  1. (7:42:00 PM) conAri|online: ["Nelsaa," Tobias greets her. There's a very small smile at the corners of his mouth. "Come in, come in."]
  2. (7:43:15 PM) conAri|online: ["Can I get you anything to eat or drink?"]
  3. (7:45:22 PM) staEsc|Offline: [Your fins are perked up giddily. "Lemonade?" you ask hopefully. "I'm not hungry, I ate a little while before you messaged me."]
  4. (7:48:15 PM) conAri|online: [A wider smile. You've become fond of her, in your way. "I believe I have a little. Let's go sit in the parlor."]
  5. (7:49:07 PM) conAri|online: [And so, given a few minutes, drinks are poured, and Tobias settles in. He's a little distracted, as is not uncommon--checking his phone every few minutes.]
  6. (7:51:20 PM) staEsc|Offline: [Nelsaa is unbothered. She is, interestingly enough, willing to wait and allow him his brief moments to check his phone. Whatever he's doing is obviously important.]
  7. (7:54:39 PM) conAri|online: [He frowns, and sets it aside. "What have I told you, about my first session, and my first co-players?" The question is sudden, but sudden shifting of topics are not uncommon with him.]

  9. (8:02:06 PM) staEsc|Offline: [She puts down her glass of lemonade, eyes bright and attentive. She hasn't quite managed to get to the Quest Bed and heal up her gills, but she's in much better health these days. No limp, no winces. "You mentioned that it was mixed, and that was all."]
  10. (8:04:50 PM) conAri|online: [You nod, and turn to face her. "And I often neglect to mention that, to those I play with. It isn't relevant, and I don't need the attention for being...special."]

  13. (8:10:54 PM) staEsc|Offline: [Her fins flick. "I didn't meet many of the moderators, but... was she a blue-text one?"]

  16. (8:16:17 PM) staEsc|Offline: ["People get Knight because they don't want to fight," she says, "or because they don't know how to defend things." She wrinkles her nose. "Vengeful Timewolf is such a /tacky/ name."]
  17. (8:18:18 PM) conAri|online: ["She was never much for subtlety," Tobias agrees. "I was a pacifist."]
  18. (8:18:51 PM) conAri|online: ["And she, with all the certainty of a Seer, was certain my ideals would bring our session to doom and ruin."]
  19. (8:20:00 PM) staEsc|Offline: [Her fins go flat against her head, but she holds his gaze. "She made you change that, didn't she? You're not a pacifist anymore."]
  20. (8:23:39 PM) conAri|online: [He looks down into his cup. "She broke it from me, with hurled bodies, spat words, and throwing her bull-headed certainty against my will until it caved."]
  21. (8:24:22 PM) staEsc|Offline: [She hisses quietly, between her teeth.]
  22. (8:24:30 PM) conAri|online: ["In my first session, Achilles lay down and waited for my sword. No other denizen has, or will."]
  23. (8:28:23 PM) staEsc|Offline: ["Because she pushed until she broke you." It was a concept that she was having trouble comprehending. He didn't seem broken. "You don't seem broken," she points out. "How did you fix yourself?"]
  24. (8:31:50 PM) conAri|online: [ His voice was on the edge of a tremor, before. He's snapped back to smooth tones, now. "That was a long, long, time ago," he replies. "But in large part, it was with a little help from a strong ally."
  25. (8:34:46 PM) conAri|online: ["While I must conclude that the people good Timewolf had fallen in with were prone to cultish in-group bias, to say nothing of being prone to giving dangerously underinformed advice...there are other networks of players that aid each-other in times of need."]
  26. (8:38:06 PM) conAri|online: ["I could no longer believe in my old ideals, no matter how much I might have wanted to. I needed to find a new way of life, and one that explained--" He makes a sweeping gesture. "That explained the enormous disparity between what we are promised, and what we are given."]
  27. (8:38:51 PM) conAri|online: ["She knew, from her friends," the word is poisoned, "that the Door wouldn't work. She didn't tell us. She thought it would be a kindness, I'm sure."]
  28. (8:46:47 PM) conAri|online: ["...Forgive me. This doesn't answer your question."]
  29. (8:47:38 PM) staEsc|Offline: ["But it tells parts of the story."]
  30. (8:48:08 PM) conAri|online: ["I met a friend, and they helped me to become strong again, and to have faith in Skaia and Paradox Space." You smile at the memories of that long-ago session.]
  31. (8:48:34 PM) staEsc|Offline: [She's calm, these days, in his presence. Her eyes are starting to turn violet. "What were they like? What did they show you?"]
  32. (8:52:45 PM) conAri|online: [He smiles. "Oh, our little cohort, we were so /full/ of plans." Then he turns solemn again. "The Game is broken," Tobias intones. "That is no secret. We /know/, in our pushers, that Skaia is a force of creation, and knowledge, and benevolence. Why, if 'god' is so good, doesn't it act?"]
  33. (8:53:56 PM) staEsc|Offline: [Rhetorical question! You tilt your head, waiting for him to continue.]
  34. (8:58:04 PM) staEsc|Offline: [But....]
  35. (8:58:23 PM) staEsc|Offline left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).

  39. (8:59:34 PM) conAri|online: [You can wait. You think it's important, that you know what, if anything, Nelsaa thinks of this seeming paradox.]
  40. (9:00:19 PM) staEsc|Offline: ["Because there's something getting in the way?" She rubs her hands together. "Because we're not good enough?"]
  41. (9:02:53 PM) conAri|online: ["Not quite," But he nods approvingly. "Without a healthy, and whole, Skaia, the /players/ cannot create a new Universe. When the Game is broken, when there is a tumor in one's session, when players seek unfairly or unjustly in the destiny of others....it is our greatest, and gravest, responsibility to /act/."]
  42. (9:03:38 PM) conAri|online: ["Skaia's eyes see all, but we are its hands."]
  43. (9:05:12 PM) conAri|online: ["Sometimes, it is true, we are clumsy hands. Sometimes, the players chosen for a universe's birth work at cross-purposes. Not everyone understands, do they?"]

  45. (9:10:08 PM) conAri|online: [You grin--an honest, teeth-bared, grin. "So that was what the friends, and allies, and cohorts I started to make after my third session taught me."]
  46. (9:10:53 PM) conAri|online: ["We don't always agree on the best way to do things--but we understand each-other, better, than I think many other Replayers do. And we haven't lost sight of what's most important. And we protect our own."]
  47. (9:16:33 PM) conAri|online: [The grin becomes challenging. "Want to help us?" It's the same expression he gives Nelsaa over the game-board, but magnified.]

  50. (9:19:19 PM) staEsc|Offline: [And she smiles back - it's an easy one, free of guile. Excited. Enthusiastic.]

  52. (9:20:47 PM) conAri|online: [His eyes flash delight. "Let's find out." He retrieves a full-sized husktop and turns to show her, opening up a bare-bones interface.]
