And this made it furious! It raised its head up without understanding what was happening to it, and flames flared out in a wondrous fashion all around it. The twigs and branches started to burn and crack and the heat of all those flames began to set the nearby bushes on fire.

These flames surprised Lancelot. Before he realized what was happening, he saw his horse die and got himself so burned that he did not know what to do. The fires licked at his face and neck, and if he had not been covered up so well, he would have been burned right down to his nerves and tendons.

Do not think it was all over now and that he was safe! The dancing flames of the beast's breath were hotter than any furnace fire and whatever they touched immediately burst into flames and was burnt to cinders: many brave men had been singed and had their flesh roasted by those flames.
