- Label definitions
- We need your help finding Female insects among a large number of Male insects.
- It’s very important that you catch every single Female insect!
- Please use one of these 3 labels:
- Male: This insect is a male. I’m certain
- Female: This insect is a female
- Unsure: There is 1 or more mosquito that I’m not sure about
- HOW TO TELL MALE INSECT FROM FEMALE INSECT
- You look at 3 things:
- 1. The central antennae of a male insect branches off into a three-prong
- trident at the end. The central antennae of a female insect is shaped like
- a needle and doesn’t branch
- Example0
- 2. The side antenna of the male are furry. The side antenna of the female
- are more sparse
- Example1
- 3. Generally a male insect has a U-shaped tail with a small indent, while a
- female insect has a sharper and more pointy tail
- Example2
- You should categorize any insect you see that has at least 2 of the 3 female
- characteristics as a FEMALE (for example needle central antennae and
- smooth side antenna)
- **If you’re not sure, you should categorize the image as Unsure **
- You should categorize an insect as a Male ONLY IF you verify at least
- 2 of the 3 characteristics above for male (for example branched central
- antennae AND furry side antenna)
- The purpose of this task is to find the small number of females among a large
- number of males. It is EXTREMELY important that you do not miss any females.
- If you’re not sure, or if the image is blurry, contains multiple insects etc.
- please use Unsure. You should never label an image as a Male unless you’re sure
- it is a Male. We encourage you to use Unsure as often as you need to. You won’t
- be penalized for using Unsure.
- Edge case example
- Example3
- Once in a while you may see an insect on its side. This one is a male (tail
- indent and furry side antenna). However if you cannot be sure always use Unsure.
- Never label an insect as male if you’re not sure
- Example4
- This insect has furry side antenna (male chracteristic), branched central
- antennae (male characteristic), but a pointy female-looking tail. It’s okay to
- label it as a male because it has 2 out of 3 male criteria. though if you’re
- uncertain labeling it as Unsure works too (never label something uncertain
- as Male)
