degree of Buddhist equanimity.
  32. infspire
  33. Then I wonder, "Is there any difference between the two?"
  34. infspire
  35. Maybe to have Buddhist equanimity instead of psychopathy you have to have once had the ability to participate in the drama and social narratives that humans fill their lives with, and then transcend that.
  36. infspire
  37. But if you just skip to the end you're a psychopath.
  38. infspire
  39. But, it feels kind of unfair to penalize those that do the job more efficiently.
  40. infspire
  41. Oh, I also went through Oedipus Tyrannus, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone in the last few days.
  42. infspire
  43. It's kind of nice to make progress through the most famous works of literature. Whenever I complete one I switch its color from red to green in my spreadsheet and that feels good.
  44. infspire
  45. I thought the analysis of the meaning the polis provides to man as a justification of state power in Antigone to be interesting.
  46. infspire
  47. Also, the recognition that the state extends and subsume much of the meaning and order that is originally in family, often while venerating familial relationships as the most sacred -- presumably to gain the trust of the citizens -- while supplanting it to be noteworthy.

  49. It also caused me to reflect on the human proclivity to organize their social relationships, in part, by using patterns they believe they observe in nature 'outside' of man, e.g. the king of the jungle in the lion and the 'alpha wolf' in wolf groups.
  50. infspire
  51. I remember that video I saw a few weeks ago that reviewed a scientific paper showing there are no alpha wolves and that wolf packs are just extended families. The dominant wolves are just the oldest mom and dad and everybody else are their immediate descendants.
  52. infspire
  53. Which is to say, that humans have very little precedent to leverage for non-familial social organizations the kind we encounter in almost all of our contacts with humans in the workplace, on IRC, or in our daily tasks.
  54. infspire
  55. We feel lonely and unsure of how to sort ourselves, and so we make up stories about our psychological patterns being present 'out there'.
