  1. Can we trust individual web hosting sellers?
  2. On forums, discord etc. there lot of individual dedi/vps and shared hosting sellers, trying to convince people to purchase.

  18. If we purchase from something like kimsufi, hetzner, ovh etc. then we will get zero support and zero server management. But those individual sellers says they can manage and support for the server.
  19. But still how can we trust them? What if they quit business later? What can we do? and we wouldnt get notified maybe?
  20.
  21. What'd your suggest?
  22.
  23. Every company has a starting place. Not one company started with a large team unless they were started or funded by a venture capital firm. If you feel you can trust them go with them. Always keep a backup of your site(s) no matter what company you choose. Any company can go down it doesn't matter how big or small it is.
  24.
  25. Truthfully, I think that you can certainly find a lot of small guys on these forums that can provide you a very quality service because they are very hungry for your business and willing to do whatever they can to service your needs
  26.
  27. Hi there I am not quite sure how to take your post It sounds as if you are suggesting that independent hosts cant be trusted with is absolutely not true large scale companies can not always provide personalized service because of size so at times you will find smaller companies who give outstanding support and not only that have passion for their work me for example
  28.
  29. Truthfully, I think that you can certainly find a lot of small guys on these forums that can provide you a very quality service because they are very hungry for your business and willing to do whatever they can to service your needs
  30. I completely agree with this. The trick is to be careful, do your research before buying. Anyone (individual, small business or large corporation) who is worth dealing with will have plenty of reviews and ratings out there somewhere. You can also do things like look in to the age of their domain to see how long they have been in business, and contact them direclty, ask some questions and try to get a feel for what they are like.
  31.
  32. Before buying products from these vendors, since you are confused. Take a decision with respect to some searches in hosting review websites etc. Also if you are good at support, then there won't be any issues in choosing these vendors or if support is also your priority you will need to research for some.
  33.

  35. I too agree with this. But i will say don't go with an individual because sometime they may be unresponsive due to any situation like work pressure , traveling or doing some other stuff etc. I will prefer to go with a small company which have SLA and other terms too
  36.
  37. Hi there I know your confused however I will say a small company is just as if not more capable as a large sure I would not trust just any old place but if you do your research you will have little issue but now if your talking about paying one person via paypal with no contract or terms then that is bad but you seem to be lumping it all together and lots of companies adverse on forums big and small so i am going to say yes you can trust legitimate verifiable companies big or small but otherwise no
  38.
  39. Hi Okopox,
  40. Personally, I have seen the smaller guys work ten times harder for your trust and business than some larger companies. That said, it is always a good I idea to take precautions to protect yourself. For example, keep an offsite backup with you or under only your control in addition to whatever backup solution your provider is doing. Also, always control all your domain names; I cannot stress this enough! Doing thing like this will ensure you can spin up the sites elsewhere should the need arise.
  41.
  42. Yes I do trust individual hosting sellers here on WHT and also from other forums but only if they're active on the forum, have a good record of positive reviews, and moreover they must be serving hosting customers for at least 7 years or more!
  43.
  44. New providers, even if LLC, LLP registered companies who are 1-2 year old, I'll not trust them easily and will pay month-to-month for any services.
  45.
  46. Outsourced support is normally low quality, only the small guy and company owner can give you personalized support, you only need to do your research because there are also bad apples.
  47.
  48. Every company has a starting place. Not one company started with a large team unless they were started or funded by a venture capital firm. If you feel you can trust them go with them. Always keep a backup of your site(s) no matter what company you choose. Any company can go down it doesn't matter how big or small it is.
  49. I echo this, everyone has a starting place, but as long as you keep a backup of your website always then you won't lose any of your data, and if you want to try a host out then perhaps put a small website online and keep tabs on the uptime.
  50.
  51. I don't think you can really compare a small hosting company to a big hosting company. They will offer you very different services and you also have to remember just because that company is now a big company and very well known that's not how they started out.Every company has to start out somewhere to get to where they are now or where they want to get to and if you don't trust a provider then you shouldn't choose them. Regardless of who you decide to use you should always do things to be prepared in case things happen, or change and this will be with either a big company or just an individual company. You should always have backups, backups no matter what. This not only can save you a lot of time, and a lot of money in case you end up needing it.
  52.
  53. Even the best, most trustworthy host can eff up on rare occasions and destroy my site. Much more likely, I can eff up and destroy my site on my own. So ... as others have emphasized ... *backups*. Pick the best value host based on the best information you can find. But never trust - not completely.
  54.
  55. I can eff up and destroy my site on my own.
  56. Too many forget this.
  57. And if it's never happened to you, you've simply not been online long enough!
  58.
  59. I have used several small host service for my clients' website and they have all worked fine, every company has a starting and and if they fulfil our needs we can trust them.
  60.
  61. Take a decision with respect to some searches in hosting review websites etc. Also if you are good at support, then there won't be any issues in choosing these vendors or if support is also your priority you will need to research for some.
  62. Especially with reviews is not a thing that you can trust these days. You can check for example the domain name how long was since created, how the company is active on forums, how the sales support is responding to an inquire. many times, you can find in small companies more support and pro people working for small companies. Big companies can use outsource support that in my opinion is not a very reliable support. So overall you can trust small companies, of course after you did your research...
  63.
  64. Regards,
  65.

  68. But still how can we trust them? What if they quit business later? What can we do? and we wouldnt get notified maybe?
  69.
  70. What'd your suggest?
  71. Look at how long they have been in business for and check out online reviews.
  72. Also ask for proof of insurance such as a certificate to show that they have current and up to date insurance cover.
  73.
  74. Too many forget this.
  75. And if it's never happened to you, you've simply not been online long enough!
  76. Some larger hosts actually have bigger issues then the smaller ones, I have known of multi million dollar hosts who have had clients sites down for weeks at a time, but they keep hosting with them because they are household names.
  77. The bigger providers also like to not care about support when buying out smaller providers, as they don't have to pay as much for staff.
  78. a couple of them have it as a part of their mission to slash costs.
  79.
  80. I've been thinking about a different type of trust lately regarding web hosts - what do you do with a MySQL db that has personal info in it? Do you encrypt everything before committing it to the db? or do you trust that your host won't be snoopy?
  81.
  82. Truthfully, I think that you can certainly find a lot of small guys on these forums that can provide you a very quality service because they are very hungry for your business and willing to do whatever they can to service your needs
  83. I agree to this 100%. Start-ups/ Individual sellers are more effecient and are very passionate with every single one of their costumers.
  84. Compared to the big guys, which has lower customer support and has very little care for their customers.
  85.
  86. I must echo the sentiments of others that have posted here. Often times small companies or individual sellers will work tooth and nail to make sure you're a satisfied customer. They're trying to build their brand and reputation. Their livelihood is on the line. With large companies, it doesn't matter as much to them if they lose your business because they have thousands of other customers knocking on their door.
  87.
  88. Web hosting is one of those industries that has a huge pool of "little guys". Some of these companies are undoubtedly sketchy and it's still essential to do your homework before deciding to hand over your money. Check how long they've been in business, search for any reviews online, check their website for speed/load time.
  89.
  90. If anything makes you think twice about them, you're probably right. For example, it's attractive to see a cheap offer, but remember, the amount you're "saving" you'll be paying for by having a poorly performing website that nobody wants to visit. If you're really unsure but want to give a company a shot, you could always pay for a month and see how things work out. If it bombs, at least you only put out a small amount of money and you're now free to choose another provider.
  91.
  92. Good luck in your web hosting decisions!
  93.
  94. It makes sense to use services designed and delivered by small-businesses, if their owners can prove their commitment and show that they are trustworthy. It doesn't help if anyone buys service from the major corporations. This does not guarantee quality and I believe it is not the best practice.
  95.
  96. If one is about to buy infrastructure then it probably makes sense to buy it from any well established provider. However, the small businesses are much more flexible in their service terms and their technical support services are usually better than those of the large companies.
  97.
  98. So, I would say it worths supporting the small-business owners in the web hosting industry.
  99.
  100. speaking personally i would almost never go with a large scale company again ro many bad experiences with one i would always trust someone here then random companies
  101.
  102. Every company has a starting place. Not one company started with a large team unless they were started or funded by a venture capital firm. If you feel you can trust them go with them. Always keep a backup of your site(s) no matter what company you choose. Any company can go down it doesn't matter how big or small it is.
  103. I completely agree.... Besides the indiividual or small companies offer best support and services. Just make sure to have your own buckup always
  104.
  105. When doing business with any type of company that I have zero experience with I follow a simple rule, Trust but Verify.
  106.
  107. I always try and verify that what these companies are saying is what they are really doing. If I cannot verify their claims and statements then I take a pass and keep looking.
  108.
  109. It is always necessary to keep backups with you as well of your important data. Some established providers might have good and bad support staff at skill level. At times you may get awesome support and other time may not. There are rare chances but server can get damaged, company can be acquired or fully shut down. Always verify that your hosting company is a established company for a long time, have a good support and a good Uptime of servers.
  110.
  111. Yes, I think we can trust them, because every big company has a beginning, they offer lower prices and better technical support, but you should always keep a copy of the files in case of any emergency.
  112. The most important advice is to do a good search before you decide, and pay only monthly.
  113.
  114. The size of the company doesn't matter much to me. The bigger factors are their commitment to providing quality services (based on reviews), how reasonable their offerings are (if it's too good to be true, then it probably is), and their payment terms (do not pre-pay long term so you can try it for a while).
  115.
  116. But at the end of the day, you only have yourself to blame if all goes south. Things are preventable - redundant backups and simply using logic/reason for making decisions.
  117.
  118. Truthfully, I think that you can certainly find a lot of small guys on these forums that can provide you a very quality service because they are very hungry for your business and willing to do whatever they can to service your needs
  119. thats so true. The smaller ones generally give you a better quality service that is UNTIL:

  121. Like here in the UK. You have big companies like BT, Vodafone, British Gas etc that are so big your basically just a number to them. The personalisation, good support, friendliness just goes flying out of the window. Even if you complain they dont seem to be bothered. rather they take a loss and offer you some compensation (heres looking at you British Gas) rather than giving you a good service in the first place. They are just to big to care.
  122. I started my own hosting company about 2.5 years ago, when i started I believed I could do it all myself. I brought my own equipment and started finding customers, it didn't take long to realise I was unable to handle the custom requests on my own, and the equipment wasn't up to spec.
  123.
  124. Within the year I outsourced some of my support (the overnight work), spent another 20k on new equipment and worked hard to make the service all about individuality. We can't compete on pricing of the big companies but we've gained a decent following by doing that little bit more and talking to people.
  125.
  126. As a few have said, its hard to trust smaller companies, but the big difference is the good ones care. When something goes wrong (and it will) we learn and do everything we can to keep you informed.
  127.
  128. I personally wouldn't go near a 'hosting company' that's reselling another hosting company, its understandable for web developers but if they don't want to take the risk with their own money, i just don't think they're involved enough.
  129.

  137. I started off in 2009 using shared reseller plans, but moved to using my own servers in 2012 when rather ironically the host started complaining about me using too many server resources running automated backups.
  138. Even multi million dollar companies are just reselling other companies services now a days some don't even run their own networks anymore as they get really good deals off the likes of Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.
  139. Microsoft in particular will give you really good deals if you buy enough servers off them.
  140. So it all comes back to the service you offer and the value added options that you give customers.
  141.
  142. I have to agree with (Chaddy) majority of the big companies out there are using now AWS for the simple reason that they get a better deals and believe or not they save more money that way. My main focus will be offer reliable service and take care your customers by running the extra mile with them
  143.
  144. Hi there I am not quite sure how to take your post It sounds as if you are suggesting that independent hosts cant be trusted with is absolutely not true...
  145. That is not what OP was saying. He is questioning the assumption behind WHT current wisdom that smaller hosts are more honest than larger hosts just because they are small.
  146.
  147. Then in this context no every host big or small needs proper vetting My point was that there is also no need to be supicous of a host because they are small
