+cabadejo __ To be convinced of something means to have *no doubt* about it. He cannot be without doubt *on this* issue. There are reasons to doubt that the Earth is flat and not just because it lacks sufficient proof.



Of course - there can be some things where a person has convinced himself of a lie being the truth [and not just merely mistaken] *but the shape of the Earth is not one of those things*.



This is not some random topic which has no meaning nor is it without cultural pressure. This is not something where a person can be detached from the outcome. This is something that was planted into our heads via trust and false reasons as children and 99.99999% of the population have no problem asserting that the Earth is a ball.



To say otherwise is to *really* go against the grain. It is a little bit like standing in a crowd while it is raining and shouting "it is not raining!"



My point is - this issue is not like "most other things" and so can't be so easily dismissed as someone who has "convinced himself".



Put it this way:

And so if he can doubt one *but not also the other* _then he is not being honest_.



It's as simple as that.



Anyone can claim they believe X or Y - but in this instance that commitment *needs to be tested* before it can be accepted (or dismissed) as genuine.



(The idea of a liar being convinced of his own lies is a bit of a cliché in my view though for some/many things it is of course possible.)
