- Homework: Read p. 39 and do parts 2, 3, and 4 on p. 38
- part 3
- 1 two (approximately)
- 2 afraid
- 3 stop
- 4 It was difficult for me.
- 5 stop swimming (I decided to give up.)
- 6 quickly
- one < a couple < a few < several < many
- part 4
- 1 first: go swimming despite the storm, he swallowed saltwater and sand and had to fight the water
- second: to return to the beach, he was hit by waves and couldn’t return
- third: to give up fighting and let go, he was carried back to the beach
- 2 He talks about the sea like it’s a person: “The sea is our mother, sister, and home, and as such I love her.”
- 3 If there are no fish, it’s probably because someone did something and changed the environment and the fish left or died. He asks forgiveness on behalf of humanity.

- ---
- a sea change, come calm or high water, doldrums, etc. are English words or expressions about how much the sea can change (and affect people like sailors and fishermen).
- ---
- As a class, design an underwater city. Where in the world will it be located, how many people will live there, and what facilities and features will it have? How will people get there? Why will they visit? etc.
- Here are some potential solutions to problems that the class had last time:
- Air: everyone must have an oxygen mask, tube to the surface for air exchange, plant trees and plants to produce oxygen
- Food: eat fish, eat the crops that you planted for oxygen, raise animals in the city
- Transportation: swimming, tubes connecting the places you need to go, little submarines like cars
- Garbage and Waste: ship non-recyclable garbage to landfills, separate out recyclable waste and recycle it, some of it can be composted and used as fertilizer for the plants
- Light and Heat: artificial lighting for the plants
- Energy: chemicals in the water, ocean surface solar panels, wave and tidal energy

- BREAK
- ---
- p. 38 part 6 - “get”
- get = become: I got sick. It got cold. They got married.
- get = arrive: When will you get home? How do I get to the bank? We got back last night.
- (After you get sick, you are sick. After they get married, they are married. After I get home, I am home.)
- get = obtain / receive: I got milk. She got an award. We got a big bill in the mail.
- (After she gets an award, she has an award. After I got milk, I had milk. After we got a bill, we had a bill.)
- ---
- part 6 - Find expressions with “get” in the story which can replace the bolded words in each sentence.

- 2 didn’t get better (in the story it got worse, but that’s a little bit different)
- 3 get to
- 4 getting closer to
- 5 get
- 6 gotten out of
- If I am in a bad situation: escaping it = getting out of it
- If I am on something and I escape, I get off (of) it.
- If I am near something and I escape, I get away from it. (For example if it is chasing me.)
- ---
- p. 40 part 1 - Tell your group which statements are true for you and share some examples.
- “shaggy dog story” = a long, rambling story that sounds like it should be a joke, but which doesn’t really have a punchline (if it’s funny, it’s funny because it’s so unimportant)
- ---
- metaphor = using one thing or idea to illustrate something about another thing (many idioms and expressions come from metaphors)
- “Life is a journey.” -> at a crossroads, turn your life around, walks of life, you’ve been down that road before, rat race, in a rut, go with the flow, etc.
