  1. Thesis: Americans should be able to retain their rights to own assault rifles.
  2. Premise 1: The Second Amendment to the United States constitution gives all citizens the right to keep and bear arms.
  3. Premise 2: Taking away the right to own assault rifles would violate the rights of the people.
  4. Premise 3: Since 2009, American’s have become more supportive of more lenient gun laws, including ownership of assault rifles.
  5. Opposition: Assault rifles promote gang violence and make it much harder for local law enforcement to protect citizens.
  6. Response: By setting age limits and doing background checks, lawful citizens may still retain the right to own assault rifles, which deters unlawful owners from committing violent crimes.
