  166.
  167. Heading a national team that's been going on year 2 of its rebuilding project, the Quebecois National Men's Volleyball team is the one that's no longer the world-beaters they were back in 2018 (Quebecois Commonwealth Games Gold) nor 2020 (Olympic Games bronze medal), but they certainly have bright future ahead of them as this team's filled with remarkable pool of high-class talent and great potential for years ahead.
  168.
  169. Leading the charge is Head Coach Laurent Ahn, who's entering his 2nd year with the national team. After a remarkable pro career in which he's won 5 V-League championships (including 4 straight from 2016-17 to 2019-20), 3 Imperial Cup, a Commonwealth Games gold medal and 4 league MVPs, he's transitioned very well into coaching by winning 2 V-League championships with Shawinigan Skywalkers in his 7 years there (2020-27). After his resignation due to health reasons, Ahn has since made his return to volleyball by serving as its anchor on Quebecois Broadcasting Corporation and as the head coach of the Quebecois National Team.
  170.
  171. Tactic-wise the national team will emphasise maximum utility and total offensive capability, with particular focus on 4A/4R system. 4A/4R system is a total-volleyball system which focuses on both Outside Hitters, the Opposite and a Centre attacking, while dividing receptions to both Outside Hitters, the Libero and either a Centre or the Opposite. Given the availability of all 3 setters who can distribute the ball as necessary, the players will be using all possible set options. Because of that, expect hefty number of substitutions due to high energy use.
  172.
  173. Over the course of the position's history in Quebecois national team, world-class Liberos would last for a long time. It all first began with Tyler-Luc Pelletier (Years in national team: 1997-2004), who then paved the way for likes of Bae Joon-Ho (2001-16), Noel Googoo (2014-27) all the way to our current holder in Adrian Rezende Souza (2018-). Rezende-Souza, the de-facto captain of this team, has remained the same dominant self he once was back in Centralis-Nassau Bay Olympic Games, with his excellent positioning and sets. His serve receptions haven't been as strong, especially with wave of up-and-coming wing spikers in the domestic level, but that is in relativity to his digs. In the meanwhile, splitting the duties will be Guillaume Shin, who is learning well under his wings. An all-arounder with great fundamentals, Shin's looking to improve his shaky mentale, which he needs to fix else another libero might take his spot.
  174.
  175. As we could see, there is a wide-open challenge for the starting positions in Outside Hitter positions, as most players from the olympic and commonwealth games teams have since retired from the national team. Leading what's currently the team's weakness is Milan Jang, who has stepped up admirably as a team leader and reliable scoring threat since his olympic debut in 2020. Daniele Centoni and Frank McGuinness are also stout players, with excellent receptions and overall defence. Both, however, have serious flaws with their games: Centoni's overly reliant on his height and high-power spikes, while McGuinness is more stable of two, but is short. Bloody short. So both will alternate with each other. The 18-year old Yi Joon-Cheol is an all-arounder who'll be joining California University this fall after a 68-4 high school career. Looking most likely to be the best outside hitter since the coach Ahn himself (he played mostly as outside hitter on national team, as well as his final 3 seasons in the pros), Yi will get plenty of opportunities to prove himself at a young age.
  176.
  177.
  178. For many years, Quebecois national team had a distinctive colour for possessing plethora of high-level blockers. With the Quebecois group, however, things haven't been looking close to pleasant. While the nation does boast one of the best middle blockers in the world in Simon Shim-Kweon, who can be relied upon to play in both Centre and Opposite positions, three others haven't been too impressive. Andrei Agontsev, Koreana dynasty and 2 olympic teams' central anchor, is now 35 and hasn't been as agile as he once was. While still leading the league in blocks per set or number of blocks made, his past injury history (mostly minor, but they were numerous) and aging reduced the effectiveness of once-perfect quicks. He will be heavily relied upon to add height, but will often be substituted with Reid Matthews, who's a run-and-gun machine on his own front but has a knee issue. Ha Hyeon-Jong is a solid blocker and an offensive option, but not as explosive on either option, so he'll be used rarely unless an injury occurs, for Coach Ahn prefers to use 3-man rotation for his Centres/Middle Blockers.
  179.
  180. With the evolution of modern volleyball continuing onward, sets and tactics have been developing at an astronomic speed. As a result, the role of a setter has never been this important in past. While most pro teams are going through drastic changes in setter position, the national team retains the same duo of setters it had in its silver medal campaign at 2026 Quebecois Commonwealth Games held in Montreal. Alexandre Capucon, the undisputed first-team all-star the past 4 seasons, has stepped up marvellously in place of Arman Knezevic, who retired last year after many injury-ridden years. Known for his fast, deep-angled tosses right at the net, and excellent technique, Capucon is the setter best fit in what Ahn's scheme. Alongside him is Cedric Gennet-Jerent, the rising star of CSKA Quebec as they enter a retooling period. Possessing stable, high-flying tosses, Gennet-Jerent is more predictable, but reliable setter who can be used to maximise height in blockers and taller wing spikers. During the VWE both of them will be used frequently, depending on gametime decision made by coach Ahn. Also added to the list is Bae Yeong-Hoo, a highly-regarded setter coming out of college. Drafted by his father's former team, he is expected to learn from Capucon and Gennet-Jerent for most part.
  181.
  182. While all positions are considered very important in volleyball, there is one position that stands out in particular to the public: Opposites. For Kweon Dong-Hyeok, this is an opportunity of lifetime for him. Growing up idolising Ahn, he was drafted in 1st round of 2016 V-League draft by Koreana, where he built a Koreana dynasty with Ahn and teammate 2 years senior, Andrei Agontsev. After Ahn's retirement, he took over as their key offensive ace, and has yet to come down from his height. As for his playing style, Kweon is a domineering opposite with high spike height and explosiveness, which more than makes up for his limited agility. While he never really became the all-around player that Ahn was, he is nonetheless a very reliable offensive weapon for the Grim Reapers. His backup, Daniel Thibault, looks to be a clear frontrunner in a succession race for starting position in eventual time when Kweon is going to age.....which is not going to be far from now given his age (Kweon entered the 2017 draft after high school). Marked by his back row attacks and excellent side blocks, the left-handed joins the national team after destroying all opposition en route to Mount Ester's first QIS championship since 2018.
  183.
  184. Also on board are Arturo Mendoza and [/b]Elton Bird-Veilleux[/b], 2 collegiate level players who were selected to the national team with player development in mind. They, for most part, will be kept as reserves and their playing time, unless all goes wrong, will be kept at absolute minimum, if at all.
