- 01 Concave
- If you recall, the last track on GA:6 is called Convex. Ha. Geddit. Also this one samples earlier GA track Cavetone. So yeah. The title is working hard there. The tune is a surprisingly upbeat number, kind of a garage/2-step rhythm, with borderline joyful synth melodies going on. I wanted to provide some kind of celebration that we’ve “reached our goal” here. The trepidation of GA:6 retreats a little bit. And then…
- 02 If You Only Look
- … things get a bit wonky again. I was going for a bit of a Daft-Punk-on-too-much-drugs thing here. 4/4 walking around kinda beat, and an almost overwhelming jump straight into some woozy synths, with this breathing sound coming in and out to try and stabilise things a bit. I think people say IYKYK. It’s like… it’s not that bad, not that dark, just a bit disorienting and could even be fun if you stay aware that this too shall pass.
- 03 Land Marks
- I really like how this came out. After messing around with jungle breaks last time I wanted to deconstruct them a bit here, and up the ante some more with some horror movie synth stuff. So if the last one encourages you to lean into the weirdness a little, this one is really letting it ride.
- 04 Whorl
- I see this kind of a companion piece to Convex from the last EP, with its dark tinted dub, but this time I think there’s more of a sense of being enveloped by something. Ideally, it’s where we wanted to be, the beginning of the transformation or enlightment… but I can also see how that would be insanely terrifying and feel that’s represented here too. Also, at this point in time Nine Inch Nails (who I obviously love) had just released that NINoize album, so I was listening to them a lot again, and this ended up being a bit of a tribute in a way I imagine most can hear…?
- 05 Sink
- I mean, it comes after a track called Whorl, which references NIN… so I think we can dig what’s happening here. But this down-angled-spiral is not about depression, I’m trying to capture more like Swamp Thing’s acceptance and embracing of The Green. I feel like the slower pace and bass here are kind of warm and inviting?
- We’re through the looking glass here people (or we’re on our way, anyhow).
