- “We’ve attempted to take some tissue samples,” Gagnon said. “The results were… rather dramatic.”
- He gestured to the synthetic, and she called up a video record of one of their earliest attempts at tissue extraction. Aleta and Tamar leaned closer to the terminal screen to get a better view. The chamber appeared on the screen, with the specimen resting on the floor, just as it appeared now. For a moment it seemed as if they were looking at a live feed.
- Then a small panel opened in one wall and a rod emerged. It had a small container attached to its tip, and as the rod extended toward the specimen, a needle slid forth from the canister. The specimen showed no reaction as the needle drew closer to its surface, and it remained inert as the needle penetrated its craggy hide. For a moment, nothing happened, and then green fluid jetted from the needle’s entry point. Most of the liquid coated the rod, but some fell to the chamber’s floor.
- Gagnon wasn’t certain yet if the substance qualified as blood, but whatever it touched, it began eating away at the material like an extremely powerful acid. Even the nusteel that formed both the rod and the floor couldn’t resist the caustic substance. The rod began to fall apart, and several inches of it simply disintegrated. The acid which fell to the floor ate a hole roughly the size of a human palm.
- The video ended.
- ...
- “The acid ate through that easily?” Aleta asked, sounding more amazed than doubtful. Nusteel was one of Venture’s most successful products. Not quite as strong and durable as Weyland-Yutani’s ferrocrete, but close.
