- Luigi's Mansion Max% Speedrun Info
- Q: What is max%?
- A: Max% requires you to collect every existing piece of money in the game to get the highest money count at the end, get a gold frame on every portrait ghost, and cheer up all 4 toads.
- Q: Why is this "max%" and not the "100%"?
- A: The game does not recognize your money count beyond an A-Rank (100,000,000 G), although it does keep track of your "high score." The portrait ghost frame also a completely optional task, you get nothing out of getting all gold frames. Cheering up the Toads only gives you additional save-points. Outside of that, there's no actual percentage counter so the 100% requirement is arbitrarily based on the highest ranking the game recognizes.
- Q: What is the world record and what time are you going for?
- A: Skozzy has the world record with a time of 1:48:14. My goal is to finish a run in under 2 hours. I won't go for WR unless I feel I still can improve my time after getting a sub-2-hour run.
- Q: What is done differently in this run compared to other categories?
- A: There's a lot more dealing with RNG from gold mice and furniture, so there may be a ton of back-and-forth between rooms if RNG is bad. Damage-boosting is avoided most of the time since taking damage makes you drop coins and they disappear very quickly. Saving on boos is done fairly often because sometimes you can miss a coin or a bill and there's not much you can do sometimes and you don't want the run to end (but you will lose time). More rooms are cleared for the money chests that aren't cleared in other categories, such as the Courtyard and the 2F Washroom. This run uses a glitch that auto-clears the foyer when you clear the 1F Washroom. It's not particularly useful if you safety save on the Foyer Toad (and you probably will if you don't get the save on the last boo).
- Q: How do you reset furniture to check it for money?
- A: Furniture is reset when you go two rooms away from the room you're checking. You can circumvent this in hallways, as sections of hallways count as separate rooms in-game (you can see when you move rooms when the camera shifts, it's usually when you go from a vertical to a horizontal section). Gold mice random spawns are reset when you leave the room, so you can simply exit and re-enter.
- Q: What is the highest possible money count in the game?
- A: The highest possible score (outside of duplicating money) is 142,390,000 G. This is broken down by 1,536 coins, 1,260 bills, 61 gold bars, 10 sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, 2 red diamonds, 5 silver diamonds, 2 gold diamonds, and 171 pearls, with the best combo being 19 large, and 76 medium and small.
- Q: Is duplicating pearls allowed?
- A: It's not banned, but you still must get all money from their original locations, so you'll end up with a higher money count if you dupe money.
- Q: What determines what frame you get on portrait ghosts?
- A: For boss ghosts (Chauncey, Bogmire, Boolossus, and King Boo), it's based on your health when you catch the boss. 90+ health is a gold frame, 60+ is a silver, and anything lower is bronze.
- For all others, it's based on the pearls you earn AND collect. If you collect the large pearl, you get a gold frame. If you collect at least 1 medium pearl, you get a silver frame. If you only collect small pearls or none of them you get a bronze frame. How many attempts it take to suck up a portrait ghost is completely irrelevant.
- Q: What determines what kind of pearl a portrait ghost drops?
- A: Every time a portrait ghost's health hits a multiple of 10 (except 0 and 100), they will drop a pearl. As they drop more pearls in a single suck-up, the pearls will get progressively better. They will drop 4 small pearls, then 4 medium pearls, and 1 large pearl. If you drop a portrait ghost, they will reset into dropping small pearls from whatever health they are at. For example, if you start Neville, drop him at 46 health, and finish him on the 2nd attempt, he will drop 4 smalls at 90, 80, 70, and 60, then 1 medium at 50, then after dropping him, will drop 4 more small pearls at 40, 30, 20, and 10. This will net you a silver frame. Theoretically, you can take a portrait from 91-10 in one go, and you can drop them as many times outside that range and still earn a gold frame.
- Q: How do you get the max amount of money in the game?
- A: Money is hidden all across the mansion in furniture, plants, chests, and ghosts. For money hidden in furniture, some spots have a random chance to not spawn money or spawn other objects, so it may take multiple tries to get the money from those pieces of furniture. When you unlock water, you can water the plants in the mansion, and some of them drop money and gems. There are various rooms in the mansion that are optional to complete in order to finish the game, and these rooms will spawn a green chest that spawns money. Finally, hidden in the mansion are 15 speedy spirits and 10 gold mouse ghosts that drop money when caught.
- The locations of every piece of money is entirely fixed, so you can make a checklist of spots that you've gotten for places that have a non-100% chance of spawning.
- Q: What are speedy spirits and gold mice ghosts?
- A: These ghosts are hidden throughout the mansion and will drop money when they are caught. Speedy spirits are visually identical to gold ghosts except they are blue, and are hidden in furniture in the mansion and once spawned, will immediately try and run away from where you're facing. Gold mice can be found in 2 ways, the first is by finding a cheese object and scanning them with the Gameboy Horror, and they will randomly spawn when you enter their "spawn zone." They are assumed to have a 20% chance of appearing but I don't know if this has been confirmed or not.
- Speedy spirits give you one shot to catch them. If they disappear, they're gone forever. They also will not spawn during the blackout, except for the 3 that will only spawn during the blackout. Gold mice will reappear as many times until you catch them, and they are also catchable during the blackout.
- Q: What's going on in the Laundry Room/Secret Altar?
- A: The bucket in the laundry room and the lower torch in the secret altar have coins that can potentially clip through the wall and drop out-of-bounds, making them completely unobtainable. We have to do specific setups that minimize the chance of the coins going OoB, but nothing is 100% consistent, so we'll need to reset if we can't get the coins.
