Seolhyun grew up in Sacheon, South Korea. She lived in the Gyeongsangnam-do district which is typically not the richest district. She grew up in a family who struggled to make ends meet. Growing up as an only child meant that she had nobody to deal with her own issues with since her parents were constantly working late night at their low paying jobs. This meant she had to gain a sense of independence from a young age.

In school, she was seen wearing rags and beaten down clothes since she had no money to get new ones. She admired all of the popular girls in school, especially the cheerleaders and did everything she could to join them. She auditioned for the cheer squad term after term, each time getting rejected. This lowered her self esteem down significantly. She felt left out and unwanted and so she often talked to their school counsellor. She encouraged Seolhyun to dance as it is a good way to channel all her feelings and it would make her feel good about herself. So that is exactly what Seolhyun did. She started doing dance as well as gymnastics and she immediately loved it.

Seolhyun was inspired to persue music when she started listening to groups like Kara, Miss A and 2NE1. Her dream was to become an idol and influence the younger generation posivtively. She wanted to spread a good message about spreading love and positivty instead of trying to bring others down.

At the age of 17, Seolhyun auditioned for Cube Entertainment but after a few months of waiting, she found out that she didn't get in. Although she was upset, that just meant that she needed more practice and to improve in areas. She would spend the next 2 years practicing and improving on her skills and this is when she knew she was ready.

At the age of 19, she came across this Seren Ent by accident, in fact, she almost missed it. She figured that she should try her luck because this company can blow up just like BigHit did. She auditioned with a cover of 'I will go to you like the first snow' by Ailee as well as a video of a gymnastics floor routine.

how they met;; they met at a mutual friends birthday party and immediately hit it off.

how they confirm they are dating;; A couple of the members of Ateez were out and about and one of the members took a picture and posted it. They didn't realise that in the reflection you could see Seolhyun on Seonghwa's back. When a couple of fans pointed this out, they deleted the picture quickly but by then, it was too late.
