  6. I came across this press release from Gamasutra https://archive.is/zMoJD
  7.
  8. It's about ReFig http://www.refig.ca/about-refig/. Which aims to have more
  9. women in the Games industry, and the premise seems to be the usual nonsense
  10. about misogyny keeping women out. What caught my attention is their People &
  11. Partners page which contains a lot of our old friends from DiGRA such as
  12. Mia Consalvo http://www.refig.ca/people-partners/

  18. Issued by University of Leicester Press Office
  19. Issue date: 26 January 2016
  20. The marginalised status of women in the video game industry will be challenged
  21. by a new international research project involving the University of
  22. Leicester.
  23. Video games routinely feature ¿hyper-sexualised¿ female characters , and
  24. despite around half of all game players being women they remain dramatically
  25. underrepresented in the industry, with only 4 per cent of programmers being
  26. female and women making up just 22 per cent of the industry workforce as a
  27. whole.
  28. Dr Alison Harvey from the University of Leicester¿s Department of Media and
  29. Communication explained: "Women and girls have largely been excluded from
  30. games culture ¿ as players, makers and protagonists. Additionally, many of
  31. those who do participate in games have been publicly harassed both online and
  32. offline as exemplified by the ¿Gamergate¿ hate campaign.
  33. ...
  34. The project, which will run until 2019, is led by Professor Jennifer Jenson
  35. at York University in Canada and includes the University of Leicester as well
  36. as 20 partners from international universities, gaming companies, gaming
  37. collectives, gaming NGOs, and professional associations.

  108. >The identity of the video gamer as young, straight, white, and male is
  109. changing to reflect a more diverse group of users, but this transition has
  110. been accompanied by struggle and conflict. This August, gaming journalist
  111. Leigh Alexander declared that ¿¿Gamers¿ are over,¿ but women and minorities
  112. still face significant harassment from other players in pseudonymous
  113. multiplayer environments. This talk will analyze how social media platforms
  114. such as Tumblr.com, a site that is particularly popular with women, have been
  115. successfully deployed by so-called ¿social justice warriors¿ to bring
  116. awareness to this problem by publicizing egregious examples of sexist and
  117. racist harassment suffered by female gamers and gamers of color.
  118. Not. Even. Trying to hide it anymore.
