  1.
  2. Hello, Citizen Scientist [],
  3.
  4. Today we begin the second phase of Waking Titan -- the series of thought experiments that our CEO Elizabeth Leighton promised you a few short weeks ago. These experiments are beginning now.
  5.
  6. Some of the actions we ask you to take may seem confusing or strange. We'd like to assure you that every part of what you do, think, and experience along the way is important to our scientific work. We're studying not just the answers you submit at each step, but the process by which you tackle each problem, both individually and collectively.
  7.
  8. Thank you for volunteering your time and energy to the Atlas Foundation. We wouldn't be able to conduct this priceless research without your help.
  9.
  10. IMPORTANT
  11.
  12. Your unique code is: ---------
  13. - - 1L 1L 2L 3R 5L 8R 13L - -
  14.
  15. Please make a note of this. You'll be needing it to embark on your first mission at: bootsector.wakingtitan.com. We've included detailed instructions on how to use this code later in this email.
  16.
  17. Survey Results
  18.
  19. We found some interesting facts about the Citizen Science Division, and we thought we’d share that information with you. According to our findings:
  20.
  21. Now that we’ve finished analyzing your earlier responses, we’ve developed a new set of questions we’d like for you to answer. These questions are helping us to refine our understanding of the Citizen Science Division as a group and as individuals. They are available at: MISSION ALPHA 5X
  22.
  23. We also have a more intensive assignment available. As always, your participation in this or any other activity of the Citizen Science Division is purely optional. You are free to participate in the data collection mission, the boot sequence mission, both, or neither, at your choice.
  24.
  25. We're giving you detailed instructions for the first steps of the boot sequence challenge. Consider it a baseline test of your capabilities -- and we're looking at speed above all else.
  26.
  27. You may also consider this a simple test of whether you're paying attention, and whether you're willing to put in a minimal amount of effort to further the work of the Atlas Foundation.
  28.
  29. Here's how we'd like you to proceed:
  30. • Print the attached image on paper and cut out both code disks. Pin the disks together at the center.
  31.
  32. • Line up the letters on both disks so that they are identical in the starting position. This is very important!
  33.
  34. • Your unique code is at the beginning of this message.
  35.
  36. • The decryption string is listed right below it. This series of instructions tells you a number, and whether to move the inner wheel left or right. For example, 7R means to move the inner wheel toward the right seven spaces.
  37.
  38. • To decode the first character, move the inner disk right or left the number of spaces indicated in the first pair of your decryption string.
  39.
  40. • Look for the first letter in your unique code on the outer disk. Write down the letter on the inner disk that matches. Do not reset the disk!
  41.
  42. • The second character is decoded with the second pair of instructions in your decryption string, the third character uses the third pair, and so on. Proceed without resetting the disk until you have completed your unique code.
