- Hey everyone,
- Some of you might remember me which is cool I guess, but I’m probably an unfamiliar face to most of you in this group. I used to play Pokemon from 2011-2018, and have traveled the world and competed at the highest level. During my time playing, I got to meet some amazing people, many of whom I still talk to today even after I have finished playing. However, there is one person who I had the displeasure of meeting during my playing career. That person is Jimmy Pendarvis. Most of you probably know him as the guy who has won 4 Regionals this year, but I, and many others, know him as a cheater and a complete and utter piece of garbage. After seeing him weasel his way into the spotlight into the community, I figured someone had to take a stand and reveal to the community what kind of person you guys are placing on a pedestal. Today, I’m here to tell you the truth about Jimmy Pendarvis. I’ll be going over a few instances of cheating that I know about (I am positive there are many more that I do not know about or cannot talk about) as well as many of the horrible things Jimmy has done to members of this community. Everything here besides the first story I’ll be sharing can be corroborated by multiple people; the first story is one told to me in person and I will go to my grave knowing that this is exactly what was told to me, regardless of whether or not others believe me. Hopefully after this post, many of you will realize that he is not someone you should be looking up to, nor is he someone you want around in the Pokemon community.
- When talking about Jimmy, I guess the best place to start would be in the winter of 2016/2017. My buddy who used to play Pokemon and now plays Hearthstone came to New York City for a tournament but also to hang out with friends. While he was here, he introduced me to a few other professional Hearthstone players. When they found out that I was a pro Pokemon player, the conversation immediately shifted to Jimmy Pendarvis. You see, Jimmy tried to be a professional Hearthstone player for a few years, and even got my friend to get him a sponsorship (I’ll go more into this in a bit). I guess he thought that when he switched games, he was completely done with Pokemon, because he decided to brag to these people about how he and Igor Costa used to cheat all the time in Pokemon and how easy it was. Now, when I heard this I was shocked. I had never heard anything about Igor (it later turned out to be true of course), and while I had heard some suspect things about Jimmy, this was the first concrete story I had gotten.
- You may think I’m done with this section of the story, but I promise you, this is not all the Hearthstone players told me. As I said before, my buddy helped secure Jimmy a sponsorship when he switched games, even though he had no major tournament finishes nor social media presence. How did Jimmy repay him for this favor? Well, let me tell you. At a tournament they were both attending, Jimmy got very inebriated and decided it would be a good idea to bring two girls who were also not sober in their own right back to my friend’s hotel room, even though he was not staying there, nor was he in the room (my guess is as good as yours as to how he had a hotel key). I guess he thought he was going to get laid, I’m not really sure what his line of thinking was here. Of course, these two girls had a bad reaction to what made them not sober and started freaking out in my friend’s hotel room. Security was called and Jimmy and his two lady friends were kicked out of the room for noise violations. Unfortunately for my friend, he was kicked out of his hotel too even though he was not in the room at the time nor remotely involved with the situation. Did Jimmy ever say sorry to my friend for doing this to him? Did he buy him a new hotel room as compensation for getting him kicked out of his? Absolutely not. This is how he treats people who are kind to him; this is a repetitive theme throughout the entire post. I have another story about him screwing over people in the Hearthstone community, but considering that it’s a different game, I’ll hold off on sharing it unless it is deemed absolutely necessary.
- After hearing these stories from the Hearthstone players, I decided to completely distance myself from Jimmy, as I knew nothing good would come from associating with him. However, some of my friends continued to associate with him, even after I warned them to steer clear. This had serious ramifications for two of my friends. One of them continued to be friends with him until recently, but ever since they got into a disagreement, my friend does not feel safe being around the Pokemon community. They feel they have been used for years, but because of Jimmy’s sphere of influence, they are scared to come out and tell the truth out of fear of losing mutual friends. Another one of my friends all of a sudden got blackballed from their local community. While we were never able to prove Jimmy was blackballing them, all of the people who stopped talking to my friend (coincidentally) were also close with Jimmy.
- Now let’s talk about some of Jimmy’s shady plays. Unfortunately, the only confirmed acts of cheating I know of about Jimmy all occurred off-camera which I cannot talk about without exposing my source’s identities, but there is one act that happened on camera that I want to talk about. In top 4 of Oregon Regionals this past year, Jimmy played Joe Sanchez. In game 2 of the match, Jimmy knocks out Joe’s Wobbuffet. This occurs at about 1:04:30. Joe mistakenly places his Wobbuffet on his bench instead of discarding it. Now at this point, you might wonder how anything going on is cheating. Well, as a former top player, I can promise you that something like this would not go unnoticed, especially for how long it goes on. This can be confirmed by Travis Nunlist, another top player who was commentating this game, immediately noticing the Wobbuffet not going to the discard as it should have been. The only way it might have gone unnoticed is if there was already another Wobbuffet on Joe’s bench, but as as you can see from the video, this was the only Wobbuffet in play. After Joe plays out his turn, Jimmy Guzma’s out Joe’s Wobbuffet and locks it in the active with Quaking Punch. The next turn, Jimmy VS Seekers for N. Only after Joe’s cards are shuffled into the deck does Jimmy finally say something about the Wobbuffet. Since Joe had shuffled his hand into his deck, the gamestate is irreparable, and thus it is a double game loss, giving Jimmy the win. This is extremely important because if you know the matchup and you see the board state, you know Joe has a very good chance of forcing a game 3 in this series. However, by waiting to call the judge until the penalty was as severe as it could be, he took advantage of the situation and used it to eventually win this Regional. The vod can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zdu_kAUDRvU
- The next instance of foul play I’d like to talk about actually occurred recently at Toronto Regionals. During one of his rounds (I’m not going to tag anyone else in this post both to protect people’s privacy who have told me some of these stories anonymously and also so they don’t get hundreds of notifications, but some of you will probably know who I’m talking about anyways), Jimmy played this unnamed opponent. Jimmy wins game 1 and then decides to start coaching his friend in the game next to his (not cheating, but still extremely disrespectful to his opponent and gives you a look at his character; he’s basically saying I can win beat you while playing two games at once). At the end of game 2, Jimmy needs Guzma and DCE in order to win. Jimmy flashes VS Seeker and announces Guzma for game. His opponent asks if he has the DCE as well. After hearing this, Jimmy got incredibly flush in the face and says no and plays out his turn, where he eventually whiffs the DCE. His opponent wins and forces a game 3, where they have very little time left. After his opponent revealed an important tech in game 2, Jimmy realizes that he is likely to lose, and thus starts to time stall. He does this by playing an insignificant Order Pad and launching a die high into the air so that it falls on the floor and Jimmy has to go get it. This happened twice. Now, many of you might not think of either of these things at Toronto as cheating, but I think they highlight Jimmy’s lack of character and show that all of the other instances of cheating that I do not have video proof of are true.
- I have four more stories I wish I could share with you all (2 of which involve cheating, and one of which would make Brad Curcio abusing the dog look humane), but unfortunately the people who have told me these stories have asked me not to share them because they will expose who they are. If, after this post comes out and my friends gain courage and allow me to post these other stories, I will add them to this post. While I wish I could share these stories with you, I think that my friends are so scared of Jimmy’s wrath for revealing the truth about him speaks volumes as to what kind of person Jimmy is. He is a terrible, controlling, manipulative person who will use and abuse people until they serve no purpose to him anymore.
- The final thing I would like to address in this post is my motivation for making this post. Some of you rightfully might wonder why someone who has quit Pokemon cares so much about the Pokemon community. While I personally have no stake in the outcome of this situation, I do still have a lot of friends who play this game competitively. I care for my friends very much, and I do not want to see someone as vile as Jimmy have a large influence in the community they are still a part of. They deserve better, and to be honest so does the entire community. I also very much dislike Jimmy due to what he has done to my friends, so I will admit that has played a part in me wanting to expose his actions.
- Thanks for reading my post. I know some of you do not like me, but I hope that your dislike of me does not cloud your judgement when reading this post. I also hope that my post gives other people the confidence to speak out against Jimmy and expose more of the terrible things he has done to people in the community. I know there are tons of other stories about him out there that people are too afraid to talk about. I hope by being the one to lead the charge, others will gain the courage to follow in my footsteps and come out and speak up about him. Finally, I hope you take notice of the people who come to Jimmy’s defense: watch these people like hawks. Hopefully, this post brings about some change in who players choose to look up to, and that this will be a turning point in the community where cheaters and scumbags are not elevated to prominent positions.
