58. An idyllic wildlife cruise disintegrates into terror when a party of tourists are stalked by a massive man-eating crocodile. Pete McKell, a cynical American travel writer, joins a disparate group of holiday-makers on a river cruise through the waters of Kakadu National Park. Initially Pete clashes with their tour captain, Kate, a feisty young woman who assumes he is just another 'city-slicker' in search of a quick thrill. After an uneventful day cruising the river, Kate is reluctantly persuaded to steer their boat into unexplored territory. They discover a secluded lake but terror strikes when their craft receives a powerful blow from beneath the murky depths and begins to sink. With little choice, she beaches the vessel on the closest dry land -a tiny mud island. With a rising tide and only half an hour of daylight left, fear grips the group as they realize they are trapped in the lair of a 'rogue' crocodile, governed only by its need to hunt and kill. Begrudgingly, Pete and Kate join forces to keep hysteria at bay and in the process start to see beyond their initial impressions. Their first attempt to escape fails, but then Pete has an idea - they must trap the crocodile to enable the group to flee to the other side of the island whilst Kate swims for help. Pete volunteers to stand guard, but without warning, the beast breaks free and targets Kate who fails to resurface. As darkness descends and the muddy waters rise, a terrifying struggle ensues with only one probable outcome death.
 59. An American journalist on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile while trapped on a rapidly flooding mud island.
 60. Talking to a fellow IMDber about what they have been watching in the run up to Halloween,I got told about the Ozploitation flick Next of Kin.Having Ozploitation (and having enjoyed the 80's Aussie crocodile movie Dark Ages) on the mind,I was happy to find out that the BBC was airing a "modern" Ozploitation title, which led to me getting snappy.

The plot:

Finding nothing exciting to write about for his job as a travel journalist, Pete McKell decides to pass the time by joining some tourists on a crocodile watching river cruise. Completing the tour, tour guide Kate Ryan starts turning the boat back.As they turn one of the tourist spots a flare in the air. Riding down the river to rescue the distressed person,Ryan,McKell and the other tourists soon get a bite of the biggest crocodile in the country.

View on the film:

Whilst their characters are not given that much emotional depth, (although if a monster croc was trying to kill you, fear would likely be the only emotion expressed!) the cast give a very good ensemble performance, with Sam Worthington hitting Neil with a cocky kick, and Mia Wasikowska making Sherry shake like a trifle in front of the croc. Loosely based on the real croc Sweetheart (who attacked 15 boats, but never killed anyone!) the screenplay by writer/director Greg McLean swims for the first 30 minutes in shallow Horror waters that allow for the group to be gathered, and for McLean to jab splinters into the playful power-play taking place on the boat.

Snapping at the heels of calmness, McLean cracks up the jaws of Creature Feature survival Horror. Sticking everyone in the wilderness,McLean finds thrilling routes for the gangs fight for survival, leaping from a stranded on an island fallout,to a brittle, tense climb on a rope over the eyes of the croc. Reeling out the great beast after a tantalising tease, McLean chomps up all the horror action in the water, with the full unveiling of the croc leading to a thrilling final confrontation. Before sailing down the river, director McLean and cinematographer Will Gibson give the title a warm, sand coloured glow, that cleverly gets the audience to drop their guard. Backed by a nail-biting score from François Tétaz,McLean and Gibson catches the unlucky tourists in an incredibly sticky Grunge atmosphere.Spraying the screen lime green,McLean gives the crocs world a swamp appearance where the croc hovers below like a moving tar pit,as the gang chew their lives with the croc.
 61. The best part of this kind of old fashioned monster movie is that it is directed in a low key manner. Not flashy camera cuts like the current trend but just straight ahead good camera direction and workmanlike.

Very good special effects with the crocodile and the actors are good enough to create some suspense. I liked the lead actress who plays the tour guide, very pretty and has intelligence and played the role well. I was not so enthused about the main lead actor who is the American tourist, he looks more like a model who doesn't have much acting skill but was cast because he looks good on screen.

The cinematography was beautiful with a lot of wide angle shots of the desolate landscape. Excellent work here. It really gave the feeling of an unexplored and mysterious place.

If you liked this I recommend "Black Water" for a more documentary style and gritty movie based on a similar theme.

 63. On the DVD extras menu Greg McLean says that the film was inspired by stories of a large crocodile that had attacked people in the Northern Territories. The story and characters however have all been made up specifically for the film Surprisingly, the Unrated Version does not feature any more unrated-worthy material than the usual R-Rated version. One can speculate that the Unrated Version is the original Australian Version whereas the R-Rated Version was created especially for the US market and therefore several plotscenes were left out. Those scenes are featured in the Unrated aka. Australian Version. a5c7b9f00b
