- I just drove my Tesla model 3 from Denver to Long Island (self.cars)
- Submitted 10 hours ago * by Creativeusername833Tesla P3D-, Jeep Gladiator
- My wedding is on Saturday. We have been together a long, long time and finally are tying the knot. We wanted to bring our Great Pyrenees and Husky, but can’t really fly with them, so we decided to drive.
- So we finally arrived in NY. took a bit over 40 hours, roughly 10 or 12 supercharger stops.
- Would I do it again in an electric car? That’s a big maybe.
- It was between 30-40 degrees out most of the trip, we averaged about 350KWH of consumption vs the rated 250, so we had to stop every 120-150 miles to ensure we had enough power to keep going. Car is rated at 310 miles but we didn’t want to risk running out of power. We typically charged to 50-60% and got down to 10% roughly. You charge quicker at lower levels so we stopped for 10-15 minutes a bunch of times, got out, walked, let the dogs do their thing and what not.
- Autopilot is life changing. It made the trip significantly safer and easier. I barely physically drove at all.
- Would I drive 1700 miles again in the Tesla? Probably not.
- Would I do a 1000 mile road trip with it? Absolutely.
- The Tesla charging definitely was more inconvenient than anticipated, but the comfort, speed, and autopilot made it a joy.
- All in all, love the car, just wish I could go an honest 200 miles with 2 people, 2 dogs, luggage, and gear at 80mph with less worry.
- Some pics of the trip! [pics from the road trip]https://imgur.com/a/Sz8Qvjy/
- At 5300 miles on the car now. 7k by the time we get back. I calculated it and by 200,000 miles, the car will essentially have paid for itself versus buying gasoline in my last daily (Landcruiser) or any German sports saloon that is close to as fast, like a M3, C63, S4 and similar, ignoring maintenance costs on the German cars too.
- I’ll continue to use the Tesla for <500 mile trips, but longer than that and I’ll fly or drive my jeep most likely

- So you would charge the Tesla for 10-15 minutes to get 50-60%, then drive another 1.5-2hrs to get 120-150 miles?
- Honestly, with dogs, this might have been a good thing. Even for you, getting out, walking around, letting the dogs out is better.
- Why do you think you were using 350kwh vs the rated 250? Was the 250 rated at 80mph? I can see the extra person, 2 dogs and luggage (assuming this is another 400-450lbs) would increase usage.
- How much longer charge time would it take to get to 70-80% battery. Figure that 50% = 120 and 60% = 150 miles, 80% should get 190-200 miles.
-
- The autopilot to me would make the drive a lot better. Able to look around and enjoy the scenery. I know the drive out that way can get boring when you have to pay attention to the couple cars on the road.

- The charge profile tapers above about 50% charge, so every % after about 50 takes longer than one before about 50%. Each % between 60 and 70 takes less time than each % between 70 and 80, etc.
- Stopping twice to go 10->50 takes less time than stopping once to go 10->90.

- The 350 KWH rating is probably from running the heater and or heated seats... The biggest drawback of EV i've seen so far is that something we are used to in an ICE car of heat being a byproduct of an inefficient system but costs a lot of energy to produce otherwise. That as well as the 250 kwh rated is also probably at the most efficient speed which is probably lower than the posted speed limits in some of the states they drove through.

- Tesla really needs to add a heatpump like the Nissan Leaf or the Audi e-tron. They initially did not because they have a huge battery, but it's still a major factor in winter roadtrips. Heatpumps consume something like 3X less energy than just resistive heating.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]Creativeusername833Tesla P3D-, Jeep Gladiator[S] 10 points 8 hours ago
- One thing that helps is to use heat during supercharging to keep the cabin cozy
- I never had range anxiety though. Anytime I felt a little low I just went to a closer supercharger. Never came close to running out
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]phasedweasel2018 Model 3 | 2013 Leaf 2 points 7 hours ago
- Oh I don't get range anxiety and love road tripping the 3, I'm a big advocate, but a heatpump could certainly go a long way to reducing the winter, or even just "cool" weather penalty.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]zombienudist 2 points 5 hours ago
- I see you have a leaf. Does it have a heat pump? Mine did and the efficiency of my Leaf and Model 3 was roughly the same. The leaf is less efficient then the Model 3 so maybe the heat pump made up the loss. So I wonder how much of a difference a heat pump would actually make. I am in Canada too so I will see temps below when a heat pump really doesn't work well. So in places that get a little cool but not super cold a heat pump may be more of a benefit.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]phasedweasel2018 Model 3 | 2013 Leaf 1 point 2 hours ago
- There's a cool temperature dependent curve estimating that from about 25 to 55 the heat pump increases efficiency about 10%
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]thatnguy1967 Mercury Cougar XR7; 1998 Ford Explorer 5.0 8 points 8 hours ago
- Heatpumps work well in mildly cold conditions, but they don't work well below 25-30°F, and lose their efficiency.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]Alebringer 6 points 2 hours ago*
- Depends on the heat pump. A CTC heat pump, designed for Scandinavian climates works well down to -20C (-4F). And it have a COP above 4.
- I have one for my house :).
- Edit: COP of 4 means, 1kw in and 4kw out in heat.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]socsa 4 points 6 hours ago
- They are still 1.5-3x times more efficient than resistive heaters down to around -20F using modern refrigerants and multi-stage scroll compressors. The issue becomes that they lose their total heating volume at lower temperatures, even though they maintain efficiency. So they are still producing heat at a COP > 1.0, but that heat is not enough to raise the temperature of the air by the necessary amount. Really, the best option then is to run the heat pump at 100% duty cycle, and use a second heating source to "prime" the heat exchanger as necessary.

- While true, a LOT of driving occurs at 25-55 where you're running the heat.
- AC is often fighting a fairly small temp gradient (cooling 95 to 75), and heating even in 45 degree weather is a 50-60% larger gradient (65 to 75) cabin heat. Temperature loss runs as an exponent of the temperature gradient, and at say 35 degrees it's already costing 3-4X the energy to heat even with a heatpump, and another factor of 3-4X on top of that for moving from a heatpump-based system to resistive heating.
- There's a LOT of efficiency to be gained here from relatively little complexity and weight added.

- Another option could be an oil based heater. Could run one with biodiesel or cooking oil. A gallon gives about 16 hours of heat output.

- Yeah, the heat created through inefficiency can come in handy sometimes. Years ago my city switched the stoplights over to led bulbs because they used less power and had to be replaced less frequently which saved on labor. Everything was great until winter when snow collected on them making it impossible to tell what color the light was. The higher efficiency bulbs didn’t create enough heat to melt the snow, which you’d think somebody would’ve planned for, but they didn’t.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]kuuttis 2 points 6 hours ago
- Funny you should bring that up. "...But sometimes!"
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply

- It still should not get that high unless OP is also running with the windows open, or is getting into the throttle. Even with a total elevation change of 1000' I am showing 266 wh/mi on a recent trip at 40F with an average speed of 68mph.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]zombienudist 3 points 5 hours ago
- It is probably speed/headwind that was more of a factor. At those temps the heater will probably only draw about 1-1.5 kWs to maintain cabin temp. So over 3 hours you would be looking at a additional 3-4.5 kWhs of power used which will make an impact but not 100 Whs more per mile. This chart here has teh Model 3 performance losing almost 50 miles of range going from 70-80 MPH. If you are driving into a headwind that will also pump up energy use.

- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]BS_Is_AnnoyingModel 3 SR+ 2 points 6 hours ago
- The 350 KWH rating is probably from running the heater and or heated seats...
- It's driving 80 mph not the heated seats.
- If the heater used 2 kWh on average, at 80 mph and 2 hours, that's only 25 wh/mile.
- Headwinds and tailwinds make a huge difference on range. But you can always just drive slower (if it's close) and it saves A LOT of energy.
- This site has a handy calculator, which I've found to be pretty accurate.
- The upside is that it all really doesn't make that huge of a difference in time to travel. I spent a whole day with 20 mph headwinds and 650 miles took me around 13 hours with lunch. If I did that in a gas car, it would have taken me about 11 hours with lunch and fuel stops in a gas car. Sure, I can cannonball it and do it in 9, but I'll pay for that too in terms of exhaustion and misery.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]LarryGergich 5 points 7 hours ago
- The rated wh/mile is at around 65. At 75-80 I average around 300 wh/mile with the same AWD LR Perf that OP has. And thats on flat highways in Florida. If youre running heat it would be even higher for sure.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]skyspydude1 1 point 27 minutes ago
- Why do you think you were using 350kwh vs the rated 250? Was the 250 rated at 80mph? I can see the extra person, 2 dogs and luggage (assuming this is another 400-450lbs) would increase usage.
- Colder, denser air to push through, and cabin/battery heating. The Model 3 doesn't have a heat pump, and resistive heaters are crazy inefficient compared to a good heat pump.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]heydude1473 1 point 9 hours ago
- Cold weather, heavy load and higher speeds all contribute.
- Charging to 70-80% from 50-60% probably adds another ten or fifteen minutes. Fastest way to charge is from 10-60% as he did, because after 60% the charge taper drops off significantly.

- Some options include Z06, ND Miata, ND RF miata, Cayman of any year, boxster (the newer the better usually), FRS maybe
- But really the S2K is peak sports car. Mine was an 06. Had 190k miles on it. Gave me 3 months of pure pleasure and zero problems except it leaked a quart of oil a month. Was a one owner car til he passed away. I saw the ad and bought it within an hour.

The ONLY thing I hate about this car is the color. Black is a headache to own. - I did a couple-thousand mile trip from Cincinnati to northern Maine and back in a model 3 LR in September and found that my range was functionally limited as much by actual Supercharger locations as it was by the car itself. Same 310 range but more like 225 given that I wasn't charging above 80% and didn't let the bottom margin get too low, and I had to stop where the chargers were rather than where I started getting uncomfortable with my reserve.
- It reminded me of driving up the Alaska Highway in an ICE car years ago in winter. You have a little under a half-tank of gas but the next gas station is ~150 miles... so do you stop now and have a comfortable margin? Or just run it down under an eighth of a tank by the time you're supposed to get there?
- Seems like a problem that will go away with a more fleshed-out charging network.
- 3 hours of driving is about right between piss/food stops though. 800 mile return trip clocked in at about 90 minutes longer than average with the charging stops.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveReportReply
- [–]Creativeusername833Tesla P3D-, Jeep Gladiator[S] 4 points 7 hours ago
- You’re completely right about that. In Pennsylvania for example I had enough to arrive at the next stop with 6%, or I could stop at the closer one with 30%. I usually did the extra stop. I don’t want to run out of battery in the middle of nowhere.
- Driving to Alaska is a good comparison in terms charging density. Gotta be cognizant of your surroundings.

- I got the MR because that's how the negotiations with my wife worked out but I'm fine with a 260 mile range Tesla because the charging network is being built out so fast. Over the last year a lot more Superchargers have been added in my area (southern MN) and road tripping just gets better and better. I think we need at least 2x higher frequency of locations on interstates to make road tripping better because right now it's rare that you can depend on always being able to charge up just from 10-50%. A lot of time is wasted charging all the way up to 80 or 90 just because of non-ideal charger spacing.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]ZendriftaDamage Appraiser - Careless drivers are my job security. 2 points 5 hours ago
- More would be better, but even as an aficionado of long trans-continental road trips there's enough now for me not to bother with buying another ICE again. The convenience in the local DD use outweighs any long road-trip hassles.

- [–]trevize1138'18 Tesla Model 3 / '72 Karmann Ghia 0 points 5 hours ago
- Totally agreed. The ability to save a little time on the rare long-distance trip doesn't even come close to outweighing the huge benefit of being charged up from my garage every morning. I drive 130 miles a day for my commute and that used to mean stopping for gas 2-3x a week. That's now 0x a week. Extra Superchargers and faster charging times are just gravy at this point.

- It's honestly the opposite, at least for me with pilot assist in my Volvo I feel far less fatigued while driving and actually more aware of what's going on around me. 1.5hour highway drives that used to piss me off by the end are a downright breeze now with it. I will never own a car without it again.

- I recently had a rental Hyundai Tuscon with their lane keeping stuff and it was pretty fucking great for road trips. Normally after 10 hours we have to switch drivers because I start to feel fatigued but I was able to do the entire 1,400 miles and still felt really good.
- It doesn’t drive for you, it just kind of assists you. So if you leave your hands off the wheel it will take slight curves but mostly just keep you centered in your lane. But if your hands are on the wheel it can take highway cloverleafs no problem. You start the turn and then it just kinda takes over from there.

I drove 4ish hours each way to visit my GF for a few months when we were long distance. 4 was the absolute max I could do without stopping. - On a typical 6 hour drive, if you are staying around 70 and not doing a ton of passing, you should only have to stop once with an LR model 3. I've done it a bunch of times - you have around 3-4 hours of comfortable highway range before you really need to charge. It's really not that different from road tripping with an ICE until you get past 8-10 hours.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply

- How much does that change if you want to drive 80-85? Which are pretty normal interstate speeds here in the midwest. Add in winter driving with heater set at 70 and heated seats on. Not being argumentative, honestly curious how big of an affect those things have on range.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply

- Like any car, the efficiency goes down with speed. I stay around 70-75 and that had never been an issue - AP also really helps you chill out and not want to speed as much. I've never been anywhere that going less than 80mph felt unsafe but ymmv.

- Looking at the time estimates from abetterrouteplanner, I believe speeding is still faster despite the higher consumption due to the charging speeds of the Superchargers. That said, even a 5 mph difference has a big impact on consumption once you exceed 60 mph, and the time savings is apparently only about 5 minutes every 100 miles. This is true for all cars.

- I drove a friends spark EV about 6 months ago. Idk what it was maybe 120hp but 300+ lbs of torque. It was hilarious to drive around. I knew I wanted an electric car for a long time but range anxiety was my number one problem. The superchargers network and autopilot is what sold me on Tesla. Also I like feeling like I put my money where my mouth is and invested in the future of Tesla.

- It was between 30-40 degrees out most of the trip, we averaged about 350KWH of consumption vs the rated 250
- This is incorrect. Ambient temperatures only impact power draw from a cold start. Once the battery is warmed up, it does not have nearly this much impact on range. I have done this dozens of times in cold weather. If you are getting 350 wh/mi then it is because of elevation change, or your lead foot (which is understandable).

- [–]Algeradd2019 Model 3 LR AWD, 1989 LX 5.0 2 points 6 hours ago
- Yeah, that mirrors what I've seen in cold driving too. I precondition and maintain climate control while I'm supercharging, and cold hasn't made nearly as much difference as the other uncontrollable factors (elevation and wind). If the sun is out it's even less of an issue since greenhouse effect heating goes a long way. I keep temperature comfortable and usually drive in jeans and a t-shirt in winter time. I've never felt the need to freeze myself to squeeze out a bit more range. I realize this may not be the case in the extreme North, but in places where winter is usually just a bit below freezing on average, it's not that bad.

- I've done a fair amount of Tesla road-tripping, both in my S and my 3. A couple of observations I've made that you may or may not have thought about.
- Wind is probably the biggest unknown factor that's going to affect you. A headwind will cause a huge range hit, and of course a good tailwind will help out a ton. I actually keep the weather app up on my watch while I'm driving so I can occasionally glance at the wind speed and direction if it seems like it's an issue.
- Also noticed you didn't have the aero covers on your wheels in your pictures. That's obviously going to hurt your efficiency a bit too.
- On the topic of speed, I like to set a baseline of 75 MPH when I'm leaving a supercharger and adjust my speed higher or lower based on how my efficiency is looking. The Trip tab on the Energy window is great for seeing how things are going during a leg and how your speed is affecting your destination range. If it's a short leg to the next supercharger, I'll often go quite a bit faster, but longer legs I'm usually much more conservative with obviously. I definitely don't stop at every charger I pass though. Usually it's more like every other one, depending on spacing.
- All in all, I've done a decent share of long trips. Longest leg I've done in a single day was about 850 miles in one day in my S. Longest I've done in one direction was 1200 miles (over two days) in my 3. I personally enjoy it more than trips in my ICE cars. My stops usually correspond fairly well with bathroom/snack/meal breaks and I've rarely ever found myself actually sitting in the car waiting to get back on the road while it charges. The 3 is also better on trips than the S overall in my opinion if you don't need the extra space. The 3 charges faster, and honestly, I found the seats more comfortable for long stretches.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveReportReply
- [–]LarryGergich 5 points 7 hours ago
- As more highspeed chargers get added to the roads it will get better too. Like you mention you dont stop at every charger, but if the next one is too far, you are forced to stop with some charge remaining. Because of the charge rate decreasing with charge, road trips will be most effecient when there are enough superchargers (or other brands) that you can comfortably run the battery down to single digit percent before stopping everytime.
- PermalinkEmbedSaveParentReportReply
- [–]Algeradd2019 Model 3 LR AWD, 1989 LX 5.0 1 point 7 hours ago
- Yup. I target around 15-20% remaining for my supercharger stops ideally just to be on the safe side. If it's looking like I'll get there closer to say 30%, I'll speed up if possible. And then depending on the next planned stop, I'll usually charge up between 60-80%. It takes a little more thought than just "drive till the gas light comes up, then fill up at the next place", but it's not that hard at all with a little planning. I make a yearly family trip of about 850 miles one way around Christmas time, and between last year and now, two more superchargers have popped up along the way where there were gaps before, so we have even more options for stopping on that trip this year than we did last year.

- Oh god headwinds. Hit a day of solid 30 mph headwinds going through the NV and CA deserts on my road trip. Driving an SR+ and its the only time I've had range anxiety. The energy calculations were telling me I should arrive with 30% charge and I was coming into the superchargers at 8-15%. Trying to stay efficient at 80mph with a 30 mph head wind doesn't work.

- I see. Interesting to compare to gas cars. I generally think of daily driving as the best use case for Bev's : charge at home, evs are more efficient at city driving, cheaper, significantly less noise at low speeds. whereas road trip are the worse case scenario, bc: longer refueling times, more complicated logistics, anxiety from range. it seems like the Tesla fared pretty well in its worse case scenario, and that the supercharger network worked admirably.
- Sounds like the bigger difference for you personally may be old car vs new car. New cars are great for road trips bc: significantly less stressful, way less nvh, access to latest tech. I don't mind driving older cars but I certainly don't miss taking my 17 yo Subaru on road trips, that thing was a beast.

- Why didn't you put the aero caps back on? I know people don't like the look but the tests I have seen would have given you a 4 percent increase in efficiency which would have been significant over the distances you were driving. The performance is pretty thirsty though. I have a LR RWD that I have driven since may 2018 in Canada. So that is through one winter and the start of another now. My lifetime efficiency is 160 Whs a kms which works out to 258 Whs a mile so pretty close to rated. I have taken a few long trips and in summer it was easy get better then my 160 average. My one 1200 km trip was 156 Whs per km. Averaged 110-115 km/h (speed limits here are 100 km/h). It is the 80 MPH that is going to start killing your efficiency especially if you are driving into any headwind. If you are able to keep it to 70 MPH that will be a big help. Based on The Tesla Range charts going from 70 - 80 MPH in the Model 3 performance with 18s will decrease range by 50 miles.

- Can you input your final destination from your starting point and the Tesla route you to your charging stops, or do you have to look for charging stops manually? Can the Tesla adjust charging stops based on driving situations? For example, first calculation was 200 miles away, but due to excess electricity use, a new stop will be added?

- Yeah and that’s what we did. When we were going I’d calculate how far the next stop or the next two stops are and make a decision there. Sometimes I stopped and sometimes I kept going, depending on battery. It was like a puzzle / game

- Does the Tesla calculate it itself, or you did the calculations manually?

- Both. It will tell you to stay under 75 to reach your destination or it will tell you to stop at the closer one if you have to. It is pretty smart. Of course we had a lot of time to fiddle with it so we checked various routes and charters and figured out what we thought was best. On the way back I’m going to aim to stop less and get more battery.

- I was here this summer and saw a fleet of 20+ Aston martins drive through Huntington. I’d love to come out and check out the car scene. It’s pretty big in Colorado too!

- That's awesome! I remember passing by the Brookhaven Town Hall one day and there were dozens of cars either parked on both sides of the road or driving away. I'll never forget it. I remember seeing EVO's, STI's, BMW's, old school (at least to us Gen Z's) Civic's, you name it, Foreign and Domestic. However, once I saw a black and a red MK4 Supra (both my favorite colors on my dream car) pass me by I was so excited I ended up speeding on the way home most of the time. Unfortunately, as I was leaving I did see multiple cops trying to kick the group off the street because they were causing a little traffic.

- No joke, I did Denver CO to Port Washington NY not too long ago with two other guys in a 1968 Dodge Dart. Took about 36 hours, with stops for gas and food. Honestly that’s not much faster than you did it. It was a blast. Would do it again.

- Eh I’ll stick with my jetta turbo diesel, don’t get me wrong I love Tesla and the line of cars they have but if you don’t live in an area that is fairly well populated then owning a Tesla is quite useless, all of my family lives up north in Indiana in quite literally middle of no where.

- Indiana is pretty small, looks like about the farthest distance between any superchargers is ~120 mi, which is well within a Model 3's range even if you've got a serious lead foot problem.

- I have literally no complaints. Also my car is faster than when I bought it from an OTA update. Thanks Elon

- It's interesting that to break even you need to go 200k miles. There's no way the battery pack lasts that long and I doubt the replacement will be under 6k.
