  1. Suddenly a demon appeared in the shape of a girl, sitting on a black mule. A more beautiful woman was never seen in any land. She kept saying: ‘When will I ever find my love? I’ve been seeking him so long!’
  2.
  3. Perceval awoke and raised his head, startled by the voice. The evil creature dismounted and said: ‘Perceval, sweet love, you’ve caused me so much toil! I’ve been searching for you for more than a year – and I don’t know if it’ll have been of use or pointless! I promise you, if you want to know the secrets of the grail and the bleeding lance I’ll reveal them instantly
  4. – if you’ll do my will entirely and lie with me! I desire and adore you so much – I’m dying for your love! If you want to know about the grail I’ll tell you all, and you’ll be free of the toil that you’ve suffered so long! Understand, my beloved, I’m the daughter of the Fisher King, and for love of you I’ve undertaken to reveal the whole truth about the grail to you
  5. tomorrow – for it’s in my keeping! And have no doubt: you’ll also know the truth about the sword that you repaired except for the notch. Just do as I wish, and quickly!’
  6.
  7. Do you know why the demon was pressing him so? To make him sin: to violate his chastity and prevent him ever knowing about the grail. For the Devil goes wild when he sees a man committed to good. So the demon pressed him again, without pause,
  8. determined to deceive him. But Perceval said:
  9.
  10. ‘It seems to me you’ve a lot to learn! You’re mad, misguided, pursuing foolish ends! I’ve no wish to answer your desires: you’re brazen in speech and frivolous with your love, unbecoming in a girl as comely and fair as you, so help me! Be mindful of your honour – and of God, and of the holy cross where He was crucified.’
  11.
  12. So saying, he made the sign of the cross; and when the demon saw that sign upon him it flew off through the forest, creating such a tumult, such a tempest, that throughout the woods for a league and a half the beasts and birds all shook with fear.
