- 25. Sprocket
- Tech
- Giants
- "The Fix is In!"
- Sprocket seems rather uninteresting (her backstory is yawn worthy), which is why she is low on the list, but she has a fairly unique kit than most other Tech characters, being able to create automatic turrets a la the Engineer, and place mines. She can even turn the mines into projectiles, which is fairly creative. The big thing, though, is that she can also drive around in a tank. This makes her very clearly superior to any other Tech characters not on this list.
- 24. Roller Brawl
- Undead
- Swap Force
- "Let's Roll!"
- Roller Brawl gets bonus points immediately for referencing an old, obscure sci-fi film. She also gets points for being a vampire. Roller Brawl's backstory involves her vampire brothers being kidnapped by Kaos after they protect her from the creep's sexual harassment efforts. Going on, you're going to notice that a lot of Skylanders' backstories involve unseen or named characters being kidnapped (In fact, that's Sprocket's backstory) and that spurring them into heroism, usually not ending with the character being rescued.
- But enough about contrived backstories, Roller Brawl, while not having a super interesting kit, is actually one of the more popular characters from Swap Force. Presumably because she is a cute girl, and I obviously fell for that because she's on the list. Her kit is what you would expect from the design, she slashes and rams into enemies, without much else. She can shoot her roller blades out as projectiles, which is fun. She also came back in Superchargers with a new and much worse kit, having swapped her claws out with a boring boomerang.

- 23. Fryno
- Fire
- Swap Force
- "Crash and Burn!"
- Fryno, though it may not come off from his name, is heavily themed around bikers. His backstory basically plays out like an incredibly truncated version of those episodes of 90's kids shows where a character joins a bad gang without realizing their bad. Like that inexplicable episode of Super Mario World. The difference here is that, once Fryno finds out that his gang was bad, he beats the shit out of all of them, and this manages to get him inducted into the Skylanders.
- Fryno's gameplay revolves around a heating mechanic, where the more heat you gather with one attack, the stronger your other attacks get. For example, with enough heat, you generic dashing attack has Fryno hop on a motorcycle made of lava instead. While this is fun in concept, the move that heats him up its own dedicated attack in a game where everyone only gets 3 attacks. You can even get an upgrade that just makes the bike permanent whenever you use the dash attack. Fryno is notable for being one of like, three characters to get a special animated vignette based around him, delving into his character more as we learn he takes anger management classes.
- For some reason, Superchargers didn't bring Fryno back when one of the Fire vehicles was a motorcycle. Instead they brought back stupid Eruptor.

- 25. Magna Charge
- Tech
- Swap Force
- "Attract to Attack!"
- Magnets are a fun theme that's not really utilized that well. Magna Charge, however, does use it well, and has a fun design too. His backstory is very generic, with him being an outcast in a race of robot because he wa sbuilt with a magnet for a head and nobody liked that because they're robots. He was exiled, learned how to use his powers, and then he came back and everyone was dead, which really sucked.
- Magna Charge's abilities include a lot of fun magnet based stuff, and also an arm gun, but my favorite is his dash attack. Using that, you can drag smaller enemies around behind you, and then throw them as projectiles. He also has a fun attack where he picks up random bits of debris that you can slam back down into the ground. And its all fun cartoon items like safes and anvils, but you can also do that to enemies. They definitely used the magnet powers well and in some fun ways.
- 21. Chopscotch
- Undead
- Imaginators
- "Chop 'til You Drop!"
- Chopscotch is an odd one. Her concept is very simple, a cute, tiny skeleton girl with a huge axe - but it's when you get into more detail does it become a bit strange. Her backstory has her as a fan of the villain Wolfgang, a metal-head harp playing werewolf, until he turns evil. When Wolfgang invades her home town, she manages to fight him off. The backstory brings up the fact that she's made fun of for being incredibly short, but that she doesn't care, which I feel is a somewhat decent message. Unfortunately, she also speaks entirely in rhymes for some reason.
- Her kit is basic, mostly involving her axe, because it's a big axe. She can also throw her head as a projectile, proving that she isn't even a skeleton, just something with a skeleton head. She can even turn her thrown heads into independent minions. She also has an upgrade that makes her axe suck in enemies through some kind of unknown, tacky force. Her playstyle is fun, though, mostly because big axes are a very fun weapon.
- 20. Wham-Shell
- Water
- Spyro's Adventure
- "Brace for the Mace!"
- Alright, get this. Wham-Shell here is the prince of an undersea kingdom, and he has a dad named Roland. And yes, Wham-Shell is his birth given name. Anyway, the aforementioned underseas kingdom was invaded by trolls (Another common thing we'll be seeing), and Wham-Shell steals a magical mace to fight them, presumably disobeying his father's orders. Wham-Shell somehow manages to fight his way through an army of heavily armed trolls, which is more believable than him having a dad named Roland.
- Despite this ridiculous backstory, Wham-Shell is another fun character. First, obviously, Wham-Shell uses his mace, another fun weapon, giving him bonus points right off the bat. Even more amusing is that he can also shoot starfish from the tip of the mace, somehow. You can actually just turn the starfish into mini-Starros later on, if you want. He also apparently has electric powers tied to the mace, which plays into his rather dull third attack. Wham-Shell has one more notable thing about him; he was actually not released until after the second game came out. He was packaged with a rather useless carrying case, which I still own of course.
- 19. Wrecking Ball
- Magic
- Spyro's Adventure
- "Wreck-N-Roll!"
- Wrecking Ball was one of my favorites back during the halcyon days of the first game. I'm not sure why, aside from the fact I thought he looked cute. And he still is really cute, he just got beaten out by someone later in the list, and Wrecking Ball just got less and less appeal to him. It doesn't help that he's mostly a grossout character, his kit involving eating enemies with his Yoshi tongue and turning them into fuel for a burp projectile. Wrecking Ball's name is a bit of a misnomer, as he only has one move related to his namesake, where he gains a magic forcefield and starts rolling around. It is a fun playstyle, and still unique to the series.
- Wrecking Ball's backstory is deliciously asinine. He started out as a normal garden grub, but ended up in a wizard's magic stew. Wrecking Ball ate the entire stew, turning him into something that is very clearly not a grub, but the backstory never states that he transformed, only that he grew. Apparently grubs in Skylands look like lizards. Immediately after this, Wrecking Ball attempts cannibalism and eats the wizard, but spits him out (It specifically states that the wizard tasted like a warthog, and there's a lot I could get into right there). Wrecking Ball then just kind of wandered the land, making people happy, until he eventually became a Skylander by being in the right place at the right time.
- 18. Knight Mare
- Dark
- Trap Team
- "Nowhere to Hide!"
- A common design you'll see in Skylanders is the generic elf design. It's a boring design that was played out as soon as the second elf in the first game was made. Knight Mare is the only elf you're going to see on this list. Knight Mare was our introduction to the very under utilized Dark element, added in the fourth game alongside an obvious Light element. Knight Mare's backstory is unfortunately very thin, involving a magic deck of playing cards that can tell the future, but her design is obviously the striking point about her.
- As you might expect, Knight Mare has sword based attacks using her flamberge. This is fairly standard stuff, but the high point of her kit is her war horn's abilities. Using it can create shadow clones of the enemies it hits, which can then fight against the enemy for her. This is an incredibly fun idea, and they do get a decent amount out of it. Knight Mare's figure has a very nice matted dark green paint coating to it, which looks far nicer than the shockingly ugly sparkle effect on her counterpart, Knight Light.
- 17. Dive-Clops
- Water
- Superchargers
- "Look Out Below!"
- Okay. There's some stuff we need to get to with Dive-Clops. First, he's the twin brother of Eye-Brawl, someone we will be getting to much later. Specifically, he's the twin brother of the flying eye part of Eye-Brawl, and neither of these two were named these names at birth (I hope). While they were flying one day, Dive-Clops had his wings blasted off by a pirate ship, and he fell into the ocean and, being an eyeball, had no choice but to roll across the ocean floor. Then he's found by a group of "jelly dwarves", who built him a diving suit mech. Now, the backstory of the Giants, which Eye-Brawl is a part of, involves them being missing for thousands of years, so how exactly did this course of events play out over that long?
- Answer, it didn't, because Dive-Clops ended up being sucked into a magical whirlpool that conveniently spat him out when his brother came back. Now they're both Skylanders, fancy that. This backstory is ludicrous, and is a large part of why I like Dive-Clops The other part is that I really like his design. However, his gameplay kiiiiiinda sucks. He's an insanely clunky character with an imprecise weapon that practically relies on getting in close to hit enemies with a weak sonar attack, and then shooting at them. He would be far higher up if he was fun to play.
- 16. Trigger Happy
- Tech
- Spyro's Adventure
- "No Gold, No Glory!"
- Trigger Happy is a classic character, and the most iconic design in the first game. The fact they managed to get away with him using two semi-realistic pistols by changing the bullets to golden coins was both clever and creative. Trigger Happy doesn't have a lot of characterization, his backstory mostly focusing on standard old west cliches. He doesn't need much, as being a, ahem, trigger happy, laughing maniac who happens to be on the side of good is fun enough on its own.
- Unfortunately, like Dive-Clops, his gameplay is what prevents him from being higher. You need to be facing right at an enemy in order to damage them with his shots, and his secondary attack, which has him lobbing a golden safe/pot of gold forward, obviously also only hits forward. His only attack to deal with surrounding enemies is his golden mini-gun attack, since you can aim that. Gun characters, unless they have something else going for them, are not particularly well done in Skylanders. However, Trigger Happy has an upgrade referencing Space Battleship Yamato, so it's all okay.
- 15. Chop Chop
- Undead
- Spyro's Adventure
- "Slice and Dice!"
- Chop Chop isn't just a skeleton. He's a half-skeleton half-robot created by the ancient race of robots called Arkeyans, who were important for two games and then vanished from the series for some reason. So yes, Chop Chop is in fact a robot skeleton knight, magnifying how cool he is by a lot. When the Arkeyans were defeated by the Giants, Chop Chop was one of their few machines that remained in Skylands, and he wandered for thousands of years, never stopping because he's an undead robot. Presumably Master Eon let him into the Skylanders because he realized how cool a robot skeleton is.
- As far as gameplay, Chop Chop is basic sword/shield guy, with bit of an undead twist. his sword can gain a "vampiric aura" that heals him as he defeats enemies, and he can shoot strands of brambles from the ground. His shield attack also gains the power to shoot out a scary face, which is cool. Chop Chop gets away with being a great concept and having a great voice, as his gameplay is otherwise good, but nothing special.
- 14. Pop Fizz
- Magic
- Giants
- "Motion of the Potion!"
- Pop Fizz is ostensibly a gremlin, like Trigger Happy, though you might notice they look nothing alike. This is because Pop Fizz is an alchemist, and he's constantly creating - and drinking - new highly untested tonics. The fact that nobody knows what he looked like beforehand is honestly a really fun bit of character building. Pop Fizz is really crazy, though unlike Trigger Happy he can actually speak without laughing. Pop basically became one of the main characters of the franchise after Giants, and honestly, out of the main characters they pushed throughout the games, he was probably the best one.
- Pop Fizz being an alchemist actually plays into his kit as well. He can switch between three different potion projectiles that cause different effects, and an upgrade later on can even let him mix the potions together to create new effects between them. Also, he can turn into a Hyde-esque monster form for melee combat, and an upgrade for the monster even factors the potions in, letting him perform one of three different attacks. You can tell they had a lot of fun with the concept of Pop Fizz, and all of it flows very naturally.
- 13. Rattle Shake
- Undead
- Swap Force
- "Go Ahead - Snake My Day!"
- Oof, that pun put Rattle Shake on my good side basically instantly. As you might gather from that reference, Rattle Shake is a snake cowboy who is also undead somehow. His backstory is thin, again focusing on old west cliches, but with more snakes. All you really know about him is that he's an insanely good shot, and incredibly slick. And yes, he uses a real snake as a gun, and he can in fact fire it like a bullet.
- Rattle Shake can shoot venom from his snake gun as well, and has a tail sweep that can inexplicably (and awesomely) shoot snake skeletons, which can be upgraded to shoot BIGGER snake skeletons. He can also create a snake ally, affectionately referred to as Deputy Snake, which can attack and slow down enemies. He also has a jumping attack where he creates a large brand by slamming his coiled tail into the ground... The big problem with Shake is his lack of any real coherence, something that's definitely caused by Swap Force member needing 5 more upgrades than any other characters. He is, however, still very cool.
- 12. Astroblast
- Light
- Superchargers
- "Ready, Set, Glow!"
- Imagine you're coming home from a vacation. It's the dead of night and you're on the 6 hour drive to your house. As you look out the window, you see a floating object in the sky, resembling an unusually bright star. It seems to follow the road, firing out a small burst of light in the opposite direction, and then suddenly vanishes behind the trees. Then when you get home, you find out that information for a game you're excited for has leaked - And one of the leaked characters matches what you saw last night.
- I'm not sure if I like Astroblast, I remember his gameplay never really clicking with me, and his figure being very ugly. But that personal story really makes him a character I remember a lot about. I will say that they at least tried with the space themeing on him, but they unfortunately didn't put that effort into his backstory - which is nonexistent, simply describing a single adventure he was on without explaining if he's an alien or something. Very strange.
- 11. Starcast
- Dark
- Imaginators
- "A Shot in the Dark!"
- Starcast is basically Astroblast done right. He's definitely an extraterrestrial, with his backstory amusingly involving Master Eon wishing for a Ninja to train future Skylanders, around the same time that Pop Fizz wished to get out of anger management classes with Eon. Both wishes are granted when Starcast crash lands in front of Eon. They play up the dark of space with Starcast, putting him in contrast with Astroblast, despite them not being introduced in the same game.
- Starcast is also a ninja, but he apparently throws stars from the "dark dimension", and can create a dark clone of himself to distract enemies. The big winner here is the giant star he can ride around on, which can be upgraded to just straight up turn into a UFO, complete with a tiny cockpit the big Starcast has to huddle inside of. You can consider Astroblast and Starcast a slight tie in this list, but I think Starcast nudged Astroblast out by just being more fun.
- 10. Ro-Bow
- Tech
- Imaginators
- "Compute and Shoot!"
- Here he is folks, the last ever Skylander to be released, and they definitely ended on a high note. Ro-Bow mixes the archaic nature of bows and arrows, and mixes them with robot shit, like firing lasers. His backstory has Ro-Bow searching the land for his creator, but unable to speak to anyone. He eventually finds a computer that both allows him to speak (Unfortunately, only in millennial lingo, we can't all be perfect) and also gives him the arching abilities of Robin Hood. I don't know why the computer did that but sure.
- Ro-Bow can, obviously, fire arrows, but he can also turn into a ball of death and shoot lasers. There's not much else to his playstyle, he's just very destructive to play as, which makes him probably one of the funnest characters in a game filled with very fun characters (Though he still doesn't beat Pain-Yatta). I suppose the biggest complaint I could lay out is that his arrow attacks are very overshadowed by his other attacks.
- 9. Pop Thorn
- Air
- Swap Force
- "Straight to the Point!"
- Pop Thorn is a Pufferthorn, one of the cutest species in Skylands (you're god damn right), but unfortunately their cuteness isn't appreciated that much by trolls, who sell them as hair care products for other trolls. Pop Thorn had enough of being used as a comb, and stuck it to the man, freeing him and his brethren from the troll tyranny. This is one of my favorite backstories, it's a very memorable bit of world building, and it's just cute.
- Pop Thorn is also DEFINITELY the cutest Skylander, and it was never topped for three games. He has a fun stance mechanic, with a puffed up form that can shoot homing spikes and perform a ground slam, and a popped form that shoots focused streams of air and can drop mines. Its a fun idea and both forms are very fun to play as.
- 8. Krypt King
- Undead
- Trap Team
- "I've Got the Edge!"
- Krypt King is basically the big brother to Chop Chop, as he is also an undead Arkeyan creation. The difference here is that Krypt King is actually a full on ghost possessing a suit of armor, rather than just a robot skeleton. After he possessed the armor, Krypt King fought his way out of the Arkeyan ruins he had found it in, gaining his trademark giant sword in the process.
- It shouldn't be shocking that I like the giant, more heavily armed skeleton knight with a sword than the smaller version. He also has way more of a mummy theme to him, too, another thing I really like, unsurprisingly. The Undead vibes for him are a lot stronger than Chop Chop, with Krypt King have the ability to seemingly telepathically control his sword as its away from his hands. He also ha sthe ability to shoot a swarm of locusts from his face, which is probably the best attack in Trap Team period. Unfortunately, the one thing that isn't great about Krypt King is his speed, he's one of the slowest Skylanders, which hinders how fun he could be.
- 7. Splat
- Magic
- Superchargers
- "The Art of War!"
- Splat has a pretty basic backstory. She grew up in a village where she did the same thing every day, but sneaked out to train in her own free-form, art-based fighting style. She saved the village from a Drow attack, saving their paintings. She then became a Skylander. Not much there, but it fits the art theme of her kit.
- Her kit also isn't incredibly special, she has a generic melee combo, and can throw blobs of ink to slow down enemies. Her most interesting power is her power to create paint ram minions, which can be upgraded to turn them into muscular paint minions, or into ones with large heads. Really, the only reason she's one of my favorites is because she's so dang cute, and I'm really gay. She'd be much higher if her kit was better.
- 6. Eye-Brawl
- Undead
- Giants
- "I've Got My Eye On You!"
- A long time ago, there was a magical flying eyeball, and a headless suit of living armor. The two then got into a staring contest of epic proportions, as it turned out that the eye had no lid to blink, and the armor had no eyes period. Neither were willing to give up, so they waged war across the underworld for hundreds of years, in an even battle. However, they soon realized that they could combine their powers, and as such joined the Giant Skylanders. Presumably all this happened after his brother vanished into the ocean.
- Eye-Brawl is such a good design. As you might guess by his name, Eye-Brawl is a brawler character who mostly attacks by punching, but he can also summon eyeball minions and, of course the eye can detach from the armor and fly around to shoot lasers. And... well, there's not much else in his upgrades. He just has a really solid base and design, it's hard not to like a big eye guy like this.
- 5. Nightfall
- Dark
- Superchargers
- "Dark and Dangerous!"
- Nightfall was a monster hunter who lived in the Poison Seas, where she fought against the monsters that threatened her people. However, one day, she found a massive egg at the bottom of the ocean. It hatched into the gigantic Leviathan, and she quickly rushed back to her town and gathered everyone into an escape ship. As soon as the last passenger boarded, the Leviathan appeared. Nightfall fought it on her own, buying enough time to save her people, but only barely managed to escape on her own. Her heroism was heard of by Master Eon, and she was quickly made a Skylander.
- So yes, Nightfall is an immensely badass lady that fought monsters on her own and saved her entire people. She's incredibly awesome, with a great design. She also has prehensile hair that she uses to walk on and attack with. Unfortunately, like Splat, her kit is a bit too tame. She has a hook combo attack, can shoot her her hair out through the ground, and can disappear into the ground to get behind enemies. It's fine, but doesn't make full use of an excellent design. She's also DEFINITELY a lesbian.
- 4. Fiesta
- Undead
- Superchargers
- "It's Party Time!"
- Fiesta's backstory is actually a direct reference to the 3DS version of Skylanders Swap Force, one of the rare times the 3DS games are ever acknowledged. Basically, Fiesta was the lead band member of villain Count Moneybone's court, but when some Skylanders showed up to stop the count from unleashing an army of clockwork robots, Fiesta realized that Moneybone was evil. He played music for the robot army, distracting most of them and allowing the Skylanders to infiltrate Moneybone's palace. While this wasn't noticed by the Skylanders, Eon noticed it and got him on their team.
- I have an immense affinity for the Day of the Dead aesthetic, and I also love music as a theme, so obviously I'm on board all the way with Fiesta. He can shoot music notes, turn into a skull to reduce damage, and, of course, summon amigo minions to help with enemies. This isn't an immensely complex kit, but it's a fun one with a lot of personality. You can even upgrade him to add extra showmanship, like a spotlight effect.
- 3. Enigma
- Magic
- Trap Team
- "Out of Sight!"
- Enigma is a being from a space between universes, and was accidentally summoned by a wizard who just wanted to play cards with someone. The wizard and Enigma became friends, as Enigma told stories about his bizarre homeworld. However, the Darkness, seeking freedom from its imprisonment between realms, attempted to use the opening the wizard made to break free and return to Skylands. Enigma performed the ultimate sacrifice, using his own magic to seal the opening permanently, cutting him off from his home. He became a Skylander after this sacrifice was made known.
- So, first off, Enigma's kit is just kinda bad. He has a generic melee attack, can turn invisible, and has a generic AoE effect. There's really not a lot to him. However, this is all made up by his design. He has one of the most unique and cool designs in the franchise, he's completely distinct from any other character. His figure goes all the way with this, as half the figure is transparent, with a very cool merging effect. He also doesn't have a head, that isn't just stylistic darkness, there's nothing there, as proven by the figure. You can straight up stick your finger in there. Sometimes a design and backstory just make the character, and Enigma overcomes mediocre gameplay to be one of my favorites.
- 2. Boomer
- Tech
- Spyro's Adventure
- "Bring the Boom!"
- Boomer loved explosives, and particularly loved blowing up sheep. When he was young, he was enlisted in the Troll army, where he was given plenty of stuff to blow up. However, he soon realized that the Trolls only wanted to destroy and conquer, which Boomer wanted no part of. He only wanted to blow things up, not ruin lives. After saving a village using his own special technique, he left the army and became a Skylander, only using his explosives to blow up the bad guys. He's also the only troll to ever become a Skylander.
- Boomer is great, and was one of the stand out characters of the first game (Mostly because he was really funny in one commercial). His design is unusually ugly compared to most others in the line, and his wild eyes make it pretty clear he's crazy. He has a ton of personality, and his kit follows suit. He can obviously throw dynamite, but he can also create a shockwave by slamming the ground. Of course, his most stand out attack is his third, where he places a bomb on the ground, which explodes shortly after. You can also get an upgrade that lets him kick the bombs around.
- That's right, there's a Skylander that just plays exactly like Bomberman.
- 1. Ghost Roaster
- Undead
- Spyro's Adventure
- "No Chain, No Gain!"
- Ghost Roaster was not always a ghoul, he was once a chef named Olav. When he was looking for sheep one day (Both his bios say it was for their wool, but don't let that fool you), he fell down the side of a mountain and unfortunately landed in the underworld. His body was transformed into a ghoul, and found himself famished. Ending up in a ghost village, Ghost Roaster ate the entire population, and was punished with a rattling chain that warned spirits that he was near. Eon found out about him, and out of pity, and because having someone that can eat ghosts would probably be useful, he made Ghost Roaster a Skylander.
- Ghost Roaster is blatantly not a hero in any way, he ate an entire village, and it's pretty obvious that they actually died. He's a villain through and through, and even post Skylandering, he still eats ghosts as regular meals. On top of that, his pallid design is incredible and there was never a character like him ever again. He uses his chain as a weapon, and can enter a form where he becomes invincible, but gradually loses health. However, his stand out move has him turn into a giant skull and dash forward. Some upgrades allow him to turn defeated enemies into ghosts, which act as minions... but another upgrade lets you devour the ghosts left behind in order to heal yourself. This is still one of my favorite abilities in the series, it's incredibly clever and works with the character so well.
