- A main character in the story, Gank Gule is probably the most developed, with the longest backstory partly due to his age. Gank grew up on Foundry, in the heart of Conglomerate space. His family was made up of mostly miners, both his parents being migrant workers from other systems. As he grew up, he learned to almost worship the Conglomerate state, and he wished to join the navy when he grew older. He had a friend named Appius, who will become important later in his story. When he became of age, the war against the Free World Coalition had just begun, and a draft was instituted. He wasn’t drafted, but he enlisted into the military voluntarily.
- Gank was present during the invasion of Alpha Centrari B, the capital of the Centrari Union, the most powerful state of the Free Worlds Coalition. It is also during these battles that at some point, Gank’s mind turned sour as he began to crave violence. His actions separated himself from those around him, and he became widely disliked. He also became somewhat of a madman, known to keep the ears of those he killed on a necklace he made. He killed as many people as he could, even if they had nothing to do with the fighting.
- When the Conglomerate armies were ordered to retreat from Alpha Centrari, Gank refused, and instead he killed his commanding officer. In the following years, Gank began to exist as a pirate and led a small band of brigands to pilage vessels throughout Conglomerate space. He killed many innocent people and became the most widley known criminal in modern times. Twenty years pass, and Gank’s army continues to grow.
- Then, at some point, Gank changed. For some reason, he began to feel guilty for his actions. He continued to outwardly portray himself as a tough pirate warlord, but secretly he was beginning to despise himself and what he had become. He spent less time with his crew, and more time alone.
- Then, the Karawam ships arrived. The Karawam, a powerful militaristic species, quickly enslaved all the humans and other races present in known space. The Conglomerate government, aiming to protect their royal family, tried to send them away on a ship. Gank’s pirate army intercepted the ship, and the Karawam offered a high bounty to whoever killed the royal family and took them the royal twin princesses alive, so Gank’s army boarded and slaughtered their personal guard. However, Gank, feeling a need for reconciliation, discovers baby Evelia in one of the rooms, and instead of imprisoning her on his ship, he secretly arranges for his old friend Appius to pick her up, and he takes her to a hidden colony of monks on Farsaal, far away from the Karawam’s gaze, where she is raised by the monks. At the same time, Gank realizes he is done with the pirate life, and he settles down in a small colony of refugees in the ruins of Henrietta Station, which crashed into the planet after the Karawam shot it down.
- Gank lives on the station for several years, as Evelia grows up. For some reason, he feels responsible for protecting the child, and he feels that by protecting her he can make up for all the crimes he committed in his lifetime.
- As Evelia grows up in the colony, which is doing all it can to stay hidden from the Karawam, she has a normal childhood. She is raised in a very Catholic environment, but she isn’t a fan of religion and is very rebellious against her caretakers. However, it all ends very suddenly when the Karawam discover the monestary, and send a party to invade. Worship of any gods besides the ones of the Karawam religion was against the new order of things in their mind, so they slaughtered all of Evelia’s childhood friends. When the tragedy occurred, Gank Gule swooped in and saved Evelia from the mess. Evelia didn’t know who gank was now, and she was very confused at what was going on. And this is where the story begins.
