- HORRORTERRORS: DO THEY EXIST? THE CULT OF THE WOEBEGOTHICS/DEVELOPING RELIGIOUS POWERS IN TROLLS AND APPROVALS
- Horrorterrors in this universe are a religious concept and this cannot be proven or disproven. It would be similar to someone attempting to prove that God exists; one cannot go into deep space and find him floating around. The same sentiment applies to Horrorterrors. They are not floating within deep space, they are not within the perceivable heavens, and there is no proof of their existence.
- However, belief is a strong thing, and your character may believe that they exist. In the event that they do, your character may ascribe several attributes to them. Most Horrorterror cults believe that the creatures are massive entities which reside in the furthest rings of the universe. Emissaries of the Vast Void can walk amongst trolls in disguise, and reports of strange creatures (likely mutated trolls) are nearly always repeated by suspicious Violets as 'the Emissaries visiting'.
- The deep sea is tied to Horrorterrors; many deep sea Lusii, on Verdant especially, resemble terrifying beasts of the Void due to a lack of lusii diversity, evolution caused by deep sea pressure, the long lifespans of seadwellers and lusii meaning less opportunity to develop new feature, etc.
- THE CULT OF THE WOEBEGOTHICS is the most common Horrorterror 'religion' throughout the Empire, if it could even be called that. The religion is comprised of a vast assortment of texts written by H.P. LOVECRAFT, a prominent Violet troll with a terrible bias against lowbloods and a massive collection of horror novels. LOVECRAFT speaks of monsters on the Furthest Ring, of gods wearing gray skin which roam amongst trolls to terrify and scare them.
- The CULT OF THE WOEBEGOTHICS does not necessarily have moral laws; it lacks the traditional rules and restrictions of religion. Instead, the religion's main tenets are as follows:
- There are terrors which you cannot comprehend. We are playthings for them. It is best to avoid these terrors, lest you go insane. Some gods are kinder than others, but most are mad, and madness is dangerous. Nothing is as it seems, and you should question everything.
- Many seadwellers' 'god complexes' could be explained by the WOEBEGOTHICS' beliefs regarding the afterlife: namely, that there isn't one, but that you may ascend to godhood upon death and become an entity of great power yourself. Even in life, one can become an Emissary of the Gods or a Terror themselves, granted that they have enough forbidden knowledge and power. However, pursuit of this lore can cause a deep-seated madness in those devoted to it.
- CAN MY TROLL HAVE HORRORTERROR POWERS/SHOOT 'WHITE MAGIC'/TALK TO GODS?
- No!
- BUT MY CHARACTER HAS HORRORTERROR POWERS/SHOOTS WHITE MAGIC/TALKS TO GODS...
- Explain them in this sense:
- Your character BELIEVES they are talking to a god, be it in their nightmares or daydreams or prayers, and faith is a powerful thing. It may give them the strength or wisdom to do things that they otherwise might not have done.
- Studying the lore of Lovecraft can help a Troll, in addition, learn forbidden or taboo ways to harness psionic energy into objects, place souls into metal machines, purposefully mutate themselves, etcetera. Using science (however alien/Trollian/'magical' it may seem) in conjunction with faith can help explain why your character believes they have increased powers.
- For example: Your character has suddenly gotten much stronger and attributes it to their faith in the Horrorterrors.
- What NOT to do: Your character, obviously, is the favored troll of a super hot and sexy tentacle man in outer space, and has been granted physical strength by them.
- What you CAN do: Your character has been reading Lovecraftian lore and supplemental documents and has been inspired to train at night, when the moon is at its apex in the sky, believing this will give them additional strength from the Gods. As it turns out, physical training every night will make you stronger. Go figure.
- YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR CHARACTER'S POWERS APPROVED/DISCUSSED WITH MODERATORS UNLESS IT IS SOMETHING THAT, REASONABLY, ANY TROLL COULD ACHIEVE WITH TRAINING OR STUDY.
- Something that does not need approved: Your character now knows a lot about gardening due to the Eldritch Gods (as it turns out, this is because they have been reading up on gardening after 'praying' and determining this is their path in life).
- Something that requires approval/is not allowed: Your character now knows an entirely different language, and how to use an additional deadly weapon, and knows all of their ancestors, because a ghost sent by the Horrorterrors taught them all of these things.
- Something that does not need approved: Your character displays increased aggression and lapses into highblood rage easily due to the Gods' Influence (as it turns out, they are displaying aggression and rage because their religion deems it acceptable and their religion makes them paranoid and unhinged).
- Something that requires approval/is not allowed: Your character goes into a very cool berserk rage, complete with added strength, agility and dexterity, because an Eldritch Being is casting their favor on to them. Somehow.
