  1. Final Fantasy III has a metric ton of cut dialogue. This dialogue seems to have been from an early point in the game's development, as some of the dialogue references changes to the game that the final version does not have. That said, the meat of the text revolves around the many interactions of the main characters in new scenes. This is in contrast with the final game, where outside of a few places, the majority of the characterization comes from reassigning roles that the original four Onion Kids shared, leading some to believe that the characters are flat or that the personalities are redundant.

  4. - The text will be split on an area-by-area basis. If a certain area is short enough, it may be appended to another area. Dungeons and towns will be done in order, although any dungeons/towns appended to another area will be done on a story basis (i.e., if the Subterranian Lake is short enough, it will be added to the Dwarven Hollows). Note that a number of plot arcs that these scenes feature interweave between areas, so I may include a little footnote at the end of scenes noting where you can go to follow that plotline).

  6. - Notes will generally feature a line of the original text and then a DeepL translation underneath, alternating. The exception is the rare bits of english text, which will have a denotation in some fashion. While some of the scenes do have translations on TCRF, for consistency's sake, I will be ignoring them.

  8. - That said, DeepL is not perfect and I am open to corrections if necessary. If nothing else, the goal of this project is to draw more attention to the existence of this text and what's in it. That said, I find DeepL competent enough to use for this project. Another recommendation I have is RomajiDesu; not for translating entire sentences, but for breaking down the sentences into parts with a dictionary to help understand.

  10. - A further note on DeepL: Most of the lines become more grammatically correct/sensible if I remove the line breaks in the dialogue. I am not totally sure how I intend to go about it entirely, but for now I will remove the line breaks from the translations (unless I think the line-broken version flows better).

  12. - Notes may/will also have a few lines from the final, like on TCRF, to give a sense of where the dialogue is organized. These lines will also be left alone, like the rare cases of unused english text, but without an indicator of being unused.

  14. - This text comes from the US release of Final Fantasy III for the DS. The text is also present in the Japanese version, but not the European release. Later releases seem to scrub the text entirely, barring some of the world map stuff in the Steam version (will need to reverify). A dialog editing tool is available on Romhacking(dot)net, but you will have to dump/acquire a copy of the rom yourself and decompress it.

  16. - Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus can be renamed in-game. As there are rare instances in which their canon names are used instead of the tags the game uses for whatever the player puts in, this project will try to use the tags wherever possible. In the event that I have to sub in their names to get the text to display properly, I will use their Japanese names in the original text, and the following "romanizations" in the translation, based on a pre-release screenshot:

  22. - Remember; at the end of the day, this is still text. Some scenes likely had visuals that added context to the text, though in most cases it's easy to grasp from text alone. Also bear in mind that some of the scenes appear to be missing text anyway, suggesting that either some text was removed before release or that this draft was discarded before all of the scenes were finished. Thus, anything not also on the TCRF page is likely non-existent rather than me overlooking something.
