  1. The Lamplighter
  2. Name: Orion
  3. Order: Witch-finder
  4.
  5. Physicality: Elite
  6. Orion is both stronger and tougher than most. He can carry a great deal of weight and can do so for a long time without sleep or rest. In addition he possesses a stronger than average healing factor.
  7.
  8. Staff Combat: Veteran
  9. The staff is Orion's favoured weapon and when he wields it (or any staff-like weapon such as a lamp-post), any three dice that he might need to roll automatically fall into their most favoured order rather than simply being allocated down the line.
  10.
  11. Sword Combat: Experienced
  12. Though not his primary weapon of choice, Orion has substantial experience with the sword regardless. When wielding such a weapon he takes no penalty.
  13.
  14. Gun Combat: Experienced
  15. Orion knows how to use a pistol and a rifle both. He takes no penalty while using them.
  16.
  17. Unarmed Combat: Adequate
  18. Though he has his considerable strength and bulk to back him up, Orion is not particularly well-practised in the fine art of brawling without a weapon. When he is making a roll involving unarmed combat, reduce the highest of the three rolls by one.
  19.
  20. MAGIC
  21.
  22. Wick
  23. There is a difference between wick and Wick. The former is a favoured tool and effective badge of office for Lamplighters, a firebrand set atop a long handle designed for both easy lighting of lamp-posts and for being a potent tool for Flame Rites. The latter, when capitalised, refers to the Flame Internal, one's capacity for holy magic and a measure for it. Such Wick is the fuel for magic and it depends on the user's externalised source of fire. The stronger the implement, the more raw Wick there is to draw upon.
  24.
  25. Candle: 1 Wick
  26. Small Lantern/Torch: 2 Wick
  27. Large Lantern/Torch: 3 Wick
  28. Open Conflagration: 5 Wick
  29. Wildfire: 7 Wick
  30. Lamplighter's wick: 10 Wick
  31. Central Lamp-Post: 20 Wick
  32. Orion's Lamp-Post: 100 Wick
  33.
  34. One should be careful when burning through their Wick for doing so drains the fire of their current implement. It is forbidden to use Central Lamp-Posts save in emergencies for this very reason, every point of Wick used from a lamp lessens the time of sanctuary it grants its respective settlement. The lamplighter's wick can be recharged through ritual but this is a function unique to it and reflective of its superb design as a tool of flame.
  35. To recharge such a wick requires both time and peace of mind and once completed, gain a number of Wick points equal to the highest of three d6.
  36.
  37. Flame Rites: Basic
  38. Orion has only an adequate grasp of the Flame Rites but even so, this holy magic is one of the greatest weapons available against creatures of darkness. His current level of mastery grants him the following Rites:
  39.
  40. -Friend to the Flame-
  41. Cost: 0 Wick
  42. This magical protection is every true Lamplighter's birthright and one of the simplest Flame Arts possible. Orion cannot be harmed by either normal or magical fire save that of the greatest potency. In addition he can also grasp and manipulate fire with his hands as if it was an ordinary physical substance. This Rite costs nothing to maintain but if Orion's Wick is ever fully exhausted this protection will vanish too and will return only when his Wick returns to at least 1 point.
  43.
  44. -Hide The Flame-
  45. Cost: 0 Wick
  46. Orion can dampen fire with his hands and can, when manifesting or igniting flame directly, will it to extinguish itself temporarily. This allows him to hide or delay his fire as he sees fit to a current maximum duration of thirty seconds. This Rite costs nothing to use but cannot be used if Orion's Wick is at 0.
  47.
  48. -Ignite Weapon-
  49. Cost: 1 Wick
  50. Orion can set any weapon he wields alight with holy fire that does not burn the weapon itself and allows to deal flaming damage to any foes it strikes in melee. The duration of this enchantment depends on the local power of the Dark and can be renewed periodically at a cost of 1 Wick each time. This Flame Rite can be used to set other objects aflame as well, anything Orion touches, but such an object is not immune to the summoned flame and must be capable of being burned in the first place.
  51. UPGRADE: With the Ducal Firecrafting honing it, additional Wick can be spent when activating this Rite to store another Flame Rite or Benediction within the ignited object. This additional effect will remain until the fire burns out or until Orion activates it. The extra cost of Wick is the cost of the Rite or Benediction in question. In addition, Ignite Weapon now also possesses a Power Number of 3. Whenever any action concerning an object under the effects of this Rite requires a roll, any legal rolls of 3 will replenish Orion's Wick by 1.
  52.
  53. -Detonate-
  54. Cost: 1 Wick
  55. This Flame Rite utterly destroys the implement used to cast it, Orion exciting the potential fire within the tool until it is ready to explode at the slightest provocation. Thus it is to be considered a weapon of last resort when used with a precious tool like a lamplighter's wick but can be used a lot more readily with something disposable like a lantern. This Rite only consumes one Wick from the object in question but the explosion itself consumes all remaining Wick from it as it goes up in flames. The more untapped Wick still contained within the tool when it is detonated, the stronger the explosion.
  56.
  57. -Self-Ignition-
  58. Cost: 3 Wick
  59. Orion clothes himself in holy fire as he sets both himself and his armour aflame. Like Ignite Weapon this fire does not harm his possessions or, for as long as Friend to the Flame can last, Orion himself. This fire burns everything Orion comes into contact with and can used both defensively and offensively. The duration of this Rite is like that of Ignite Weapon in that it depends upon the local power of the Dark but Self-Ignition has only a little more than half the duration Ignite Weapon would have due to requiring a bigger flame. This Rite can be renewed periodically at the cost of 3 Wick each time.
  60. UPGRADE: With the power of the Dead King's Crown, additional Wick can be spent when activating this Rite to store another Flame Rite or Benediction within Orion's body. This additional effect will remain until the fire burns out or until Orion activates it. The extra cost of Wick is the cost of the Rite or Benediction in question. In addition, Self-Ignition now also possesses a Power Number of 1. Whenever any action concerning an object under the effects of this Rite requires a roll, any legal rolls of 1 will replenish Orion's Wick by 1.
  61.
  62. -Immolate-
  63. Cost: 3+ Wick
  64. The most powerful Flame Rite Orion has access to, this Rite generates a stream of fire from the tool and shoots it directly into the target. It has less range then most guns but is usually far more powerful. The cost of this Flame Rite is variable because while the base form of it costs only 3 Wick, Orion can choose at the time of casting to dump any amount of additional Wick into to it and empower the Rite. This both strengthens it and extends the duration of the stream.
  65. UPGRADE: With the Spark fuelling it, additional Wick can now be dumped into the Immolate after casting it as well as before. In addition Immolate now possesses a Power Number of 4. Whenever an action involving an Immolate requires a dice-roll, any rolls of 4 within the usual 3 will refresh Orion's Wick by 1 point.
  66.
  67.
  68. Benedictions: Basic
  69. Benedictions are a far softer magic then the Flame Rites, the shield to their sword. This magic draws more from light and warmth than it does actual fire. Thus they draw upon less Wick but can only be used when light is present. As a mostly helpful magic, Benedictions can ONLY be used on willing targets or targets who are not expecting the magic and only a master of Benediction can override this law. Orion's current basic grasp of Benediction grants him the following:
  70.
  71. -Benediction of Warmth-
  72. Cost: 0 Wick (Light Required)
  73. This blessing requires Orion to touch the target (or himself) and little else, imparting a sense of warmth upon the target that wards them from mundane cold. It can also protect from weak or incidental magical sources of cold such as witch-chill, effectively dispelling them from the target. When used on a creature of the Dark, this Benediction both lets them feel the cold and imparts a chill deep into their bones.
  74.
  75. -Cleansing Benediction-
  76. Cost: 1 Wick (Light Required)
  77. This Benediction dispels minor curses and other magical stains of the Dark from the target, provided that the target still holds fire within their heart and is a child of light. Stronger curses will require a more powerful Benediction but may still be lessened by this blessing. When used on a creature of the Dark this Benediction makes them extremely uncomfortable.
  78.
  79. -Purging Benediction-
  80. Cost: 1 Wick (Light Required)
  81. This blessing requires Orion to touch the target and to remain in contact for a temporary duration as the Benediction slowly pulls it out all poisons from their bodies and burns them away. This works on magical poisons as well but not against magical poisons that explicitly protected against such means. When used on a creature of the Dark this Benediction can disorient them.
  82.
  83. -Benediction of Succour-
  84. Cost: 1 Wick (Light Required)
  85. This blessing uses some of Orion's Flame Internal to replenish that of the target so it cannot be self-targeted without creating a useless feedback loop. When touching the target Orion may choose two outcomes: Either the target's Wick pool increases by one point (but cannot break the maximum) or the target is relieved of their physical stresses, wiping clean exhaustion, hunger and discomfort and placing them into a brief state of bliss. When used on a creature of the Dark this Benediction causes stinging pain and a lasting minor ache.
  86.
  87. -Cauterise Wound-
  88. Cost: 2 Wick (Light Required)
  89. This Benediction is fair bit more violent than most, a brief burst of light and heat from Orion's hand that effectively burns any wounds he touches shut. This cauterisation is instant and far less painful than using normal fire or Flame Rites to do so, the target only feeling a brief flash of pain or nothing at all. This also sterilises the wound. When used on a creature of Dark this Benediction replicates the effects of a localised Immolation Flame Rite, burning them and leaving a temporary brand upon their skin in the shape of Orion's hand.
  90.
  91. -Benediction of Relief-
  92. Cost: 2+ Wick (Requires Light)
  93. Taught to you by Belle
  94. This blessing fuels the body and soul of those it touches, piecing them together and making them whole. The target of this Benediction has their natural healing process vastly improved and considering that Third Men already possess a healing factor, that can mean quite a lot. Additional Wick can be burned before the spell is cast to increase the blessing’s power. When used on creatures of the Dark this slowly dissolves their flesh.
  95. UPGRADE: With the plundered knowledge gained from the Witchfinder's Last Lesson, additional Wick may be dumped into this Benediction after the casting just as it can be before. In addition the Benediction of Relief now possesses a Power Number of 4. Whenever the dice are rolled for an action undertaken by someone recently blessed by this Benediction or whenever Orion must roll to use this Benediction as a weapon against a creature of darkness, every legal d6 that lands on the Power Number refreshes Orion's Wick by 1 point.
  96.
  97. Runecarving
  98. Orion doesn't really know much about this at all, it was a guarded art for how dangerous it could be in the wrong hands. Before the end of the world runes were commonplace but they are getting rarer and rarer as each darkened year passes by. The runes function by calling upon and mimicking holy shapes and symbols and to carve them properly the runesmith must have said symbol practically embedded into their mind and the ability to picture every aspect of it perfectly and without error.
  99. Orion currently knows of no runes.
  100.
  101.
  102. Plundered Witch Lore
  103. While not theoretically magic, the ways of the Witch-finders has allowed them to access troves of otherwise forbidden knowledge and minor techniques relating to the Dark. These methods are frowned upon by other Lamplighters for trespassing too close to actual witch-craft but they cannot deny their effectiveness. Orion has the following witch lore:
  104.
  105. -Witch Watcher-
  106. Orion has an almost-familiar knowledge of witchcraft, witch-sign and the spells born from such. He can typically guess quite accurately at the nature of a spell, its duration and its effect. He can instantly discern the difference between a strange yet harmless gesture and a witch-sign and can summon up a great deal of trivia on witches and related creatures of the Dark.
  107.
  108. -Witch Vault-
  109. Orion has over a dozen witch-signs embedded deep within his mind, the product of a life spent refraining from the traditional practices of averting his eyes during casting. He can spot those witch-signs as they are formed and will instantly know the function of any spell created using them. In addition he can also make these signs with his hands flawlessly if he needs to but will summon no magic unless he devours soil. But if he has enough soil in him and chooses to make a witch-sign he WILL summon up magic and he WILL be instantly damned, becoming darkness' tool. Such is the dangerous path of the Witch-finder and all those others who have had the protection of ignorance stripped from them.
  110.
  111. -Discern Chill-
  112. Orion can detect traces of witch-chill in soil by simply touching it, his mind attuned to witchery heavily enough that such processes are immediately familiar to him. He can also detect the amount and the age of it at times.
  113.
  114. -Black Compass-
  115. Orion scatters soil that is heavily attuned to darkness or witchcraft and lets it act upon its natural magnetism for its kind. The slight deviation in the specks of dirt that result are minuscule and can only be detected by heavy usage of Discern Chill. But if this can be maintained it will lead Orion to the closest source of Dark.
  116.
  117. -Midnight Compass-
  118. An upgrade to the previous Black Compass that works identically to it save that it can ignore known sources, allowing Orion to use it despite nearby witches already known to him.
  119.
  120. -Witchbane-
  121. Orion has a great deal of practice in fighting witches specifically and knows how to best disrupt and bind their hands mid-combat. He can recognize and stop a witch-sign before it can be completed by quickly striking them apart and if he has a witch at a disadvantage in melee combat he can effectively ready an action to strike either their hands or the witch themselves in response to an attempted witch-sign.
  122.
  123. -Roll The Bones-
  124. Orion may roll two or more dice at any time and can compare the results, tracking the 1s to find the direction of Dis and Snake-Eyes itself. The dice must be rolled upon the earth.
  125.
  126.
  127. SPARK
  128. Orion now possesses another relic, a spark of flame embedded within his brow by Belle the Wax Saint. It contains much of her power! It is normally dormant but when called upon a small speck of fire will burn once more atop Orion’s brow. When active it counts as a constant source of fire for the purposes of Flame Rites, one with a maximum Wick of 8 that is recharged at the same time as you recharge your wick. It can also be consumed entirely to summon Belle.
  129.
  130. DUCAL FIRECRAFTING
  131. Orion's victory over the Iron Duke and the successful reclamation of his stolen shard has granted him holy insight into the Duke's own mislead Flame Internal and the processes in which the fire was deformed for the purposes of Earth. When faced up against such a perversion of the Flame, his own Wick can only burn hotter. Whenever Orion regains Wick through any means, he gains +1 additional Wick. this does not apply to his Spark.
  132.
  133. WITCHFINDER'S LAST LESSON
  134. Orion successfully wresting the shard from the Paper Bridesmaid, while not as violent as his other victories, still has both power and an insight to offer. The Paper Bridesmaid's sight is not the curse it seems to be. Instead you can use it to a righteous end if you so choose, harnessing the connection to the foul things of Earth in order to draw power from the knowledge. A Witch-finder does not avert their eyes from the dark. Whenever Orion rolls at least two 1's in a roll, he must immediately choose a Witch Lore from a list and learn it.
  135.
  136. DEAD KING'S CROWN
  137. Orion and his companions finding where the dead Magistrate Agatha had hidden her shard, in the hall of Epitaph without the mad machine even knowing what it had, has given him some insight into his more extreme techniques. Whenever a Flame Rite or Benediction has the option to spend additional Wick, you gain 1d3 free points of Wick that can only be spent to fuel the additional effect.
  138.
  139. ORION'S LAMP-POST
  140. Practically a holy relic in its own right, this broken central lamp-post has both the power typical to such devices AND the fragments of something far greater trapped within its lamp. This lamp-post is automatically considered a flaming weapon of the utmost degree that no darkness can dispel and can also be used as a source for magic with a Wick pool of 100. Whenever Orion is called on to make a roll while wielding the lamp, select the best roll out of the three dice and triple it, discarding the rest.
  141. But such direct usage is dangerous and permanently burns Orion every time he uses it, the burns increasing with both the duration and the amount of power he calls from it. The pain from these burns fades shortly but they cannot be healed and the larger they grow, the less time Orion has before he is inevitably burned to a crisp.
  142. Orion is currently burned from his hands up past his elbows.
  143.
  144. The Lamp can also be used passively to empower wicks and other Flame Rite implements. This does not burn Orion or even require the Lamp to be unwrapped but it does not recharge the wick either, merely grants it the ability to always produce powerful true flame.
