- Long actions: usually continue for a long time, even if we use simple past
- (There is not a big difference between simple and progressive.)
- I was living in Michigan in 2004. = I lived in Michigan in 2004.
- Medium actions: we can think about the time as long or short
- (Simple and progressive have a different meaning.)
- I wrote the book. NOT= I was writing the book.
- (I finished it.) (I did not finish it yet.)
- Short actions: these finish very quickly, so there isn't much time "in the middle"
- (Simple and progressive are different, but progressive is very uncommon.)
- common: I hit the tree at 2:00. (It happened and was finished very quickly.)
- uncommon: I was hitting the tree at 2:00. ("hitting" should be finished very quickly. How can it continue before and after 2:00?)
- Non-actions: these don't require any time, they can't be interrupted
- (It is *incorrect* to use non-action verbs in the progressive.)
- okay: I knew the answer to the question.
- WRONG: I was knowing the answer to the question.
- ---
- progressive = [be] + verb(ing)
- (perfect = [have] + past participle)
- (passive voice = [be] + past participle)
