Personality:

When asked to describe Yanyu, any close friend of his will probably start off with "Oh man, how do I describe Yanyu..." He's very... let's say quirky. The word "random" pretty much sums up his personality. He is known to go off and do the weirdest things that often have no purpose whatsoever. One time when all the members woke up in the morning, no one could find Yanyu. After hours of searching, they figured out that he had managed to get himself trapped inside the dumpster outside their dorms. To this day no one knows why he even got in there in the first place.

He will often steal food from the other members. If they notice him doing it and demand their food back, he'll lick the food and say "You still want it now?" just to piss them off. He's known to sneak into the other member's rooms at night and "borrow" small things from them, which are usually never returned. The members have learned to hide their iPhones at night.

He tends to get stuck in places a lot, as he goes off to do random things without letting any of the members know where he's going or why. Once, when the group was about to do a recording session, he wandered off into another hallway, and next thing the group knew they were all receiving frantic text messages on the group chat that he was locked in some sort of closet and he didn't know where. And let's not even talk about the time that the members found him stuck in a stall in the women's restroom.

He can be very bipolar sometimes, depending on the situation. He hates taking showers, because he constantly gets shampoo in his eyes which has led to a fear of soaps/shampoo near his face. (He's very sensitive to pain). Yet when he's in the shower, he never wants to get out because he dislikes the coldness that you feel after getting out.

He hates showing negative emotions to the other members, so if he feels the need to cry he will run off into another room with no explanation. If he cannot run into another room, he will hide his face in his shirt and sit there sniffling. When annoyed, rather than simply asking the annoyance/annoyer to stop, he will set out for revenge. The members will never stop retelling the story of how he set all of the maknae's underwear on fire after the maknae had made him really angry. All of it.

Due to his childish and irresponsible nature, people often make the mistake of thinking that he can't be serious, and that he's clumsy and untrustworthy. However, in actuality, Yanyu will keep others' secrets better than his own. He has tiny hands (which the members tease him about, but he doesn't dislike. He actually thinks they're helpful), and he is very trustworthy when it comes to doing things with care such as moving expensive/fragile objects, and he's great at sewing.

People often find him weird at first, but when you get to know him his strange quirks grow on you and you can't help but love him. The other members have lots of strange stories about him, but their favorites include: The time Yanyu tried to bribe their manager with twenty five cents that he stole from a tip jar, when one of the members woke up in the middle of the night to see Yanyu standing next to his bed, reciting the American Pledge of Allegiance, and when Yanyu tamed a squirrel with bread and smuggled it into the dorm (he named it Walnut).



Background Story:

It all started when a Chinese woman and a Korean man met at the airport in San Francisco, California, USA. The two soon fell in love, and both being fresh out of college, they decided to buy a house together. After two years, they got married, and decided to start their own business. They opened a small thrift store downtown, but did not have enough money to pay for both their house and the store building. They sold their house and moved into the apartment above the thrift store.

Six years and nine months later, the woman gave birth to a smiling baby. The couple had expected their baby to be a girl, and had already decided on the female name Yanyu, meaning Beijing Jade. Upon realizing the baby's actual gender, the couple decided to keep the name, as they believed their baby was as beautiful as any female could hope to be.

Yanyu grew up in that small apartment above the thrift store. From a young age, he would help his parents run errands and help around their shop. At the age of nine, he was allowed to man the cash register, and he learned to deal with different kinds of people. He met lots of people with different personalities over the years, and he unknowingly picked up on different aspects of them. He learned about different cultures and developed many interests. He was an obedient and shy child, never doing anything too outrageous, and being the complete opposite of how he would be in a few years.

Soon after Yanyu's tenth birthday, his life took a drastic change. His mother announced that she was pregnant, and the excited family started preparing for another child. Yanyu was especially excited to have a younger sibling, and he and his father often discussed what to name the baby. After five months, they had finally decided on a name. One that would never be used.

At five months, Yanyu's mother had a miscarriage. It broke Yanyu's heart when he found out he would not have a younger sibling after all. The family had also just found out that the baby was a girl. Yanyu's father, however, was struck the worst. Ever since a young age he had always wanted a daughter, and his wife's miscarriage impacted him badly. Tension developed between the couple, building up until eventually Yanyu's father decided it would be best for him to leave the family. The couple agreed that the father could have Yanyu, and at age eleven Yanyu was brought to Korea.

He struggled to learn Korean at first, growing up as a native English speaker, but his father's relatives in Korea gladly helped teach him the language. Yanyu lived with his dad in a relative's house. He often found himself missing his mother, and one day asked if he could visit her. His father immediately denied Yanyu's request, but did not explain to Yanyu why. Confused, Yanyu began to question his father's actions, leading him to develop an independence he'd never had before.

By the time he was fourteen, he had become very distant from his father, and made the biggest decision of his life- he ran away from home. He made friends with the homeless kids, and they took him in. He developed a habit of stealing things, and developed a rather strange personality. He got used to not explaining his decisions to anyone, for safety reasons, which led to his current habit of not telling anyone where he is going.

A while after he ran away, he attended a small public party, as some of his friends from the streets invited him, and was immediately drawn to the karaoke booth. He and a couple of friends sang a song, to which people requested that Yanyu should sing another one. Little did they know that a person with connections to Jellyfish Entertainment had attended the party, and they later offered Yanyu the chance to audition.

-He is a sleepwalker, and even talks in his sleep sometimes. The other members often wake up to see him wandering around the dorms, chanting random things, and think he's just being strange. In reality he's unconscious, and has no idea the next morning that he threw the microwave out the window when he was sleeping. He refuses to believe anything that the members say he does during the night (it's all true though), as he thinks that they are just trying to prank him.

-He honestly does not think that he is attractive. He thinks that the other members look much better than him, and will say as such. However, he doesn't give a flying f*ck about it, and isn't jealous of their looks.

-He doesn't discuss his family or his past with his fellow members. He believes that he never will (though he might sometime later on). He knows that his personality completely changed from when he was little compared to now, as he was a very calm and shy kid, and now he is weird, rambunctious, and a runaway.

-None of the members know he is American, as he focused as much as he could on speaking Korean without an accent. Though the members often wonder how someone seemingly so carefree and irresponsible can be so good at speaking English

-He secretly believes that if he becomes famous, that one day he will be able to find and reunite with his mother again. He also wants to reconcile with his father. He often gets gloomy when other members talk about their parents. He hopes that his mother will recognize him and come find him

-He brings loads of money with him everywhere, not to buy things, but so he can hand a wad of cash to every homeless person he comes upon. He also gives them a mint or two.

-He has a collection of scented candles- a HUGE collection. He asks for candles as gifts. Last time he counted he had fifty seven, and he buys them on a regular basis. Not to mention that every single one has a different scent. Thank god he isn't burning the candles or else the dorm would be suffocating to walk in. He just... sniffs them sometimes.

-The members' have to keep the dorm locked at night because one time Yanyu sleepwalked out the door, and the next day they found him passed out in the middle of the street. They're just wondering how he managed to not get hit by any cars

-He binge watches Bill Nye the Science Guy, and sometimes runs around changing BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY. The other members question his sanity sometimes. He did this once in the middle of the night.

-A nickname of Yanyu's is Kitten, from his stage name NYU. The sound "Nyu/Nya"is basically the Japanese equivalent to the sound effect for "Meow" in English. In Japan cats say nyu. Therefore NYU is a Kitten.

-He has a jade necklace that he wears everywhere under his shirt. He's had it since he was four- he vaguely remembers taking it from a shelf in his childhood thrift shop, and not realizing he still had it until he packed to move to Korea. It has a small jade hummingbird on it.

-He often makes up his own words, and uses strange ones that he's heard from people. (He says that he's confuzzled when he's confused. He calls canines puppers and doggos. He yells out random memes. You know how when EXO's Sehun is happy he makes the Yehet noise? When really happy, Yanyu makes the sound "Chuuuya!")

Suggested plots/scenes:

-The members somehow manage to lose Yanyu before an interview, and they find him in some sort of extremely strange situation that cannot be explained even by him (example: He's hanging upside down from an exit sign in another section of the building, completely covered in packing peanuts)

-At their debut concert he thinks he sees his mother in the crowd and starts flipping out, but can't explain to the members what exactly is happening to him

-A member sees him sleepwalking past their room at night, and they decide to follow him as they are concerned. They realize that they forgot to lock the dorm, and he exits. Yanyu almost gets into some sort of dangerous situation, but the member who followed him saves him.

-The members (ones who don't speak English) are having trouble or are in some sort of situation where English is needed. Yanyu is forced to translate for them, and this is the first time that the others are aware that he can speak English, as he's never told them.
