  1. When Kira came out of the shower to finish her dinner, she noticed that one of the boxes of Chinese food was gone, in its place was a little post-it note.
  2. "Thanks for the food. How was your day?"
  3. -"Ghost, for fuck's sake, can we not do this? I know you're trying to be careful, but that's no way to live. And you already took the food, so you risked getting poisoned or getting a tracker inside you anyway".
  4. Suddenly Kira noticed a post it not hanging off her nose.
  5. "I could probably deal with that. Even trackers can't perceive me like this, and most poisons don't work on us anyway. Flip the card. I guess a tracker would ping me the moment I stop hiding, but eventually it would pass through me anyway."
  6. -"Seriously, can we not talk about it 'passing through you' over food? Just come out. I hate talking to you like this. That's no way to live."
  7. A young man about her age was sitting next to her eating noodles, a pen and a post-it pad were resting on his lap.
  8. -"Fine. Just for you. But notice that you're trying to disguise yourself too, I'm just better at it."
  9. John replied with a grin.
  10. -"I guess so, but at least I'm not doing that in private."
  11. -"We never truly know when we are alone."
  12. He waved his chopsticks around the room as if to imply that surveillance might be even here.
  13. -"They would have to find us first or do you think that they bugged every single shitty motel room in the whole damn country?"
  14. He shrugged.
  15. -"They have a long reach. If they spot you somewhere, they might just up the security everywhere around it, no? Better safe than sorry."
  16. -"Well still, I don't like it. And don't worry, if anything happens, I'll protect you."
  17. She rustled his hair.
  18. -"Don't worry, if anything happens, you won't even realize it I'm gone. So how was your day?"
  19. -"A bit nuts. But all's well that ends well, I got us some money and it shouldn't bring too much attention to us. And even if it did, they will be looking for a boy. Though to be honest, I'm not sure how well my disguise is working."
  20. -"I don't think it does that very well. It is confusing, but I still think you look like a girl, even with your hair under your cap. Choker also seems like something that guys wouldn't wear, but things are a bit different from the last time I was out. I'm still getting used to it. And if you're not sure about your disguise, maybe ask Greg to help you out? He's good at it. Though his advice might end up not applying to you. It could be like me telling you to 'just not be seen'."
  21. -"I'll do that. It might not help, but it won't hurt, right? And what about your day? What have you been up to?"
  22. -"A bit of recon, some money making." He pulled a bunch of small bills from his pocket. "Checking this room for bugs, and I tried to make contact with some other escapees. I delivered an invite to meet, but I don't know how well they respond to messages written on post-it notes."
  23. -"Couldn't you have just spoken to them?"
  24. -"Maybe next time. It's safer for me this way. Also, those notes are very convenient. Anyway, I'm done with this." He shook an empty box. "You bought anything for dessert?"
