  3. Greetings Students! I wanted to introduce myself and check on how your summer reading is going. By now, you have hopefully finished reading Stephen Kings's The Green Mile. Below is your assignment due in one week. Please remember that enrollment in the Dual English Course is contingent upon completing the required summer readings and assignments. I am looking very forward to meeting and getting to know each of you.

  7. Without a doubt, The Green Mile is loaded with religious symbolism and many references to Biblical facts. As a result, an attentive reader will easily realize that the life and death of John Coffey are similar to those of Jesus Christ (you'll notice that their names have the same initials). Make a list of annotations (a fact from the novel, a fact from the Bible, and supporting quotes from each). 8-10 original, correct annotations will be worth an A- to an A+ depending on your depth of thought, correct spelling and grammar, and thoroughness. 5-7 annotations will be worth a B- to a B+. Less than 5 annotations will be considered incomplete and therefore unable to be graded. The following is an example of a complete and correct annotation:

  19. Novel Fact: John Coffey arrives to E Block of the Cold Mountain penitentiary in Louisiana. He is an impressively tall, illiterate, male who is charged with the rape and murder of two little girls.
  20.
  21. Novel Quote: "That year I had the worst urinary infection of my life, and...that was also the year of...John Coffey and...the two dead girls."
  22. Biblical Reference: During the last days before His crucifixion, Jesus Christ stayed in Bethany on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, probably residing with Lazarus, Mary, and Martha.
  23.
  24. Scripture: John 12:1-8 "Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead."
